The BMW M3 Competition Quadrifolia: A Car Fiber Seats and Subtle Design Details Make All the Difference

As I sat down behind the wheel of the BMW M3 Competition, I couldn't help but notice the subtle design details that set this car apart from its competitors. The first thing I noticed was the lack of carbon fiber seats, which is a major disappointment considering how much I love the aesthetic of carbon fiber trim on cars like the Porsche 911. However, it's worth noting that the normal seats are actually quite comfortable and reasonably well-appointed, with plenty of headroom and decent legroom for most drivers.

But what really caught my attention were the small design touches that made a big difference in my driving experience. The subtle aluminum trim on the wheel, for example, was a nice touch that added a bit of elegance to the overall design. And then there's the carbon fiber interior trim piece that adds a touch of sophistication to the dashboard. These small details may seem insignificant at first glance, but they really add up when you're driving a car as focused on performance and handling as the M3.

Of course, one of the biggest draws of the M3 is its incredible performance capabilities. And in terms of that, this car delivers in spades. The exhaust note changes dramatically in sport mode, becoming much louder and more aggressive. It's a small detail, but it really adds to the overall driving experience. But despite its impressive performance credentials, there are some areas where the M3 falls short. For example, the infotainment system is slow and laggy, making it difficult to use while on the move.

One of the most frustrating things about the M3's infotainment system is how difficult it is to get Apple CarPlay to work properly. I tried multiple times, but my phone kept getting disconnected or failing to connect in the first place. It was really annoying, especially since I've had no issues with this system on other cars. But despite its flaws, the M3's interior design is actually quite impressive, with plenty of physical buttons and a well-appointed dashboard.

Another feature that's worth noting is the wireless charging pad, which somehow manages to detect when an object is nearby and will pop up to charge your phone. It's a nice touch, but it's also a bit finicky - I'm not sure if I was just being unlucky, but it seemed like it only worked about half of the time. And then there's the issue with getting in and out of the car - due to its stiff chassis, the B-pillar is massive and difficult to navigate around, especially for taller drivers.

Despite these flaws, however, I couldn't help but love driving this car. There's just something special about behind-the-wheel experience that can't be replicated by any other car. And in terms of raw performance and handling, the M3 is certainly one of the best in its class. In fact, I found it to be far more enjoyable to drive than some of my other favorite sports cars - including the Porsche 911. Of course, as with all things BMW, there's a certain level of reliability and durability that comes with owning this car, which may be worth considering for buyers who want a hassle-free driving experience.

As we come to the end of our time with the M3 Competition Quadrifolia, it's clear that this is a car that will be missed by many. With its unique combination of performance, handling, and style, it's an option that's hard to ignore - especially for buyers who are looking for something that stands out from the crowd. And while some of its design elements may feel dated or unremarkable compared to newer models, the M3 still has a certain charm and character that sets it apart from its competitors.

The good news is that even in lower trims, the Quadrifolia's personality shines through - making it an excellent choice for buyers who want a sports sedan without breaking the bank. With so much of the M3's performance and handling expertise packed into these lower-end models, it's no wonder they're flying off the shelves. And as we await the next generation of BMWs, there's one thing that's certain: the Quadrifolia will be remembered fondly by many - if not for its flaws, then certainly for its unique blend of style and substance.

In the end, it all comes down to what you value in a car. Do you want raw performance and handling, or do you prioritize interior design and features? The M3 Competition Quadrifolia is clearly focused on the former - but that doesn't mean it's not worth considering for buyers who want something special. With its unique blend of style, substance, and driving experience, this car is a true gem in the BMW lineup.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey hey it's me yeah it happened again oh no yeah trust me the irony is not lost to me it started what 15 minutes ago I'm not going to make it damn it yeah Paulo David Roco they're all going to be laughing at me man it's embarrassing who something tells me that's not going to be a huge issue you're watching throttle house I'm Thomas and I'm James and this is the Julia quadrifolio and yes we were being cheeky because despite the low attendance at the Alpha Romeo support meeting ours is actually working perfectly the the Julia not Thomas's spider that that actually break down all right situation update we're getting a toe because I think I went over a bump and something happened to the fuel pump but can you blame us for using humor as a defense mechanism in front of something so intimidatingly beautiful the Julia has been refreshed for 2024 which means that its top trim the quadrifolio once again has a Fighting Chance of reestablishing its place amongst the performance sedans a selection that has seen increase brutality American absurdity Hybrid F1 Tech apparently made out of anvils and in other places just some tweaks for some the Julia quadrifolio has actually changed the least and considering it's now the oldest do the changes qualify it for its $80,000 starting price let's find out if you're new to throttle house we do car reviews track tests and quite a lot of messing around so subscribe and enjoy the show beautiful isn't it look at it red glistening in the sun turbocharged Fury four cylind ERS yeah this isn't the quadrifolio we'll get to the quadrifolio in just a second but I wanted to bring out the ti because the interesting thing about the Julia is it's a range of sedans that's built top down the quadrifolio was what it was supposed to be so if you get one of the lower trims like this you're smart because it benefits from all the engineering goodness and genius that the quadrifolio has for way less money I have a carbon fiber drive shaft I don't have a carbon fiber roof and Hood but I have an aluminum roof and Hood I have the same 8-speed transmission the same paddle shifters the same interior the same seats it looks the same every time I've ever gotten a quadrifolio my favorite thing about it is not that legendary Ferrari chopped off two cylinder engine that everyone goes on about it's the way it it moves it dances it's agile so theoretically even a normal Julia should achieve those things and guess what it does this thing drives beautifully chef's kiss absolutely dances the short steering ratio is there it's lighter than the codio yeah just that is just what this car is all about Alpha's claim best-in-class horsepower it's not slow 280 horsepower this hits 60 in just over 5 seconds but the fact that it drives as beautifully as the quadr fodio is way more important that makes it best-in-class dancer as far as I'm concerned and yeah it's missing some things like this blank button here that's where you would normally have the dynamic suspension button which comes standard on the quadrifolio so the suspension in this is not massively sophisticated but the car is like enough it's not punishing at all there's no LSD and yeah I mean you really are there is something to be said for that V6 because this while potent and Punchy and confident CU this is the all-wheel drive which can send some power to the front after 0.15 seconds apparently which just makes it a really good winter vehicle it's not a massively exciting engine the moment you you start to access that power there it is drone because you've hit red line and it just sort of drones down here yes I'm it little bit of a let down yeah also you can't turn off traction control which I'm hoping Thomas forgets cuz I think that was the reason he didn't buy this a few years ago when he was thinking about it uh so it's not it's not hooligan it's not hooligan in that sense it's it's safe it's safe it's safe it's confident this has 50,000 MI on it it's from 2018 and you can buy one of these for $20,000 this right now is for sale for 28,000 Canadian that's the price of a Corolla and if you do what the previous owner of this one has done and put a carbon fiber lip spoiler on the back you basically have what anyone else would think is a quadrifolio and from the driver's seat as long as you don't step on it you've got one two James is an idiot why would you buy the non- quadrifolio version of a car that's meant to be the quadrifolio that's like training at an Olympic sprinter to do the 100 meters and then forcing them to do the race in Crocs filled with peanut butter every aspect of the quadrifolio is better the brakes are better the engine is better the suspension is better the aerodynamics are better the looks are better no tell no one is disagreeing with that but the point is this is like $775,000 more than that what you doing you doing don't do that don't do that so childish all right let me refresh your memory on some numbers twin turbo V6 55 horsepower a 190 mph top speed that it's over 300 km an hour this car is a monster even by today's standards and you just remember why when it came out everyone was blown away because it looks like that and it drives like this it's just such a win this car is such a win oh when I drove this a couple years ago I wasn't as Blown Away by it as I thought I was going to be but the more time I've had to digest what it is and what it isn't The more I've realized that I absolutely love the Julia quadrifolio the engine is extremely turbocharged and it isn't that exciting honestly the engine actually isn't the best part about this car even though it does sound pretty good you put the window down and you get some pretty serious cracks on the upshift that's good but with the windows up it isn't loud enough but it reminds me of the new Nuno engine in the Maserati and that's a good thing I love using these paddles the ZF transmission yes it's kind of the same one that's in james' car that he brought but it's very quick and very very fun to use ah these are just so nice aren't they every time you click one of these paddles you reach around and as we're always right in the same spot cuz they're mounted on the column it's just like you're you're testing the edge on a freshly sharpened battle axe it's just good it it's just really good but easily the best part about this car is the way that it goes around corners it reminds you of why you like driving Sports sedans in the first place out of all the sports sedans right now including the new M3 this is the only one that really feels like it delicately dances through the corners like a Ferrari and it's the only sport sedan I've driven in a long time time where I swear you can feel the really good weight distribution without reaching the limit you just load it up and you feel that nose just want to tuck in it's good it's really good it is it is real quick actually it's pretty quick and thank God this one doesn't have the carbon ceramic brakes so the brakes actually work in a normal intuitive way for everyday driving this is all you need you do not need the carbon Ceramics honestly unless you're really doing track work with this car you just don't need them just such a fun car driven in Anger it really is I'd put a louder exhaust on this cuz I want it to sound like this in the car oh hold on oh it even kicks you like an Aventador that's fun before we pulled over to compare the styling of the two juliia James had a go in the quadrifolio and I hopped in the old TI and I have to admit I rather liked it all right listen it's pretty good it's pretty good for $755,000 Less does it yes it definitely do spicy it's it's got a few extra chilies very spicy yes yeah on on the hot mark on the hot graph yeah yeah yeah six ches versus four um am I going crazy or is this particular quadrifolio a little bit spicier than quadr as we've driven in the past maybe we're just happier we just could be happier maybe we're just seeing colors clearer yeah but yeah it does feel like it makes it makes more noises I swear it's but it's still that turbocharged power band that's it is extremely I I feel like I'd like to drive this with a 4 L turbocharged car so it's a little bit more displacement a little bit less boost so you don't have to go every gear this does the same thing this by the time you're into the power it's like you got to change mate yeah one of us has got changed it's not going to be me yeah exactly so yeah but they both they share the same feel they look the same they are the same car they're the same car they almost have the same brakes cuz this doesn't have The Crazy Ones right but this can get you into trouble and this might cost more in maintenance maybe you know I just remembered something what you can't turn the traction control off in that car can you that's I if you're weak no you you you literally can't turn the it doesn't have race mode it doesn't have that stuff well why can't you do that that's why I didn't buy one of these as a daily a few years back that was the reason I remember remember now yeah that is such a bummer what were they thinking I remember reading something like something like the later cars or whatever it was you there's a tune you could do maybe to I don't know but like God also reliability that's a thing I think it's overblown am I right owners okay I did a little bit of research I I I have some anecdotal evidence from friends who have messaged me on Instagram and said that they got sick of this traded it in for a 3 30i or a m34 I or whatever because it never ever worked but I watched a video by our friends at Red driven in Australia yeah and they' specialize in used cars I guess and they said that a lot of the maintenance issues and the reliability issues are because of low voltage in the battery so you just put a new battery in it and apparently it's a pretty reliable car take that with a great assault I have no idea if that's true or not but I it I'd like that to be true we got some facelift stuff so yes so not only we got the quadrio difference every single Julia benefits from these new lights which I think look pretty sick yeah I we first saw them on the Tali I don't like the three I don't like the three thing the three what's a good number for you it reminds me of of of the eyes from the the the the mummy in that Tom Cruz mummy movie that watch I heard it was just a Tom Cruz movie it's exactly what it was and that's what the same amount it's got the same amount of cylinders yeah that was probably not intentional I hope they do that on the new batti V16 thing headlights just glue them on I think it was a nice update I mean obviously this has got quadrifolio stuff going on as well like every time I see a Julia as similar as these look I look for this and I turn whoever's next to me I go that's the uh that's the C folio and my wife says don't care bet you didn't notice I didn't ask James um this is still a great looking car though like look at it it's beautiful the the interior's come a long way I don't think we need to look at that one apart from that it's got what looks like a carbon fiber roof except it's it's a double sunroof double sunroof that occasionally will break apparently doesn't like to open yeah doesn't like to open and and it had a aftermarket spoiler on the back that makes it look exactly like a qu just missing two exhaust yeah just missing two exhausts okay um I think this is a great option if you could turn the traction control off I probably would have one already well here's what's interesting and here's why the the facelift is important if you if you choose to care okay cuz we looked CU it's not really fair to compare a brand new codio to a old TI in terms of price true however as people pointed out on our Instagram you can get a Juda quadrio pretty cheap and it's even cheaper than we thought we look they about 60 Canadian the few that we found with like 30,000 km on it and basically new I could trade in my M2 and a little bit of money and get a Julia quadrifolio and that's weirdly tempting actually but you'd be missing out on some things what I be missing let's have a look okay like this rear view camera oh yeah that is just unacceptable isn't it terrible it's that and this whole interior that's stopping me from instantly saying I would take this over any other sports sedan on the market I like the exposed carbon weave well that's new this year and it looks clean yeah no the design is pretty but it isn't any different to the interior of that other one except for when this is only new this year this exposed carbon fiber it was shiny before right and a digital gauge cluster is new this year it's a very nice digital it's a very nice one that in race mode yes give me race and this one hasn't been optioned with the very very cool car fiber seats oh yeah right yeah this has just got the normal seats and these seats are exactly the same as those seats but I like I like the the CRA folio differences I like the subtle alatar on the wheel I like the carbon fiber here it changes the exhaust so much in race mode it's cool seats are reasonably comfortable the seat the interior and the seats are very very nice it's all tons of head room it's a really well-designed interior except for the fact that it's weirdly difficult to get out of the car because I don't know this must have something to do with why the chassis is so stiff but this B pillar is massive and it's like right there right like check your blind spot yeah you can't there's a bar there also when you sit low the wing mirror takes up a lot of your vision as well does yeah yeah but I I remembered this having a terrible back seat and it doesn't actually it's reasonably comfortable I fit fine I'm 510 uh we haven't got Harrison here today because congrats to Harrison he's the proud father of twins but I managed to find a Harrison extender for myself and there isn't enough head room for a 6'6 man you're talking about head yeah legm I couldn't figure out how to mimic his legm situation so I gave up yes but yeah um listen I this interior has always been a couple cuts below the other options that have been out there and the reason you get this car is oh my God yeah that's been rattling like a bastard for the entire day too that would not happen with a new M3 it just wouldn't no it just wouldn't and this screen despite being updated is not good enough and what car what does car just like this isn't it yeah yeah well it doesn't matter because they've got this nice big shape here and then they just put a little screen behind it they didn't even attempt to like like what BMW would do is they would make all of this screen and use all the real EST the black levels would be better yeah it's just it's not it's not good enough for that much money you you're so much of what you're paying for in this car is the the amount of R&D that went into designing the chassis and the whole experience of driving this thing around a corner but as as a result of that datedness the only bit of piano black is like that so every you know there's lots of physical buttons the physical buttons are great easy to use I really it's very easy to use interior other than the fact that the infotainment is slower than my first iPhone now when I plug it in and try and use it n that's that looks it's so laggy that's not great also this little wireless charging pad for some reason if anything gets anywhere near it as you're driving fore an object detected and wireless charging pad will pop up does it stop charging I don't know I could barely get apple carplay to work my phone got really hot right lots of things happened just the zenap phobia of this section just threw you off what um anyway I'm very glad we got back into this and I'm very glad that you know you got a chance to live with it beyond my time with it in LA I I I really enjoy driving this car in Anger more than all of the other sports and ends except for maybe the ct5v Blackwing like that car CT 5V Blackwing is such a wonderful machine to drive hard not that the M3 isn't but this just has this like it's just so nice to drive I love it it's it's really it's a good car it's a really good car and this car's time is coming to an end yeah cuz it's 80 yes this generation has been around for a while and it's a played out sentiment but we are going to miss the quadrifolio when it's gone after this year it was always one of those other options that felt like the more interesting or daring Choice there are fewer of them on the road than BMWs or Audi's or Mercedes and due to their reputation of reliability warranted or not purchasing a Julia represents making perhaps a more bold decision one that prioritizes driving enjoyment and style over things like interor Thea finishes and well obvious common sense and for that decision you're rewarded with one of the most delectable driving experiences a sports sedan can offer and as we discovered today so much of the quadrifolio personality exists in its lower trims so if you're like James and the tiny bit of extra funds necessary to purchase even one extra shirt button scares you then the good news is that you can have a decent slice of driving fun at some pretty re reasonable prices thanks for watchinghey hey it's me yeah it happened again oh no yeah trust me the irony is not lost to me it started what 15 minutes ago I'm not going to make it damn it yeah Paulo stopping me from instantly saying I would take this over any other sports sedan on the market I like the exposed carbon weave well that's new this year and it looks clean yeah no the design is pretty but it isn't any different to the interior of that other one except for when this is only new this year this exposed carbon fiber it was shiny before right and a digital gauge cluster is new this year it's a very nice digital it's a very nice one that in race mode yes give me race and this one hasn't been optioned with the very very cool car fiber seats oh yeah right yeah this has just got the normal seats and these seats are exactly the same as those seats but I like I like the the CRA folio differences I like the subtle alatar on the wheel I like the carbon fiber here it changes the exhaust so much in race mode it's cool seats are reasonably comfortable the seat the interior and the seats are very very nice it's all tons of head room it's a really well-designed interior except for the fact that it's weirdly difficult to get out of the car because I don't know this must have something to do with why the chassis is so stiff but this B pillar is massive and it's like right there right like check your blind spot yeah you can't there's a bar there also when you sit low the wing mirror takes up a lot of your vision as well does yeah yeah but I I remembered this having a terrible back seat and it doesn't actually it's reasonably comfortable I fit fine I'm 510 uh we haven't got Harrison here today because congrats to Harrison he's the proud father of twins but I managed to find a Harrison extender for myself and there isn't enough head room for a 6'6 man you're talking about head yeah legm I couldn't figure out how to mimic his legm situation so I gave up yes but yeah um listen I this interior has always been a couple cuts below the other options that have been out there and the reason you get this car is oh my God yeah that's been rattling like a bastard for the entire day too that would not happen with a new M3 it just wouldn't no it just wouldn't and this screen despite being updated is not good enough and what car what does car just like this isn't it yeah yeah well it doesn't matter because they've got this nice big shape here and then they just put a little screen behind it they didn't even attempt to like like what BMW would do is they would make all of this screen and use all the real EST the black levels would be better yeah it's just it's not it's not good enough for that much money you you're so much of what you're paying for in this car is the the amount of R&D that went into designing the chassis and the whole experience of driving this thing around a corner but as as a result of that datedness the only bit of piano black is like that so every you know there's lots of physical buttons the physical buttons are great easy to use I really it's very easy to use interior other than the fact that the infotainment is slower than my first iPhone now when I plug it in and try and use it n that's that looks it's so laggy that's not great also this little wireless charging pad for some reason if anything gets anywhere near it as you're driving fore an object detected and wireless charging pad will pop up does it stop charging I don't know I could barely get apple carplay to work my phone got really hot right lots of things happened just the zenap phobia of this section just threw you off what um anyway I'm very glad we got back into this and I'm very glad that you know you got a chance to live with it beyond my time with it in LA I I I really enjoy driving this car in Anger more than all of the other sports and ends except for maybe the ct5v Blackwing like that car CT 5V Blackwing is such a wonderful machine to drive hard not that the M3 isn't but this just has this like it's just so nice to drive I love it it's it's really it's a good car it's a really good car and this car's time is coming to an end yeah cuz it's 80 yes this generation has been around for a while and it's a played out sentiment but we are going to miss the quadrifolio when it's gone after this year it was always one of those other options that felt like the more interesting or daring Choice there are fewer of them on the road than BMWs or Audi's or Mercedes and due to their reputation of reliability warranted or not purchasing a Julia represents making perhaps a more bold decision one that prioritizes driving enjoyment and style over things like interor Thea finishes and well obvious common sense and for that decision you're rewarded with one of the most delectable driving experiences a sports sedan can offer and as we discovered today so much of the quadrifolio personality exists in its lower trims so if you're like James and the tiny bit of extra funds necessary to purchase even one extra shirt button scares you then the good news is that you can have a decent slice of driving fun at some pretty re reasonable prices thanks for watching\n"
