The Mondeo's 168 Brake Horsepower: A Surprising Find
As we began our project to restore this Ford Mondeo, none of us were expecting it to have such significant horsepower. The car was originally spec'd with a modest 156 horsepower, but after multiple dyno runs, we discovered that its actual output had been quietly slipping away over the years. It seemed like a nice number, and at first, we didn't think much of the loss - 30 horsepower in 20 years wasn't too alarming. But as we dug deeper, we realized that this was no ordinary power drop-off.
We decided to run some tests on the car's engine, using our trusty dyno equipment and a Carley adapter to get an accurate reading. We plugged in the app and started the car up, getting ready to put it through its paces. The Mondeo was fitted with a Super Sprint exhaust system and had been tuned by us over the years. It was capable of impressive acceleration, having reached speeds of 205 miles per hour on the GPS and an astonishing 206 miles per hour on the clock.
Our dyno runs revealed that the car's actual horsepower output was significantly lower than its factory figure - a mere 659 horsepower compared to the expected 750. We were taken aback by this discovery, but we knew that there could be several reasons for this discrepancy. The engine might be dirty, with a gummed-up air filter or restricted exhaust system. Perhaps there had been issues with the fuel pump or injectors, leading to decreased performance. Or maybe it was simply a case of carbon buildup and general wear and tear on parts like piston rings or cam lobes.
Despite our initial surprise at the power loss, we were reassured by our findings that the Mondeo's engine wasn't in catastrophic condition. A decent service would be all it needed to get back up to speed - or rather, horsepower. We weren't too concerned about the power drop-off, knowing that the car was still capable of impressive acceleration and would likely handle well.
The M5: A New Project Car
While our attention was focused on restoring the Mondeo, a new project car had caught my eye - an BMW F90 M5. This car had been shipped to us from Imran, who had kindly offered it up for restoration. The M5 was not exactly stock, having undergone some tuning and modifications in preparation for track days.
As we prepared the M5 for its health check, we plugged in our Carley adapter and fired up the app to see how the car was performing. With a full exhaust system by Super Sprint and custom intake components, this M5 was a force to be reckoned with. Our previous experience with it had shown that it could reach speeds of over 200 miles per hour on the track - an astonishing feat for such a production-based car.
The Carley app allowed us to give the M5 a thorough health check, ensuring that everything was functioning correctly and efficiently. We customized various settings within the app, including its head-up display and infotainment system. With the M5's engine now on the dyno, we were eager to see how it would perform - a full dyno session lay ahead, with our sights set on pushing this car to new heights.
The Dyno Results: A Surprising Story
Our anticipation for the dyno results was high, but nothing could have prepared us for the news that awaited us. The M5 had been sent in for a test, and its actual horsepower output was... astonishingly low. Compared to its factory figure, it was running at an embarrassing 31 horsepower short.
While this result might seem alarming at first glance, we knew that there were several factors at play here. Perhaps the engine had simply been warmed up from previous use, or maybe our dyno equipment needed a bit of tweaking. Whatever the reason, one thing was clear - this M5 was not running at its best and would need some fine-tuning to reach its true potential.
Despite this surprise result, we remained optimistic about the car's prospects for performance. We'd seen it take on some impressive times in track days, reaching speeds of over 200 miles per hour with ease. This dyno session was just a test run - we knew that with the right adjustments and tuning, this M5 could easily become one of the fastest F90 M5s out there.
In the end, while our expectations had been slightly deflated by the dyno results, we remained committed to restoring this car back up to its former glory. With a little bit of fine-tuning and TLC, the BMW M5 was set to roar back to life - ready for whatever adventures lay ahead.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: entoday we're back in the Mondeo st 200 and I just want to say thank you so much for the support that you guys have given this car since it's been on the channel so we really could see our patch that you guys are about a car that's as mundane as this and don't worry the next episode with the Mondeo it will be getting restored so stay tuned you join us at dino development and as you can tell by the name we've got ourselves and Dino as I've mentioned on previous videos this is called the St 200 because it's supposed to create 200 horsepower Ford said from the factory it was 202 brake horsepower to be exact but that was 20 years ago so I'm curious how much power has this car lost in that time now I've never been wanting from power from this car I used as a daily and as performance is perfectly good but I reckon is missing a few ponies so let's get on the dyno and let's get number so how much horsepower is this thing gonna create I've got a number in my head of 168 brake horsepower don't know why I just seems like a nice number and 30 horsepower loss over 20 years seems okay but I want you guys to have a number in your head pick a number that you think this car is gonna create and then once we find out comment down below to tell me if you were right let's go so 156 horsepower a 200 years of course not just on the first run so what wait it's a naturally aspirated engine a warm-up event and that number will increase well that's a bad batch our hundred sixty P horsepower I think I might be by God I'm not saying increase again I'm wishing they arrived 168 so if we can grab both 117 I will be absolutely buffing Bob probably got another two runs laughs I see will happen 116 point five six on the nose so 31 32 horsepower 31.5 partially lost in 20 years of definitely dig back through decks we'll go one more place go for that 170 77.7 so the Mondeo creates a hundred and sixty nine horsepower which means over its twenty years has lost 31 horsepower I don't think that's not bad although we need to change the badge on the back to an ST 169 how can an engine lose that amount of power well it could just be a dirty air filter there could be a restriction in the exhaust you could have a gummed up fuel pump or fuel injectors you could have dodgy spark plugs it could just be carbon buildup in the engine there could be general wear and tear to parts like piston rings or cam lobes or it could simply be dirty oil so although we're fully restoring this car I think that power loss isn't too catastrophic and we won't need to strip it down or anything so a decent service it should be all good so we couldn't have a dining for the day and not bring something with some proper power Imran this is your m5 and it's not exactly stock is it no not anymore so this is BMW f90 m5 the car came out in 2018 so since then obviously we've tuned it a little bit so the car currently has a full exhaust system by Super Sprint even chewie intakes and it's running our ECU tun and gearbox tune okay and you have recorded this over 200 miles an hour yeah so we go to v-max events quite a lot and that's a standing 1.1 mile now 1.2 we measured 205 miles an hour on the GPS so it was about 206 miles an hour on the clock so it's pretty fast okay and our Mondeo create hundred and sixty nine fort you expecting from this roughly so on my doughnut has made 750 750 and what stock for this so stock BMW quote around 560 but this did make a little bit more than stock one Madonna dick okay yeah I see before we put the m5 on the dyno we've plugged in the Carley adapter and we've got the Carley app up so as we discussed in our last video you can use it to diagnose a car and give it essentially a health check to make sure everything's healthy for even just a drive or summing performance orientated like pitting on a dyno bayview have a BMW there are other things you can do within the app you can customize certain things so you can customize your head up display so I'm the infotainment the security of the car to make sure it's locked your seat memories a whole host of things in this specific BMW you can convert an analog speedometer to a digital one so basically anything electrical in the car you can muck about with and customize via this app but we've given it the health check everything's all good let's get it on the rolling road so the Millea was 31 horsepower down on its factory figure and ran for were your results so we're used to this car making 750 horsepower and I don't know today it's only made 659 which goes to show you the differences between different dinos and setups that figure has an upset me too much because we've been sent a pod and done a template for quarter-mile I've been to v-max and it's like one of the fastest f90 m5s there so the donor figure is what it is but it's not upsetting because I know how fast the car is well it's been an eye-opening day for me showing what time can do to an engine and Imran thanks for bringing the m5 from them after seeing a man BMW on the dyno it has got my juices flowing for something a bit more powerful so if you guys were to pick a more powerful project car for the drive from YouTube channel what would it be tell us in the comments below anyway time to get this thing restored you youtoday we're back in the Mondeo st 200 and I just
