Driving the All-New 2019 Nissan Altima: A Comprehensive Review
As I step into the driver's seat of the all-new 2019 Nissan Altima, I'm excited to put this new vehicle through its paces and see what makes it stand out from the competition. This is the first year for the sixth generation model, and there's a lot that's new about it. The Altima has two new engines, one of which is an industry-first variable compression turbocharged engine that I'll dive into later.
The Altima's chassis is also all-new, and this vehicle comes equipped with a plethora of new technology features. One notable feature is the availability of all-wheel drive on every trim level, making it the first all-wheel drive Nissan sedan in the US market. This is a big deal for a segment that often prioritizes fuel efficiency over traction.
As I take the Altima out for a spin on Route 33 in beautiful Ojai, California, I'm eager to test its dynamics and see how it performs on both the highway and in the city. The Altima has some tough competition in the midsize family sedan market, with cars like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord vying for attention.
Under the hood, the Altima boasts an industry-first VC turbo engine that can range from an 8:1 to a 14:1 compression ratio. This allows the engine to produce both more power and better efficiency, making it a unique selling point in the market. With this engine, the Altima makes 248 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque while achieving an impressive 34 miles per gallon on the highway.
While not as high-performance as some luxury vehicles, the Altima's VC turbo engine is more than capable of delivering strong acceleration and handling both twisty roads and long highway stretches. The ride is smooth and comfortable, making this vehicle happy to eat up miles on road trips. However, I do notice that the steering can be a bit soft in tight corners – it's clear that this Altima isn't a sports sedan, but rather a practical family car with a focus on comfort.
The interior of the Altima is where things get really interesting. The exterior may not be as flashy as some other midsize sedans, but step inside and you'll find yourself surrounded by premium materials and a very inviting atmosphere. Every 2019 Altima comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen mounted to the dashboard like a tablet. This system is fairly intuitive and comes equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
In addition to its tech features, the Altima also boasts a range of driver assistance systems that are becoming increasingly common in modern vehicles. These include forward collision warning and front automatic emergency braking, as well as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors, intelligent Lane intervention, and Nissan's Pro Pilot assistive technology. While Pro Pilot is not quite autonomous driving, it can help you stay on course and keep a safe distance from the car in front of you.
One notable feature of Pro Pilot is its ability to bring the vehicle to a complete stop without assistance – although don't get too comfortable behind the wheel; this doesn't mean you can take a nap! Rather, it's a useful safety feature that lets you keep your hands on the wheel while still having some advanced technology backing you up. Overall, the Altima is a very competitive sedan in an increasingly crowded market, with its great new drivetrain and ton of tech features making it a must-consider for anyone looking for a practical family car.
Overall, the 2019 Nissan Altima is a solid contender in the midsize family sedan market. With its impressive fuel economy, comfortable ride, and advanced safety features, this vehicle has something to offer every driver. While not as high-performance as some other vehicles, it's clear that the Altima is designed with practicality and comfort in mind – making it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable family car.

drive car when you stab the gas pedal it deliver strong acceleration and it's also a perfectly comfortable and quiet Cruiser on the highway the ride is smooth and the seats are comfortable making the Altima happy to eat up miles on any road trip you can challenge it with but when you're on twisty roads the Altima is equally happy to hustle the coroner's steering is a little soft but remember you're in an Ultima not a German sports sedan the new Altima is pretty generous with driver assistance features as well forward collision warning and front automatic emergency braking are standard on every 2019 Altima and as you work your way up the model range you can get adaptive cruise control blind spot monitoring parking sensors intelligent Lane intervention and Nissan's pro pilot assistive technology pro pilot assist isn't quite autonomous driving but it can help you stay in your lane and keep a safe distance from the car in front of you while driving on the highway it can even come to a complete stop for you and continue moving when the traffic gets going again it's no replacement for attentive driving and it doesn't mean you can take a nap behind the wheel but pro pilot assist is a very nice safety and convenience feature to have at the end of the day the new Altima is a very competitive sedan in an increasingly competitive market with a great new drivetrain available
