New Features and Updates in iOS 16.4
Apple has officially released iOS 16.4, and in this video, we'll go over what's new in this latest update. Starting off with everyone's favorite new emojis, there are 21 new emojis in all, including shaking head, Ginger, pink, blue, and gray hearts, a donkey, a moose, jellyfish, and more.
Web Apps Now Support Push Notifications
In iOS 16.4 and iPad OS 16.4, web apps can now send push notifications just like on Macs. This is a feature that Apple first announced at WWDC with the introduction of iOS 16 and is now starting to roll out. Web apps added to a user's home screen can request permission to receive push notifications through a subscribe button or another similar direct interaction. Notifications for home screen web apps can also be incorporated into Focus, allowing them to be rolled into daily summaries.
Configuring Web App Notifications
There are options for configuring where and how to receive web app notifications, as well as badges for those web apps that will appear on your home screen. This feature is available in both iOS 16.4 and iPad OS 16.4.
Adding Websites to Home Screen via Third-Party Browser
You can now add websites to your home screen via a third-party browser like Chrome with iOS 16.4 and iPad OS 16.4. Those who are enrolled in Apple's developer program are able to turn on developer betas directly from the software updates section in the settings app, eliminating the need for pesky profile installs.
Simplified Developer Beta Process
This will actually simplify the whole downloading process and make it easier for public beta testers to install updates with a lot less hassle.
The Traditional Page Training Animation is Back
The traditional page training animation that has been around since the early days of the books app is now back after it was removed recently, much to the delight of hardcore Apple Books users.
Podcast App Updates
Apple made several updates to the podcast app, including channels access in the library section. The "up next" feature allows you to resume episodes you've started and start new ones with ease. There's also an option to find new podcast options in browse in Apple Music. Additionally, there is a prominent button for accessing your profile, making it easier than ever to get to your profile settings.
Coverage Interface Updates
There is now an updated coverage interface that shows you the warranty information of your iPhone and connected devices like Apple watches and AirPods. This provides more transparency and convenience for users.
Shortcuts with Lock Screen and Always-On Display Control
There are options in shortcuts for creating workflows that lock a device's screen and control the always-on display. Additionally, there is an option to automatically enable or disable stage manager on the iPad.
Voice Isolation Feature
When making a call, you can now turn on voice isolation to cut down on background noise. This feature was previously available for FaceTime and some other services but has been expanded in iOS 16.4.
Duplicate Photos Removal
The option to remove duplicate photos that Apple introduced in iOS 16 has been expanded to the iCloud shared photo library in iOS 16.4. If you have an iCloud shared photo library, you can go to the utilities album and choose the duplicates option to merge them.
Minor Tweaks and Fixes
There are even more minor tweaks and fixes that we just didn't have time to include in this video or are too minor to be worth discussing. However, if you want to see a full list of these updates, you can check out the guide linked in the description below.
