Check Point spells out hacking vulnerability of TV and movie subtitle files

It's Wednesday, May 24th, and if you manage to pick up Samsung's latest halo foam, the Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus, we hope you're enjoying it, but as we're sure you're aware, the pace of tech turnover is relentless. So, you better believe that Samsung is hard at work on its successor, the Galaxy S9.

According to South Korean websites, Abell samsung has already given the S9 or whatever it'll be called, the codename "star" and "star 2" for the larger plus model. The Bell reports that despite the appearance of prototypes and concept models, the star or S9 will not be a foldable phone. This early in the process, it's likely that no performance or specifications have actually been specified.

However, the Bell claims that the phone will have a dual lens camera and a sub screen thicker print reader. Two features that have also cropped up in leaks for the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 are expected to be included in the S9 as well. In other news, the current hot trend in photography, 360-degree photo gear, has companies scrambling to turn it out left and right. One company new to the game is GPS and avionics maker Garmin, which recently put their new Verbi 4K 360 camera through its paces. The Verbi features image stabilization, a fleet of sensors, data overlays for microphones, and a top-mounted screen for setting up and reviewing your pics and video.

One feature that stood out to the reviewer was the ability to control the Verbi using voice command, including starting and stopping recordings. This is a pretty handy feature indeed. For those interested in learning more about the Garmin Verbi 360, there is a link provided.

In a weird and unexpected turn of events, online security firm Checkpoint has revealed that hackers can take control of your PC, phone, or streaming box through subtitles. Yes, you read that right - subtitles! According to Checkpoint, hackers could insert malicious code into the text files that facilitate on-screen translations of your favorite foreign film.

Checkpoint highlights apps such as PopcornTime, Kodi, VLC, and Stream E O as being especially vulnerable to this type of attack. The company claims that they have not been aware of anyone using this idea yet, but they did manage to pull off a proof-of-concept exercise themselves.

Fortunately, Checkpoint has also posted links and instructions to solve the issues in those apps. However, at this point, some of the fixes do require advanced computer skills. Nevertheless, it's clear that app makers are scrambling to update their code to prevent this type of subtitle hack attack from happening in the future.

To ensure your apps are updated and secure, make sure you keep them up-to-date with the latest patches. And remember, subtitles might be convenient for translating foreign films, but they can also be a vulnerability waiting to happen! That's all for DT Daily today.
