2 Ways to Embellish a Sweater! - HGTV Handmade

Hey Guys Welcome at the HGTV Handmade Today I Have a Simple Sweater DIY for Those of You Who Love to Accessorize

I'm going to show you how to transform a basic sweater into a statement piece. You will need a sweater, a needle, thread, scissors, and whatever you want to embellish your sweater with. I'm using studs for one sweater and a necklace for the other, but you could use rhinestones, beads, or sequins.

I wanted to embellish the shoulders on my first sweater, and I used studs to do this. These are actually beads, so I was able to sew them in place rather than glue them on. First, I used stickers to plan out my design and I'd suggest actually trying the sweater on while you do this because it's hard to get a sense for what the design will look like when the sweater is completely flat.

Start your needle then fold the thread in half not the ends at least two to three times starting from the inside of the sweater. Poke the needle through the fabric and up next to your first sticker pull the thread through until the knot that you tied earlier hits the inside of the sweater. Add a stud to your needle, then slide it into place. Now, poke the needle back through the fabric right next to the stud.

Now, move to the next sticker again, poke the needle through the fabric and up next to the sticker add a stud, then poke the needle back through the fabric on the other side of your stud when you reach the end of a row take the two ends of thread and tie them into a knot on the inside of the sweater trim any excess thread. Go one row at a time until all of your studs are in place and that's all there is to it.

Sewing on individual items like studs or rhinestones can be a little bit tedious, so if that's not your style here is an easier option for the second sweater I chose to embellish the neckline. This is a great way to repurpose old jewelry that you might not wear anymore.

First, choose a necklace I was torn between this one and this one but I ended up going with the all-gold option because I love the combination of blue and gold. Figure out where you want to place the necklace use wire cutters to remove the chain on either end. Now, it's time to sew the necklace into place starting from the inside poke the needle through the sweater and updo the necklace.

Pull the thread through until the knot hits the inside of the sweater poke the needle back through the necklace and into the fabric repeat this process along the edges of the necklace. You don't have to sew through every single hole, the necklace you choose will probably look different than mine, so you may have to sew through jump rings or beads and set of holes in the necklace.

When you reach the end of your thread cut it from the needle and secure the ends with a few knots on the inside of the sweater. It only took me about half an hour to make this second sweater and that's all there is to it. I love how easy it is to dress up a sweater with a few simple steps.
