7 DESIGNER TRICKS I ALWAYS USE!

Transforming Your Space with Lighting and Mirrors

That's what I like to do when I'm making over a room, it's huge and I always go all in. I'm going to address the lighting that does already exist in the room, because let's be real, some of that existing lighting can be done away with. One of the biggest things that I like to change is the chandelier. If the room doesn't have a chandelier, why not add one? Why not add a really amazing center light into a space that doesn't have one? You might just be able to switch out what you've got and upgrade those fixtures to go-to places like Pottery Barn, West Elm, Visual Comfort. These are where I go when I want to spend a little bit more and get top-quality lighting. But you can also find great options at Home Depot and Amazon. The key is to think about your lighting more in-depth, consider adding some low light into the space as well, like table lights, table lamps or floor lamps. This will really make a space feel luxurious and transform the way it feels when you're sitting in it.

Lighting really does have that effect on a space. It makes it feel Ultra luxurious and transforms the way the space feels when you're living in it. One final thing to consider is adding mirrors. Mirrors are magic, they literally make a space feel bigger by bouncing light into it. I recently did this in my own bedroom, where RH had placed the mirrors over my nightstands. At first, I was hesitant and wanted to come up with my own design, but then I thought, why not? It worked beautifully and immediately made the space feel brighter and more spacious. I also added some full-size mirrors on a wall, which really changed the feel of the room. Mirrors can be used in so many different ways - you can hang them as high up as possible to create the illusion of a bigger space, or add several smaller ones together to create a large focal point.

The effect of mirrors is almost like having a diamond ring - it just glistens and adds a level of luxury to the space. They're also surprisingly inexpensive, with many options available on Amazon or from brands like IKEA. If you want to spend a bit more, you can look into pieces from brands like Paragould, which offer high-quality details that really make an impact. Either way, adding mirrors is a simple yet effective way to transform your space and add that extra touch of luxury.

For me, lighting and mirrors are key elements in creating a luxurious and transformed space. By considering these elements more deeply, you can take your room from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether it's adding a show-stopping chandelier or incorporating mirrors into the design, there are so many options available to create that perfect look. So go ahead, get creative, and don't be afraid to try new things - with lighting and mirrors, the possibilities are endless.

If you want to see more of my own transformation project, I'll have a full tour posted online soon. In the meantime, check out some of my favorite resources for all things home decor and design. From high-end brands like Pottery Barn and West Elm, to budget-friendly options on Amazon, there's something here for everyone.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enlike I don't think I've ever actually uh admitted that here on this channel but uh yeah I hate them hello welcome back to the house of Valentina I'm Valentina and today we are going to be talking about seven things I always do always when I'm working on a room and I want the room to look more expensive I want it to give it a more luxury kind of feel these are things that I I've realized over the years as a designer when I go into a room these are the things that I immediately start with and so I hope it'll just get you super inspired and really pumped I've been redoing a lot of rooms around my own house using these exact same tips I've really sorted to hone in when I go into a client's home and I just know like these are the things that I'm really gonna get my bang for buck out of those things that I can put a little bit of elbow grease into and really get the results out of the room so I hope you'll love today's video I know I am feeling super inspired just from having thought about these tips and tricks but either way way I hope you will hit subscribe give the video a big thumbs up if you're like me and you just love a room that just feels luxurious and it feels comfortable and approachable and just has that sort of pamperingness to it if you are like me make sure you do give it a big Thumbs Up And subscribe and let's jump in okay the first thing that I do is that I paint I paint I I I don't say that often enough on this channel we get a lot of times in the decor we talk a lot about uh you know switching up the pillows and we talk about a lot of the little things here pretty often on this channel but the truth is is that I never start a room without painting at first I don't know that I've ever done any space and not painted it most rooms need Paint unless you just had it painted and you just bought the house and the color happens to be exactly what you want a lot of times when you're redoing a room you need to be painting it you need to Prime the walls you need to prep them you need to fill it all the holes and the cracks and you need to paint that puppy Okay because the room is going to be transformed even if the paint is a few years old I know a lot of people get cranky when they've painted the room and it was seven to ten years ago and they thought they'd paint it once and be done for life it's it really paint doesn't last that long usually it really does get quite dingy so whether the color is one that you just don't care for or it's getting quite old or maybe you just need to go for something that's more more dramatic than what's there I think all of these are really good reasons to consider painting your room so I would think about the color palette of the room I think about the Furnishings that you're going to be putting into it what's the palette you guys know if you've downloaded my colors of the year if not I'll leave it linked down below for you again here and a link to the video where we kind of unpacked it and talked about it but let's say you're going to do light on the walls you want to go with a white color on the walls and you're going to go with dark Furniture you're going to be creating contrast right or you could go with dark walls and dark furniture and you create this really cozy kind of feel or you go light with light right you get to play with it you can decide what you want but ultimately the paint on the wall makes a huge difference and while you're painting the walls you may want to go ahead and paint the doors paint the trim and really get that room feeling fresh and new today I'm so excited to be sharing our video sponsor for today which is Harry's you guys know I am so passionate about Harry's having beautiful everyday items really does create a very luxurious feel in your home I think also when you use items like Harry's you're also going to feel the luxury I'm one of the ogs of Harry's I became an instant fan the minute I used my Harry's razor I mean it's been almost 10 years I never went back I never tried anything else it is just amazing the blades are made in a German Factory that have been making blades for over a hundred years they give you factory direct pricing on their blades I love the fact that the blades are replaceable I love the fact that literally it's super easy to switch out the blade it's super easy gives the cleanest shave I've ever experienced it's absolutely incredible you can get these in lots of different colors you can get them in the Chrome like I have I leave mine sitting out on my tongue because it matches my decor and it feels like a luxury every day because it feels so good on my legs they also have the amazing foaming shaving gel as well I have gotten every family member hooked on Harry's I've gotten my kids hooked on them I've got my kids friends hooked on them I everyone that tries these loves them they everyone is hooked it really is just that big of a deal so if you click my link down below uh it'll only be five dollars for the starter set that will give you the brand new razor it's gonna give you the Shaving gel and the little cover for travel it comes in this really cute little packaging and it's going to get you started for only five bucks it's a 13 value so it's gonna save you a bunch of money and you are going to want to kiss me on the lips after this because I'm telling you it is that life-altering and you're gonna love it so check out my link down below and remember your everyday items can be luxuries as well and these things make a huge difference and they're little things you can change out in your home that make a big difference the next thing I do and I do not talk about this enough but it is a huge thing that really does need to be done and that is addressing the floors because I change out the floors in almost every project I ever do sometimes the flooring is nice and we can get away with just putting down a really nice big area rug I suggest going for the biggest rug you can fit into the space go with the one that feels the most lustrous I love them when they feel like they've got silk running through them I talk about the one here in this room all the time because I am a fanatic I have it in three places in my house and I love this rug but Crate and Barrel has a version of this just recently I feel like I'm like are they watching our Channel I think sometimes they do they just came out with one that's very similar to this so did West Elm and so did Pottery Barn so you've got a lot of options that you can choose from and I'll leave fine linked up as well lots of options to choose from go with something that has a little bit of that sort of silkiness to it and it will immediately Elevate the space however if you do not have nice flooring you may need to consider switching out your flooring you may actually be in the market to switch out the hardwood floor doors in your space if you've got some hardwood floors that are dingy or old or you've got tiles that are broken if they've got the large grout you know that those are things I just hate living with and I'm so quick to want to change those out there's a lot of reasons why you're going to rip out the old floor or refinish it but either way updating the flooring makes a huge difference it really does whether you're going to lay down a reclaimed wood floor or if you want to lay down a tile just depends on where you are what's going to be the most appropriate flooring for you either way switching out your flooring can completely transform a space and it's worth saving up for I know it took me a long time I saved up for a long time to do my main floor and then I saved up even longer and eventually did the upstairs I removed all of that wall-to-wall carpet that was in this house and it has had such a transformative effect on this house and I've seen it in so many of my clients homes it is worth it you will see a massive change for that next thing that I do is I bring in the light I you cannot just unless you're going for a cinema room or a like a cozy Family TV room right there are really no other options that feel good literally just being in the dark maybe your closet you can get over there but generally speaking there's no other room of the house that you wouldn't want to bring all the light into so there's a lot of things to think about when you think about the light I've talked a lot on this channel about taking down plantation shutters which I know upsets people who spent a lot of money on them I'm sorry I don't like them I take them down they block out half the light even when they're open because there's so much covering the window blinds I generally just take down all of those I know it's unpopular it's an unpopular thing but there you go I've said it I'm saying it again but there are other things to consider a lot of times when we go into a home the seals are broken on the windows and they're fogged up Windows like that need to be replaced because you really do need to consider that your windows could be the culprit here if you've got really old windows if the seals are broken on them sometimes you can paint them and still get them into really great working order but a lot of times you just need to replace them the other thing that a lot of times people don't think about is that if you've got a really heavy wooded lot or you've got a lot of shade from like bushes and things outside the windows all of that also blocks the light out of your space so you may want to think about just trimming back some trees we've done that with our own home and trimmed trees off the front of the house other people a lot of times will have really big bushes outside their windows and it's they're coming up over the window and it's blocking out part of the light little things like this will make a huge difference in your space because letting that light in just lets you really see the space that light is just money it's just money I can't tell you why exactly it is but light is money and when a space feels well lit it will immediately Elevate the way the entire space feels the next thing that I always do when I am re-doing a room is that I up size the furniture I try to use as large a Furniture as I can that feels comfortable in the space so a lot of times people actually want to squeeze something bigger into a room right when we did Dr ferris's bedroom uh sometimes people have these little tiny rooms they want to put King beds in them a queen bed was the perfect size for that guest bedroom if we try to squeeze a king then in there it'd have been too much however sometimes people do the opposite they'll just put a twin bed or Worse they'll put bunk beds oh I I'm sorry I don't know if I've ever actually expressed that I hate bunk beds like I don't think I've ever actually uh admitted that here on this channel but uh yeah I hate them I absolutely hate them they freak me out I'm always scared someone's gonna die uh yeah it's not my thing uh so anyways I would not do that I think putting the queen bed into a room or if you've got a room that can hold a king and you can still get your nightstands in that's what I'm going to do when it comes to a living room I'm going to up size sofas I'm going to use the the length of the room I'm gonna really use the width I'm gonna buy a really big coffee table if you've got space for a 12 person table don't try to put an eight person table in the room go ahead and use the space you want to reserve walkways at least 35 inches for you to be able to walk at the perimeter of the room and through the walkways so that you can walk comfortably through them but for sure upsizing all of your pieces will really have a dramatic effect I honestly sometimes I get a little bit frustrated with myself because I'm like why don't I bring this up more often why do we not talk about this I every time I go to do a room I always address the lighting always it starts with the light switches it starts with the outlets we're not going to plug in a brand new you know thousand dollar lamp into a broken Outlet or one that is no longer it may not even it the electrical work itself may be outdated it I would never do that I I would never do that I would always change out the electrical I always do that so when you're going to address the lighting for the room start with the electrical that's already there look at your light switches it may be time to update them I love the little causal ones that you can put on your app with your phone and you can adjust the dim you can dim your lights with them you can have them programmed same for the outlets you can do the same kind of outlets with those I think that those changes are huge and I always do that in a room when I'm making over it or making it over I can't talk today but you know what I mean then then I'm going to address the lighting that does already actually exist in the room and I'm going to ask myself this question does the lighting in the room the way it's been put into this room serve the room best yes one of the biggest things that I like to change is the chandelier if the room doesn't have a chandelier why not add one why not add a really amazing Center light into a space that doesn't have one you might just be able to switch out what you've got and upgrade those go to Amazon but either way think a little bit more in depth about your lighting and then you may also want to add in some low light into the space as well some table lights some table lamps or some floor lamps you might need to just that lighting oh picture lights yeah lighting really does make a space feel Ultra luxurious and this will transform the way the space feels when you're sitting in it and you're actually living in it one final one today and it is one that it is just it's a trick of the trade and it just works it just works and that is adding mirrors mirrors are magic they are literally magic they have a way of bouncing light into the space I literally just did this in my own bedroom I I fought it because RH does that trip where they put the mirrors over the nightstands and I was like oh I don't wanna I wanna be more creative come up with my own thing and I'm like you know what putting the mirrors over the nightstands just works I've got a dark wall the room is pretty dark anyways because it never gets natural light I gave a full tour of the space already on an Amazon live if you want to see it I'll leave that down below as well but but the mirrors made a huge difference because it bounces the light back in the space and it immediately makes the space feel a lot bigger so why not why not take them as high up to the ceiling as you possibly can why not take in your bathroom go with a bigger mirror go for all if you've got a wall that's really dark instead of adding I don't know family photos to it I know I'm gonna get myself into trouble yeah I'm getting feisty oh so evil oh evil app almost came out hahaha okay instead of adding family photos to the wall that's really dark why not put some mirrors up put some ears think about those old dining rooms do you remember when they used to put the wall of mirror into the dining room you know that wasn't the worst idea actually ever a lot of people rip those out and instead they gave themselves a really dark wall well if you wanted the room to feel Cozier that could be a good trick but you could still frame those out or go for high impact and have several large mirrors on a wall you can have them really big ones that fill the wall you could double stack them you've got a lot of options and mirrors really do just add so much light they add a feeling of that it's almost like the room just sort of glistens it's almost like a diamond in your in your ring and it just sort of glistens it just has that effect mirrors are just really effective they're a good tool to use and I've just really just started to use them a lot more because I really do think that they really help the space just feel alive feel really luxurious and I think that it's actually pretty inexpensive a lot of times the ones I put into my bedroom are off of Amazon so I've got some from Ikea as another good source if you're trying to save money and then if you want to spend a little bit more you can go to places like Paragould and buy mirrors that have a lot of really great detail work and they have that extra something to them but either way these are all things that will completely transform your space and if you do these things you're going to see the effect you're going to feel it you're going to see it and it's going to change the way your entire space feels and the way you feel when you sit inside of it I am going to sip my coffee get back to my desk I can't wait I love it I love it I love it so check out all the links down below if you haven't checked those out already I'll have as much linked up as I can but thank you so much for joining me cheers you guys I will see you in the next one bye okay foreignlike I don't think I've ever actually uh admitted that here on this channel but uh yeah I to see it I'll leave that down below as well but but the mirrors made a huge difference because it bounces the light back in the space and it immediately makes the space feel a lot bigger so why not why not take them as high up to the ceiling as you possibly can why not take in your bathroom go with a bigger mirror go for all if you've got a wall that's really dark instead of adding I don't know family photos to it I know I'm gonna get myself into trouble yeah I'm getting feisty oh so evil oh evil app almost came out hahaha okay instead of adding family photos to the wall that's really dark why not put some mirrors up put some ears think about those old dining rooms do you remember when they used to put the wall of mirror into the dining room you know that wasn't the worst idea actually ever a lot of people rip those out and instead they gave themselves a really dark wall well if you wanted the room to feel Cozier that could be a good trick but you could still frame those out or go for high impact and have several large mirrors on a wall you can have them really big ones that fill the wall you could double stack them you've got a lot of options and mirrors really do just add so much light they add a feeling of that it's almost like the room just sort of glistens it's almost like a diamond in your in your ring and it just sort of glistens it just has that effect mirrors are just really effective they're a good tool to use and I've just really just started to use them a lot more because I really do think that they really help the space just feel alive feel really luxurious and I think that it's actually pretty inexpensive a lot of times the ones I put into my bedroom are off of Amazon so I've got some from Ikea as another good source if you're trying to save money and then if you want to spend a little bit more you can go to places like Paragould and buy mirrors that have a lot of really great detail work and they have that extra something to them but either way these are all things that will completely transform your space and if you do these things you're going to see the effect you're going to feel it you're going to see it and it's going to change the way your entire space feels and the way you feel when you sit inside of it I am going to sip my coffee get back to my desk I can't wait I love it I love it I love it so check out all the links down below if you haven't checked those out already I'll have as much linked up as I can but thank you so much for joining me cheers you guys I will see you in the next one bye okay foreign\n"
