The Challenge: Building a Fun Car to Drive Every Day and One That's Capable at the Track
After getting their Turbo's mostly installed, Nolan and his team set off on an 800-mile journey to New Mexico. This trip marked the end of one challenge and the beginning of another - testing the two objectives of their car-building endeavor: building a fun car that you don't hate driving every day, and one that's capable at the track. In a pack of wolves, it's the strongest wolf that walks last, serving as a metaphor for their approach to car development.
As they delved deeper into the project, Nolan and his team realized that testing objective number one - building a fun car you don't hate driving every day - had been the most frustrating part of the process. Their low-car did not have AC, which was a necessary feature in the southwest during the hot summer months, and their high-car broke down repeatedly, making it unreliable. "Repeatedly," Nolan joked, as they found themselves on the side of the road for an extended period.
Despite these setbacks, the team finally made it to Albuquerque, got the cars tuned and running almost perfectly, and it was time to test objective number two - building a car that's capable at the track. To do so, they chose one of the tiny road courses in Sandia and ran it at night, creating an exciting highlight of their project. "Roll that sweet, sweet footage," Nolan exclaimed, capturing the essence of their endeavor.
With all four team members driving each car and taking the average of their times, the results were astounding. The low-car's fastest time was a 46.15 seconds, with Aaron at the helm, while the high-car's fastest time was a 43.47 seconds, also driven by Aaron. "Wow," Nolan exclaimed, impressed by the significant difference between the two cars.
However, Nolan and his team soon realized that the true measure of success wasn't just about which car was faster but also about affordability. The high-car was a costly endeavor, and the team couldn't help but wonder if they could afford it. "Yes, but actually no," Nolan said, explaining that despite their best efforts, neither car was within reach.
The team's discussion on the merits of each car led them to a surprising conclusion - finding a middle ground between building a fun car you don't hate driving every day and one that's capable at the track. "Let's meet each other in the middle," Nolan suggested, emphasizing the importance of balance in their project. This newfound approach was a refreshing departure from their previous endeavors and marked an exciting development in their car-building journey.
As the episode came to a close, Nolan reflected on the experience, stating that it had been a wild, wild ride. He was grateful for his team's company and looked forward to their next adventure together. The project may be over, but its impact would continue to be felt, inspiring others to pursue their passions and never give up.
In conclusion, Nolan and his team's journey was one of trial and error, perseverance, and camaraderie. By building two cars that served different purposes, they demonstrated the importance of balance in life and the value of exploring various interests. As they look to the future, it's clear that their car-building endeavor has left a lasting impression, and their enthusiasm for new projects will continue to inspire others.
The Future Ahead: A Second Season and More
As Nolan concluded his thoughts on the project, the team revealed that a second season of "Hi-Low" was already in the works. Fans were eagerly anticipating what's next, and the team promised to bring even more excitement and challenges to their next endeavor. The future is bright, and with their experience under their belts, Nolan and his team are ready to take on new adventures.
In addition to the upcoming season, the team announced plans for a new show called "Up To Speed." This series would delve into the world of car racing, exploring the intricacies of competition and the thrill of speed. Zach Jobe, who was seen in the previous episode, would be joining forces with Nolan once again, bringing his expertise to the table.
Furthermore, the team is launching a new car club called "BoostCreeps," which promises to bring together like-minded individuals passionate about cars and driving. Merchandise will also be available soon, allowing fans to show their enthusiasm for the project.
Before signing off, Nolan thanked his audience for joining him on this journey and encouraged them to follow him and his team on social media. With his infectious energy and passion for car-building, Nolan has built a loyal following, and it's clear that he'll continue to inspire others with his creativity and dedication.
As the article comes to a close, we can't help but feel grateful for the experience of watching Nolan and his team build two incredible cars. Their journey serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most rewarding experiences come from embracing challenges and finding balance in life.
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- $13,000 Turbo 350Z.- Versus $33,000 Twin-Turbo 350Z.- Does more expensive mean more better?- Let's find out.- Once and for all.- Good job.- Yeah.- So in sync.- We bought two identical Nissan 350Z'sand over the past two weeks,we have been modifying them to be fun, daily divers that youcan take to the track. This car got a bunch of really cheap partsand in the end, it's a slammed Turbo-Zthat shoots flames. All around, $13,000.- My car on the other hand got a bunchof really nice, expensive stuff, totallingan astounding $33,000...into a 15 year old car.- We tested them to see which componentsare actually worth spending the money on.On today's episode,we're going to break downthe cost of building these two cars, test them head-to-head on track, and decide which is better.- To do this, we took ourcars on an 800 mile journeyto the most prestigious racecourse in North America.Sandia Speedway in beautifulAlbuquerque, New Mexico.- The fastest time was-- But before we could race,we had to build our cars. And build our cars...- We did.- Join us on this journey, won't you?- Yeah.- Now we've cometo the end of the road. It's why I make the big bucks.- Four million an episode, right?- For Hi-Low, I make fourmillion dollars an episode.- We started out with suspension.Low car got a set of eBaycoilovers of unknown origin.- And high car was treatedto a set of KW V-3's.- After discovering how much less travelthe eBay coilovers hadcompared to the KW's,I was afraid that the ride qualityin my car was going to be awful.- I'm going to say thatthese cheap coiloversare not symmetrical. This one's longer.- This looks shorter than this one.- It is...shorter.- Surprisingly, thesuspension rode just finein both testing and on the road trip, but the amount of adjustment paledin comparison to the KW's.- That's right the V-3'ssoaked up every bumpin the road like it was nothing. And I don't really care about not havinga low ride height because I'm a grown up.- Hmm.- Next we installed wheels and tires.High car got some sickAdvan RG III's wrappedin Bridgestone RE-71's.The Advans are light as F,and made the high car look sophisticated.- It really did.Meanwhile, on the low car,we bought some XXR 527's and decidedto run Federal RS-RR tires. I really likedthe way my budget wheels looked.Even more than the pricey Advans.- You're wrong.- And we were all impressed withthe Federal tires' performance.- I actually preferred the cheap tires.- Yeah because they had more slide to themand you didn't really feel badabout doing burnouts with the cheap tires.- Yeah.- After that it was timeto upgrade the brakes.Aaron and I installed moreaggressive brake pads,steel-braided brake lines which gave usa stiffer brake pedal feeland more aggressive bite.- The high car, Zach, the team, and I replacedthe car's entire braking systemwith a six-piston, 13-inch brake kit.The install was definitelymore time consuming, but we were confidentwe would come out on topin the brake torture test.- Which was immediatelyconfirmed the next daywhen the low car's brakes caught on fire-- Caught on fire! Literally.- In my opinion, the whole brake upgradewe did on the low car is somethingI would absolutely do, but don't expectto get the same level of performanceas a fully dedicated, Wilwood brake kit.- After the brake test,we went inside of our Z's.High car got two Sparco QRT-R seats,a GReddy steering wheel, and a quick release hubso no one can steal it out of my driveway.- Low car received some Corbeau DFX'swhich I find to be morecomfortable than your Sparco's.We did have to modify the seat railsto make sure that we got the perfect fit,but other than that itwent pretty smoothly.- Until we got to the rollcages. Roll cages did not-- Did not go smoothly.- Did not work out.- Uh-uh.- Not even close?- No.- Well that's all theway back on the slider.- So we just spent thelast six hours tryingto fit our roll cages into the Z'sand we're finally throwing in the towel.- We unintentionally learned the hard waythat you get what you pay for and thatthe universal roll bars we boughtfor both cars didn't fit. That was a rough day.- That was the only daythat made the cars worsebecause we took outall of the plastic trimand then we had to put it back inbut now there's likespots where it falls off.Like the doorsill, every time I get outand kick it with my foot,it comes off. Sucks.Next, both cars were fittedwith modified differentialsto make sick skids possible.High car got a very niceKaaz two-way differential.Zach spent a lot of timeadjusting the spacing,I lubed it up, it was perfect.- Over on low car, we tooka slightly different route. We welded ours together.Welding a differential locks the axles, making skids a cinch. But it also makes tightturns...interesting.- Stop, stop, stop.- After we had LSD's both carswere able to do burnoutsand drifts with ease.A lot more ease if your nameis Aaron Parker or Zach Jobe.- After making a bunchof performance upgrades,it was time to alter the looks of our Z's.- Looks nice.- Caused quite a stir on the old internet.- Yeah. I decided to givelow car some Plasti Dipwhich was a huge disaster because I hadthe wrong tools and didn't knowwhat the hell I was doing.I was humbled that day.I'm beside myself, this is the worst thingI've ever done.- Over on team high,we were fake rich boysfor the day and took our car toa professional vinyl shop and couldn'thave been happier with the results. It turns out when you comparean amateur dumb-dumb boy, like Nolan,to trained professionals, the pros do a better job.- Tried my best.- I knew you were going to do a bad job.- Well thanks, wow. (beep) you dude.- So now we had cars that looked great, handled great, were great to sit in,so we decided to make our lives miserableand awesome, and boost them.My car got a Jim Wolf Twin Turbo set upthat made it sound like a little baby GTR.- Low car got a singleTurbo kit by way of eBay.- We literally reachedour breaking point duringthis Turbo install.Nolan almost quit Donut.Luckily for our team, the Jim Wolf kit camewith an exhaustive instruction bookwith hundreds and hundredsupon hundreds of steps.- While our cheap Turbohad no instructions at all.- Not sure if that'sthe way that's actuallygoing to go, but we cantry, see if it'll fit.- But, we were wishing it didbecause I was at wit'send. I yelled at Eddie.I'm sorry Eddie.- You good Nolan?- No, Eddie, I'm not good. What the (beep) you think, dude?- After getting ourTurbo's mostly installed,we set off on the 800 milejourney to New Mexico. In a pack of wolves,it's the strongest wolfthat walks last. Now this show has two objectives, build a fun car you don'thate driving everyday, and two, build a car that'scapable at the track.- We tested objective number one inthe previous episode. Both cars kind of failed.Low car didn't have AC,which you kind of needin the southwest and highcar broke down repeatedly.- Repeatedly.- We're on the side of the road right now.I'm not sure what we're going to do.- I think you should driveit into the Grand Canyon.Despite these set backs,we finally made itto Albuquerque, got thecars tuned and running, almost perfectly, and it was finally timeto test objective number two.- Roll that sweet, sweet footage.- There's a couple really cool, little, tiny road courses in Sandia. So we're going to choose one of themand we're going to run it at night. This is really thehighlight of the past weeksof frustrating work that we've done.Just like, you know, it's like competitionbut let's have a good time out there.- Yeah, dude.- You guys ready?- I'm in a car without a clutch.- It's so unruly and you're justlike bouncing off of stuff.- All right. We're good, we're good.- It just- you want to beat it upand you don't feel bad beating it up.- What does that count as?- He's still-- So to keep the results consistentand scientific, all fourof us drove each carand we took the averageof all of our times.- Woo!- 10 seconds (muffled).- And there was a big difference.- Huge difference between the two.- I love it.- All right.- It makes no sense.- The official results. We'll start with the low car.- Okay.- The fastest time was by Aaronand it was a 46.15.- In the low?- In the low.- 46.15.- The high car fastesttime, also by Aaron, was a 43.47.- Wow.- Three seconds?- Three seconds faster.- Nice driving.- It was the platform. The platform.- Give Nolan credit, Nolanwas right behind Aaronby only two tenths of a second-.- Dang.- In the high car so Nolanhad the second fastest time.- So I guess the lesson learnedis Zach Jobe and I need to get behindthe wheel a little bitmore, congratulationsto the low team, andwe'll check you guys backat Donut headquarters when wedecided which one's better. So, Nolan, does more expensivemean more better?- Yes, but actually no. Obviously, the high car was faster. That being said,we did spend a lot of moneyto make a Z that good.- Literally we're talkingcheap Porsche money,at this point. So which one would you buy?I know my answer. Neither.- Yeah, neither.- No, no, no. You can't.- Ugh.- We can't? Mid car?- Nah you gotta buy one.- You gotta buy one.- Okay, all right. (beep),I can't afford one.Yeah, I guess...No, because low car sucksand high car's too expensive.- Yeah.- The big takeaway from the whole showis do it in the middle.Low car sucks and highcar is way too expensive. No one here could afford tobuild a car like high car.Like most things in life, being extreme on either side, you're wrong.Let's meet each other in the middle.Let's have a discussion, let's talk it out. It's been a wild, wild ride.I'm glad that you were by my side.- This is was like the most fun thingwe've ever done.- We're going to do a second seasonof Hi-Low very soon. Letus know in the commentswhat cars you'd like us to do,but until then check outall of our other shows.Up To Speed, Bumper 2 Bumper, WheelHouse,Money Pit coming soon with Zach Jobe, who you saw in this series.- BoostCreeps.- We started a car club,BoostCreeps merch coming soon.Follow Nolan on Instagram @Noalnjsykes,follow me @Jamespumphrey,follow both of us @Donutmedia.- Seriously, thank youso much for watchingand doing this with us.
