How Similar are the Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 in Terms of Performance?
As I sat in my Toyota Supra, I couldn't help but notice the new BMW Z4 parked next to me. Both cars share many similarities, with one being a hardtop model and the other featuring a soft top roof. However, the most significant difference between them lies in their performance capabilities. The question everyone's been asking is: how much different are they in terms of performance? To answer this, I decided to put both cars through various tests and see which one comes out on top.
The BMW Z4 uses the same 3-liter straight-six turbo engine as the Toyota Supra, with a power output of 40 horsepower. Both cars also feature an 8-speed automatic torque converter gearbox and weird launch control. With that in mind, it's time to put both cars through their paces and see which one comes out on top.

Additionally, if you're not receiving notifications, make sure that your YouTube settings are enabled for mobile devices. Now, let's get started with the tests.
The first test was a standing quarter mile dash. I lined up both cars side by side and gave it my best shot. The Toyota Supra took off like a rocket, but unfortunately, I dropped it on the starting line and had to pull over. Despite this setback, the car still managed to complete the quarter mile in 12 seconds, which is impressive considering the circumstances. On the other hand, the BMW Z4 took a bit longer to get started, but once it did, it quickly caught up with me. Unfortunately for the Z4, it couldn't quite keep up with my Supra's pace and finished with a time of 12.5 seconds.
I decided to run the test again to ensure consistency and accuracy. This time, I made sure to start both cars from the same line, and the results were almost identical. The Toyota Supra took off like a shot and completed the quarter mile in 12 seconds, while the BMW Z4 finished with a time of 12.5 seconds. It's clear that my Supra has an edge when it comes to acceleration.
However, I want to note that the difference between the two cars is not as significant as one might expect. The BMW Z4 may have lost the quarter mile dash, but it still manages to hold its own in terms of overall performance. In fact, during our test, I noticed that the Z4 was able to manage wheel spin quite effectively when shifting into second gear. This gives me confidence that the car has some impressive handling capabilities.
Another aspect of performance that's worth mentioning is the power output of each car. While both cars share the same engine, there's a difference in terms of horsepower. The BMW Z4 seems to have an extra 10-15 horsepower at its disposal compared to my Toyota Supra. This might not seem like a lot, but it can make all the difference in certain situations.
We also ran a test from 50 miles per hour, where both cars were in their normal setting and comfort mode for their respective BMWs and automatic transmissions. I counted down from three to one, kickstarting both cars as they roared to life. The Toyota Supra took off like a shot, while the BMW Z4 quickly followed suit. However, once we hit 70 miles per hour, things got interesting.
We were expecting that there would be some delay in response, but surprisingly, the BMW Z4 managed to keep pace with my Supra's pace. In fact, the car managed to maintain a consistent speed despite any drag caused by fake vents on its surface. While it may not have been able to outpace me initially, the BMW Z4 held its own when it mattered most.
In conclusion, while both cars share many similarities, there are some key differences in terms of performance capabilities. The Toyota Supra seems to have an edge when it comes to acceleration and handling, but the BMW Z4 makes up for it with its superior power output at higher speeds. In the end, it's clear that both cars are excellent performers, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
One last thing before we wrap this article up - our friends over at Car Throttle have recently released a video where they dyno'd my Toyota Supra at 376 horsepower, showing off some impressive performance capabilities.
