The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus: A Comprehensive Review
The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are two of the most highly anticipated smartphones of 2018, and for good reason. Both devices boast impressive features and specs that make them stand out from the competition. In this article, we'll take a closer look at each device, exploring their key features, performance, camera capabilities, and more.
Performance and User Experience
The S9 and S9 Plus are both running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, with Samsung's user experience on top. While it's true that Samsung has made some efforts to differentiate its software from the standard Android interface, the overall experience is still quite similar to what we've seen from other manufacturers in the past. However, this shouldn't be a major concern for most users.
The S9 and S9 Plus also come with Big Bixby, an AI-powered assistant that's designed to learn your habits and preferences over time. While it's not as polished as some of its competitors, such as Google Assistant or Apple's Siri, Big Bixby is still a solid addition to the device.
Camera Capabilities
The camera is perhaps one of the most important features of any smartphone, and the S9 and S9 Plus deliver in this department. The dual-camera setup on the S9 Plus includes an F/1.5 aperture equipped wide-angle camera and a 2.4 aperture equipped telephoto camera. This allows for some impressive optical zoom capabilities, as well as the ability to switch between different apertures physically.
The camera app itself is also quite user-friendly, with options for manual mode and auto mode. In auto mode, you can still see the blades of the aperture moving on the camera, which adds a bit of flair to the overall experience. However, it's worth noting that this feature has been around for a while now, so it's not necessarily something new or groundbreaking.
Other Camera Features
In addition to the dual-camera setup, the S9 and S9 Plus also offer some impressive video capabilities. You can record 4K video at 60 frames per second, making these devices the second Android phone to support this feature after the iPhone. They also support super slow-mo at 720p at 960 frames per second or 1080p video at 240 frames per second.
Another feature that's worth mentioning is the AR Emoji, which allows you to take a picture of yourself and convert it into an emoji. This feature is still relatively new, but it's already been tested out in a few different scenarios, including at Mobile World Congress. While it's not as sophisticated as some of its competitors, such as Apple's Animoji, the AR Emoji is still a fun and useful addition to the device.
Storage and RAM
The S9 and S9 Plus come with two different storage options: 64GB or 256GB. The difference in size isn't too drastic, but it's worth noting that the S9 has more RAM than the S9 Plus, with 6GB of RAM compared to 4GB on the larger device.
Expansion is also available on both devices, with support for up to 400GB microSD card expansion. Samsung plans on making these cards available in several markets, including India, which is a welcome development for users who need more storage space.
Conclusion
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are two highly capable smartphones that offer a range of impressive features and specs. While they may not be perfect – Big Bixby, for example, still has some growing pains to work out – they're certainly worth considering for users looking for a high-end Android device.
We'll be putting the S9 and S9 Plus through our testing regime in the coming days, so stay tuned for our review. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys what's up this worth watching again and today Samsung has launched the Galaxy S 9 and the s 9 plus in India we're gonna be unboxing the s 9 plus and taking a look at some of its features and the differences between the s 9 plus and the s 9 the phones were launched at Mobile World Congress on the 24th of February a date before the official start of the Mobile World Congress and they did not create too much of attention but they rushed several changes on the devices and will tell you what all so let's quickly get started now Samsung has been smart enough to launch the s 9 in the s 9 plus in India quickly and they start at 50 7900 for the galaxy s 9 but the s 9 plus at 64 gigabyte starts at 65 thousand nine hundred of these and we've got the 64 gigabyte variant here they are also available both in 256 gigabyte variants India just like most of the world gets the Exynos 9 8 1 0 variant whereas only the u.s. and South Korea gets the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 variant both the s9 and s 9 plus have been launched in three colors in India which is the midnight black the lilac purple and the coral blue we do have the coral blue over here but I am really interested in checking out the lilac purple so I'll have a hands-on with that possibly in the near future so once we slide open the box cover you will see that this does have the Indian SIM card warning that means that you'll have to use the phone with an Indian SIM card for at least 5 minutes of talk time before you can take it overseas and pop in an international SIM card in it this is a safety mechanism that Samsung has put into Sam's and India made devices so that is definitely something you should be aware of if you're planning on buying this phone in India and taking it elsewhere the first thing inside the box is another box which does house up a few accessories so you do have your sim ejection tool and you also have the back case it's great that Samsung is including the back case in their smartphones now it is not something that you see with a flagship device from companies but it's good because it does have a glass back and a glass front so they did include covers with the s8 s8 plus also the note 8 so with the s9 and s9 plus you will also get these silicon sleeves like I mentioned you get a sim ejector tool and a Quick Start Guide which includes basic documentation next up is the phone itself you can see that it is in this coral blue color it looks fantastic I actually checked out this color at Mobile World Congress along with the several other colors that we saw at Mobile World Congress all of them look really nice they are fingerprint magnets because of the glossy back now if we go further in you will see that we do get a standard USB to USB type-c cable and you will also get a set of AKG T owned earphones now these have been improved considerably according to Samsung and we're gonna check them out you do get a braided cable really high-quality earphones with a decent amount of audio quality again like I said they have been improved and we'll have a review of them out shortly as well also inside the box is a USB to USB type-c adapter so in case you want to transfer information attach a SSD or a pendrive to your smartphone you can do that using this and then you also have the fast adaptive charger from Samsung which basically uses Qualcomm's quick charge to speeds Samsung has not improved the quick charging capability possibly to reduce stress on the CPU or the battery on the smartphone you also get additional ear tips for your earphones and that basically concludes everything inside the box it's time to take a look at the device itself so once I remove all the plastic packaging you'll see that over at the top you get the front-facing camera which is an 8 megapixel camera with an F 1.7 aperture you do get auto HDR and 4k video recording on the front camera you also get a few sensors including an iris sensor which is on the top in this thin little bezel or the forehead as we like to call it and just below that is the main display now this is their infinity display with an 18 point 5 is to 9 Specht ratio a 6.2 inch Super AMOLED display on the samsung galaxy s 9 + whereas a 5.8 inch Super AMOLED display on the samsung galaxy s 9 resolution for both the devices remains the same at 296 0 by 1440 pixels but the s9 gets a 570 pixels per inch due to the size of the screen whereas the s9 plus gets a 529 pixels per inch in no way is this less and it's quite impressive to say the least the bottom bit of the phone does not have a big chin in fact a very thin bezel and because the sides of the phone are tapered in into their edge display you almost feel like there is no side bezel on both of these devices and the phones look extremely premium extremely modern despite them being almost identical to the s8 and si plus the bottom bit gets a USB type-c connector you also get a speakerphone microphone and a 3.5 mm headphone jack Samsung sticking to its guns and keeping the headphone jack or is right in the typical Samson fashion is the power button and on the top is the same tray along with a noise cancellation microphone over at the left are the volume buttons along with a dedicated Bigsby button that Samson also refuses to get rid of at the back you will see your heart rate sensor your LED flash a new camera layout with the dual cameras vertically aligned this time around and just below that a more convenient location for the fingerprint sensor you also have the Samsung logo and a whole lot of gloss going on at the background there are markings on the bottom but they are subtle so you don't see them at all once you complete the setup you'll be able to set up things like your new intelligent scan which basically uses face unlock and iris unlock so if you are using the phone in the day it will use face unlock to quickly unlock your device but if you go into a place where it's dim and face unlock doesn't work it'll use your irises to unlock the device which also works at night because it does do an infrared scan of your eyeballs and it will work in the night as well so the device is using best of both worlds and it's quite responsive in bright light and of course if you have low light environments it'll be slightly slower but it still works well straight out of the box the phone is running Android 8 and you also get Samsung's user experience 9 which means that you get the latest in terms of software but it again it's quite identical to what we've seen from Samsung in the past so you do have a few set of applications including Samsung Apps Microsoft apps pre-loaded you still can't get rid of these but you can disable them you also have Bigsby sitting on the left of the main screen again something that you need to set up start using according to your requirements and once you do that it becomes quite usable now it works quite well but still a lot of things Big C needs to do to catch up in countries like India but there are several more Bigsby features that have been enabled on the new Galaxy S 9 and s 9 plus and we'll be detailing them in the near future the camera remains the most important feature of the S 9 and 9 plus and with the dual cameras on the S 9 plus you also get the ability to switch apertures physically so you get an F 1.5 or an 2.4 aperture you can get into the pro mode and adjust this manually or the phone will do it on the fly in the auto mode you can physically see the blades of the aperture moving on the camera and it looks mighty impressive as far as the camera setup is concerned you do get dual 12 megapixel cameras the wide-angle camera is an F 1.5 aperture equipped camera whereas the telephoto camera which is the second camera is a 2.4 aperture equipped camera the wide camera which is the main camera and also the camera on the s9 allows for aperture adjustment finally the samsung galaxy s 9 and s 9 plus get 4k video at 60 frames per second making this the second device to enable this after the iPhone and at present the only Android phone to do that both the s9 and ice 9 plus also do super slow-mo at 720p at 960 frames per second or you can get 1080p video at 240 frames per second they made a big deal about this but we have seen this in the past on Sony devices so there's nothing exceptional going on over here but they have included this in the camera another feature that seems to be a spin-off of the iPhones an emoji is the AR emoji again we tested this out at Mobile World Congress it's quite easy you take a picture of yourself and it converts it into an emoji then you can play around with the way the emoji looks play around with the color the skin tone etc you can then animate it on the fly using your own facial expressions or save these as an if stickers and then you can share these gifs over any platform that does support it so basically you can create your own emojis and send them over whatsapp etc you can do this on the iPhone as well it is a dual step process you need to create the emoji then save it separately in this scenario they are already pre-made and you can save them and then share them with anyone you like the Samsung Galaxy S 9 and s 9 plus come in either a 64 gigabyte or a 256 gigabyte option the s9 gets foking about of ramp whereas the s9 plus gets six gigabyte of RAM both of them will support 400 gigabyte microSD card expansion and Samsung is planning on making these cards available in several markets for the Exynos variant that has been launched in India the nine-eight 1-0 Exynos chip set you get a quad-core 2.9 gigahertz setup along with the 1.9 gigahertz quad-core setup all in all an octa-core setup along with the mali g72 MP 18 GPU this in itself is quite impressive it's a very impressive and stable chip from Samsung and we've seen reports that it will perform really well of course we'll be doing all sorts of tests with the samsung galaxy s 9 and s 9 plus if you haven't already go check out our hands-on at launch at Mobile World Congress I'll leave a link to that in the description below as well stay tuned for our review which should be out in a couple of days we've been playing around with this phone for quite a while now and we should be out with the review in a few days that's it for this video if you have any questions or queries drop them in the comment section below if you like this video don't forget to smash that like button hit that subscribe button if you're not already a part of TMI again this
