SUPER CLEAN Turbo KA24 Nissan 240SX - One Take

The Love Affair with Coupe Cars: A Discussion with Zack Clapman

Zack Clapman has always been fascinated by coupe cars, particularly the S14 and Nissan 240SX. In this discussion, he shares his thoughts on these vehicles, their design, and his experiences with them.

For Zack, there's something special about coupe cars that sets them apart from other types of vehicles. "I've always loved the coupes," he says. "That's 13 coupes a lot! I like that wedge look, but this [S14] is so funny that in my brain, it looks like a much bigger car than the 13." This perception may be due to the way the S14 was designed, with its angular lines and sloping roofline creating a more aggressive stance. Despite their size, these cars have a reputation for being highly maneuverable and easy to drive.

One of the key factors that contributes to the appeal of coupe cars is their driving dynamics. For Zack, this is one of the most important aspects to consider when modifying or owning a car like the S14. "Sutta," he says, referring to the Nissan 240SX community, "they're so easy to drive; they feel so good." This sense of connection and responsiveness is hard to find in other cars, making the coupe an attractive option for driving enthusiasts.

When it comes to modifying his car, Zack has a clear idea of what he wants to achieve. He's always looking to improve performance without sacrificing handling or stability. "I think like a little more aggressive alignment and made from some front bar to help the front bite," he says, referring to potential modifications that would enhance the car's behavior on the track.

Zack also appreciates the design of his S14. "These are suutta; they're so easy to drive." He finds their proportions to be aesthetically pleasing and enjoys the way they look in various lighting conditions. Whether he's cruising down the street or tearing up a track, Zack feels confident in his ability to handle his car.

The history of Nissan 240SX cars is an interesting one. For Zack, owning a car like this has been a dream for a long time. He remembers getting behind the wheel at a young age and feeling a sense of excitement and freedom. "I will always have a sweet spot for these cars," he says. "I will own one someday."

In addition to his love of coupe cars, Zack is also grateful for the experience of working on them with his father. He recalls learning how to repair and maintain his car from a young age, which has served him well over the years. "My dad wanted me to learn how to build it with work on cars so I can maintain it at least very good," he says.

As Zack continues to modify and drive his S14, he's always looking for ways to improve its performance and handling. He's explored various boost settings, including sport and Sport Plus modes, which have helped him fine-tune the car's response. By experimenting with different parameters, he's been able to unlock the full potential of his vehicle.

In the end, Zack's love affair with coupe cars is one that will continue for a long time. Whether he's driving on public roads or competing at the track, he knows that his S14 is capable of delivering an exceptional driving experience.

A Look Inside Zack's Garage: An Engine Bay Analysis

Zack recently shared his 240SX with us, and we were impressed by the level of detail in the engine bay. As we take a closer look at this area, it's clear that Zack has put a lot of thought into how he wants to maintain and modify his car.

The first thing we notice is the cleanliness of the engine bay. It looks like Zack and his team have worked hard to ensure that every component is in its proper place. This attention to detail is evident throughout the vehicle, from the clean wiring looms to the well-organized toolboxes.

One of the most impressive aspects of Zack's 240SX is the level of work that has gone into modifying the engine. The car features a number of upgrades, including a front bar and alignment adjustments, which have helped to improve its performance on the track.

As we examine the engine more closely, it becomes clear that these modifications have paid off. The car's boost levels are well-controlled, and the turbocharger sounds smooth and refined. By experimenting with different parameters, Zack has been able to find a sweet spot for his vehicle, one that balances power and handling.

The History of Nissan 240SX: A Community Perspective

For those who may not be familiar with the Nissan 240SX community, this car has a rich history that spans several decades. From its humble beginnings as a budget-friendly import to its current status as a highly sought-after collector's item, the 240SX has captured the hearts of many enthusiasts.

One of the key factors that contributes to the appeal of the 240SX is its reputation for being easy to drive and maintain. The car's design, with its angular lines and sloping roofline, makes it feel agile and responsive on the road. Whether you're cruising down the highway or tearing up a track, the 240SX has proven itself to be a highly capable vehicle.

The community surrounding the 240SX is also an important aspect of its appeal. For those who are new to the scene, this car is often seen as a gateway vehicle, one that provides a stepping stone for enthusiasts who want to explore more complex modifications and upgrades.

As we look at Zack's 240SX in relation to this broader community, it becomes clear that there's more to owning these cars than just their performance capabilities. For many enthusiasts, the experience of driving and modifying a 240SX is one that fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.

A Word from Zack: The Importance of Community

As we conclude our discussion with Zack Clapman, it becomes clear that his love affair with coupe cars is not just about personal preference – but also about the community he's found through this shared interest. "I will always have a sweet spot for these cars," he says, "and I'll always be grateful for the experience of working on them with my dad."

For Zack, owning and driving a car like the S14 is not just about enjoying a hobby – but also about connecting with others who share his passion. Whether it's participating in track days or attending local meets, Zack knows that he's part of something bigger than himself.

As we look to the future, it becomes clear that Zack's love affair with coupe cars will continue for years to come. Whether he's driving on public roads or competing at the track, he knows that his S14 is capable of delivering an exceptional driving experience – one that will keep him coming back for more.

sad day because this is a 240sx and if you've been listening to the smoking tire for a while on the podcast I was basically shopping for a 240sx for six months before I bought my e46 m3 so today I'm gonna learn if I made the right decision or the wrong decision or if they're both good decisions and I just need to make more money it's kind of we're gonna figure out so this is Tomas very nice to meet you thank you for driving up from Anaheim to bring this because your car is beautiful and it's when you pulled up it's got a really cool metal flake and then you told me it's a wrap and I have my wrap experience is very limited but it's a really nice looking wrap the stance is nice you're doing all the things to make me upset about what I bought so so thank you for that so tell us what this is and how long you've had it it's a 1997 Nissan 240sx cooky I got it when I was 13 I'm 20 now so about seven years you got on your 13 yeah before I drove my my dad wanted me to learn how to work on cars before I started driving so okay props to him he's here also today that's really cool it's a ke instead of the usual sr20 swamp but it has the s 15 turbo the 85 850cc power enterprise injectors the in the hole if he opened the hood the whole like idea of the turbo kit was to make it look kind of stock they got sleeper it's really clean yeah it's really clean so from that from the engine you wouldn't think it's too modified but from the outside it kind of looks more loud than the engine so the it's a has a 15 million meter over feathers in the rear and then in the front it's just bolt on flares that the bodyshop molded in to the front fenders sort of like Selma stock as SSR d5r wheels pain suspension making your upper control arms and rear toe arms and z32 Frederick's it's pretty much it's pretty it feels like it's all like simple modifications meaning like you didn't you know you don't have a thousand other coilover system but it's simple but it's smart it's like you know you you were having geometry changes under compression so you do those toe arms and the upper control arms and it fixes that right front brakes obviously like brakes are important people even though yeah 16 year old Zack would tell you you don't need brakes 35 year olds X has unique brakes I'm really stoked about this car looks great sits right and you know it's a K 80 people were have talked about them as if they explode all the time but then I've talked to some others if you build them correctly you know they last and you had seven years to do it so it's probably only being turbo for the past year and a half two years okay the first turbo setup I had actually speaking of kids blowing up if you kind of the ring lands and the Stark Pistons okay that that was because it was I was like I'm still in high school I didn't I was like a $300 turbo key the whole set up it wasn't doing it was f mu e bay turbo you don't say that a 300 auger turbo kid blew up and didn't have a tune on it yeah get out of here so I job it probably my whole senior year at high school it was running rich and everything you can smell it but they lost compression one day and you wouldn't run anymore so that's what I mean took it apart and put forged pistons in it why school Pistons oh okay so this is like a built ka now didn't as far as the Pistons are forged new bearings ARB head studs that's pretty much it alright so built built built to last yeah Duralast I'm gonna get sued for using cover in term all right well let's let's take off now and we keep talking about this oh man this is gonna be a problem I'm really I'm gonna like this a lot okay right away your throttle is sensitive not too sensitive but there's like no slack to it which is really nice brake pedal has a little bit actually feels a lot like my car which isn't really a compliment it's got a little bit of softness at the top and then it grabs and I'm sure you know what I'm talking about my cart is the same thing and you know I've got Pat's fluid and stainless line then still it's just something that you know the brake boosters do yeah soccer boosters right instead of noisy you have these two buttons down here in the center console and you start explaining to me and I started laughing so we hit before we're rolling cameras so what are these two little buttons here that I will show it give people a shot of yeah sure try it we won't have it on the whole time because we won't really hear all right a little more drone and then a lot more drone when you let off oh okay there's a lot more noise now yeah all right now I hear let's see can you set it back to exhaust going out the back this is hilarious I feel like you are simultaneously like a mature of mature man because you started you started buildings near 13 so you've probably made your mistakes at 16 whereas most people make their mistakes when they're like 22 and then they figured out on the 28th so you're 28 but 20 if that map made sense to anybody I hope it did steering feel is there's not a lot of slop at all I I remember that the first 240 I drove was at drift 101 the drift school and everyone should go to that it's the best thing in the world and I came away really impressed with how intuitive the car was to drive it felt really familiar I felt like a big Miata and this feels the same way like the steering isn't super heavy it you know I would like a little more weight if I was going to nitpick but it's very direct and car is quick but it's not I don't know it's not soil your pants quick it's definitely enough for someone who's 20 years old good amount of push or it's alright good amount of thrust and starts building what wind is Boost built in this car like wow that's really all right we're so we're up it we're up at 4 grand I'm like I'm gonna slow down a little bit and we'll do a little pull from like 3rd at 3 grand here we go so from three full full throttle and now boosting more more more more MORE yeah it's really progressive there's no there's no spike and there's no you know it doesn't feel like you go up a cliff at any point and it doesn't feel like you hit a wall so it's a nice party you said you haven't dyno tuned it how did you do this this is me it's pretty known in the okay Wow like you've got you've hit a lot attention to your supporting structure here like you've got a fr gauge you had go 0-2 heater was on like I mean you I guess you learned when you were younger when the car broke and you don't want it to break again I mean people can probably hear we are getting tire up over some of these bumps the cars the car is pretty low it's it's not quite I can't get into my driveway low but it's close I'm gonna turn around these cars are so easy to drive they just like the weight balance is perfect I feel like the wheelbase is perfect it's like ninety nine inches I mean that's why there's there's such good drift platforms they're really good race platforms a friend of mine has a 240 with stock ka natural aspirated his track car so it's like caged and stripped and he's running sub 2 minutes a Buttonwillow and we have a friend of mine has a 500-horsepower 135i that is trying to crack two minutes you know so this 240 has a third of the power and he's running a quicker time it just they're just natural drivers cars they do feel right at home the visibility is insane it almost feels like a mid-engine car there the front of the hood just slopes away so quick I mean I feel like I can see my own feet brake pedal is good got a little like little vibration in the shifter have you done like transmission bushings and engine more bikes the parents say PNM sort ship sway bars it off it's interesting like I can feel although all the bumps are going over I mean the car feels incredibly saw it there's not a squeak in here which is a testament to 90s Japanese build quality the suspension stiffness I think is transmitting some of that and then when we go into the corner like right at the end of adhesion there's like a little more lien in the front than I was expecting and like a little gentle understeer so it sucked it's not turning in super hard it actually feels like like there's a little more grip at the back than the front but you know it's a work in progress like you and I like that you've done a lot of things to this car to help it keep working you know instead of I don't know it's we treat trying to impress upon people like build the car evenly you know some suspensions some brakes some some reliability and then go around the circle again if you put all your money into one area you know unless you have the bankroll to keep going you end up with a car that's out of balance really see it runs out of steam a little bit like 55 so what have you done with this car as far as are you gonna track it drift it is it is it just like I mean it's a great education for working on cars like what's your next step but I wanted it to why why would you go has 13 yep I see I've always loved the coupe's that's 13 coupes a lot I like that wedge look but this it's so funny that in my brain the s14 looks like a much bigger car than the 13 but it's not it's just something about the way they designed it these are sutta they're so easy to drive they feel so good you know I mean your car like I can understand it's a little low for a track because we're getting a little bit of wheels a tire tire rub not a ton but it's happening people can hear it but everything just feels like just feels at home by doing this stuff that's what it is it doesn't feel like you're making it do something it doesn't want to do I think like a little more aggressive alignment and made from some front bar to help the front bite because like right now it feels like there there's the front like wandering just a little bit yeah little understeer not a lot I mean understeer safer than oversteer but so are you are you trying to go into like fabrication or is this why did your dad want you to learn how to build it with work on cars so I can maintain it at least very good and then you can do the work yourself you understand how it works really good points Oh which boost setting have we been in by the way okay good I just wanted to check I drove a car a few weeks ago or if you're just watching this video now could be five years ago and we were in sport not Sport Plus and you know the mapping was definitely different and the car was still really quick but I just wanted to check I will always have a sweet spot for these cars and I will own one one day like I know I didn't buy one because yeah I know it automatically turns off its eco mode okay I know it's fine now it's a v12 like I knew that if I bought one of these I didn't have the know-how on Japanese cars and turbo systems to maintain it if something went wrong and I knew that the stock powerplant was gonna be too slow for what I wanted to do so it was just at the end of it I was like I can't I don't want I can't put myself into position where my daily driver which is what my BMW is has a complicated system that I have to learn how to repair all the time and but as a second car or as a drift car or even as like I don't know I just I really like them I've liked it for a long time I think they look really good even though they're it's like a simple design but they just have the right proportions cool shape and you know as we all know by the drift tax like the chassis dynamics are just great you know you can put any engine you want these things and they'll be happy I'm really stoked for you dude I think your dad's doing a great job of I mean what a cool thing like he just rolls a car in your garage when you're 13 like here's your classroom you know we're gonna build this thing together learn to work on it and now you understand it and you're only 20 and you know I'd say 90% of the modification is just just between the two of us that is really cool that's really cool and that's a great experience to have I think felt really good I mean power being felt nice and broad no pedal like brake pedal phil was pretty good with it except for that little softness up top with other than that they were grabbing nice yeah you know it's not a track car so a little bit of tire up that's fine I don't thought great in the corners felt pretty even with just a little bit understeer I like these so much like I'm not going at the point where I want to sell my car to go buy one you thought but it was a really hard decision and so I when you said hey man can you want to drive my car it's a it was like 240sx like you already had me at 240sx and then it's k80 interesting the engine bay is really clean looks like you guys have put the work into the right places so hopefully it works for would work streak for a really long time yeah man thank you just thanks a lot I appreciate it everyone thank you for watching I hope you enjoyed that keep up with everything on the smoking tire podcast we're doing two week we've filmed them live and put them on YouTube live you can ask questions in super chat or they go up afterwards on iTunes wherever you get podcasting interpret et cetera it's a good I think they look really good even though they're it's like a simple design but they just have the right proportions cool shape and you know as we all know by the drift tax like the chassis dynamics are just great you know you can put any engine you want these things and they'll be happy I'm really stoked for you dude I think your dad's doing a great job of I mean what a cool thing like he just rolls a car in your garage when you're 13 like here's your classroom you know we're gonna build this thing together learn to work on it and now you understand it and you're only 20 and you know I'd say 90% of the modification is just just between the two of us that is really cool that's really cool and that's a great experience to have I think felt really good I mean power being felt nice and broad no pedal like brake pedal phil was pretty good with it except for that little softness up top with other than that they were grabbing nice yeah you know it's not a track car so a little bit of tire up that's fine I don't thought great in the corners felt pretty even with just a little bit understeer I like these so much like I'm not going at the point where I want to sell my car to go buy one you thought but it was a really hard decision and so I when you said hey man can you want to drive my car it's a it was like 240sx like you already had me at 240sx and then it's k80 interesting the engine bay is really clean looks like you guys have put the work into the right places so hopefully it works for would work streak for a really long time yeah man thank you just thanks a lot I
