The New Mercedes E-Class Coupe A: 10 Things You Need to Know

This is the new Mercedes e-class coupe, and it's curvier and sexier than the brilliant saloon on which it's based. Plus, it's about to go on sale in April 2017, with a price for around $38,000. The Carlisle 10 things you need to know about this car are as follows: the new e-class coupe 8 is noticeably larger than the outgoing model, actually 123 millimeters longer than the old version. However, it isn't wasted space - 130 millimeters of that extra length is between the wheelbase, which means more legroom and shoulder room for rear passengers.

The e-class coupe A has always prided itself on offering a pair of usable rear seats. And these seats are even better on this new model, with a whole 74 millimeters of extra legroom and 34 millimeters more shoulder room than the old one. What do those numbers mean? They mean more space for rear passengers - which is great news for anyone who needs to transport friends or family members. The European cousins will get an entry-level e class coupe A in a Vanguard trim, while DS won't offer that in the UK because it knows that here, buyers tend to prefer higher specification cars.

As a result, the only trim available from launch will be an AMG line, featuring large alloy wheels and a sporty body kit. From launch, there'll be four engines available - three petrol, which will be 2 litres and one 3 litre V6, as well as one half-litre diesel. It's the same engine that's in the e-class saloon, and it can return 71 miles per gallon. But don't worry, those after performance will have to wait for a while - because eventually, there'll be an e43 and a full-fat e63 AMG version with over 600 horsepower available as standard.

The e-class coupe A suspension is 50 millimeters lower than the saloons for better agility and less body roll. However, you can upgrade to dynamic body control, which lets drivers choose between comfort or increasingly firm Sport and Sport Plus modes. And at the top of the class, there's an optional air body control air suspension that promises even more comfort - along with the option of sport and eco modes.

But it's not all about driving - because this car also comes with some innovative features to make your life easier. You don't need to rummage about in your bag to find your phone's USB cable anymore, because the e-class coupe A is now available with wireless phone charging. Simply pop your compact smartphone into the tray, and it will charge without wires while also using the car's aerial to enhance your phone signal.

Mercedes will offer a competitor to voxels OnStar service in the e-class coupe A, in the form of Mercedes me connect concierge. It's available as an optional extra, and works across 19 countries. Customers can simply call up and the concierge can book a restaurant table, give information about events or tourist destinations, and send directions straight to the car.

And if you want to stay connected on the go, there's also an optional magic vision control system that uses windscreen wipers to spray screen wash as they wipe it. This means you don't get that awful split-second of blindness before the wipers clear the spray - a small feature that will make a big difference on the road.

The e-class coupe A's cabin is pretty luxurious, and Mercedes hasn't needed to change it much for this model. Look closer though, and you might notice some fancy new air vents on the dashboard that have been styled to resemble a turbine engine - these do lift the ambient somewhat as well as its swoopy body. And there are also slimmer LED tail lamps in a feature called "welcome lights", where the indicator sweeps outwards when you lock the car, and inwards once you lock it again.
