As I approach the end of 2023, I find myself excited to share with you my December TBR list. This month marks the final bookish challenge for me, and I'm eager to dive into some new titles that have been on my radar. My first stop is a beloved classic, "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. With over 1 million copies sold, this timeless tale has captured the hearts of readers worldwide. I've heard so many wonderful things about this story, and I'm looking forward to finally getting to it.
But "A Christmas Carol" isn't my only read for the month. I also have a sequel that's been waiting patiently on my shelf - Christopher Moore's "The Serpent of Fenet". This series is described as hilarious, charming, full of thieves and cunning, and I'm drawn to its unique blend of humor and adventure. The first book in the series, "Fool", reimagines Shakespeare's classic "King Lear" with a modern twist, infusing it with profanity and vulgarity that promises to be both outrageous and witty. As someone who loves Shakespeare reimaginings, I'm excited to dive into this series and experience its brand of absurd humor.
For a palate cleanser, I've chosen a book that's sure to catch me by surprise - "16 Ways to Defend Against a Wall City" by KJ Parker. This fantasy novel has been touted as strange and intriguing, with a unique narrative style that promises to be both captivating and confounding. The story follows the protagonist Oron, a liar and cheat who's not exactly cut out for heroics, but may just hold the key to saving his besieged city from certain doom. With its blend of history and documentation, this book seems like a true original - one that I'm eager to explore.
Next up is another middle-grade title that promises to be both quirky and charming - "The Mysterious Benedict Society" by Trenton Lee Stewart. This series has been around for a long time, but I've heard so many great things about it that I'm excited to reencounter it once again. The story begins with an ad that invites children to take a series of mind-bending tests, and only four special kids manage to pass. From there, they embark on a quest to save the day in some way - it's a promise that this book delivers on in spades.
Finally, for my December TBR list, I've chosen a short story collection by Ling Ma, titled "Bliss Montage". This promises to be a wild and wonderful ride, with eight tales that explore everyday fears and fantasies. One of the stories follows a woman who lives in a house with her husband and all of his ex-boyfriends - it's a concept that seems both strange and intriguing. With Ling Ma's excellent writing style on display, I'm expecting a truly unique reading experience - one that might just become a new favorite. After hearing rave reviews for her previous book, "Severance", I'm excited to dive into this collection of tales and see what wonders it holds.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys it's Reagan and welcome back to another video today's video is going to be my December TBR that's right we have finally reached the final TBR of 2023 and honestly I'm not sure how I feel about it I haven't really taken enough time to like Ponder my favorite books of the year but I do feel this like pressure and stress to try to fit in as many Fantastic books I can before the end of 2023 I definitely have some favorites from this past year but I do feel like there's still room on my list so with that in mind I have constructed hopefully a winner of a TBR and I would describe my reading mood at the moment as either wanting to read something epic huge and Grand or something really weird so I feel like that TBR sort of reflects that interesting head space I'm in without further Ado let's go ahead and dive into my December TBR the first book that's on my TBR is a book I'm actually currently in the midst of reading and that is he who drowned the World by Shelley Parker Chan I'm about 100 pages into this book and spoiler alert I am loving it oh so much this was a book that was definitely a priority read for me before the end of the year as it's a sequel to one of my favorite books the first book in the duology which is she who became the son this book is set in 14th century China and we read from a variety of perspectives all surrounding a rebellion happening in China at the time all of the players in this book are all like important impactful like military individuals as well the first character we're introduced to is zoo and we follow her from a young age after the tragic past of her family she basically takes on the identity of her brother enters a monastery to gain education and then begins to work her way up the ranks of a rebellion Army we follow the enemy General who's been biting his time to get revenge for his family and we follow a few other characters as well such interesting character Dynamics lots of queer identity and the military strategy combined with fantastic writing I just love this series so much the first 100 Pages have been so intense and just immediately reminded me that chel Parker Chan is it they are just so talented and needless to say this is the book at the top of my TBR for this month I plan to finish it very very soon the next book that's on my TBR is actually my IRL book club book pick so I definitely need to get to it very very soon as my book club meeting is coming up uh right around the corner some might say and that is shark card by Emily haboc this book squarely fits into the weird category but I also have a feeling this book is going to be lyrical and beautiful and kind of touch on some very interesting questions that I feel like will make for both good discussion at book club and just an enjoyable reading experience but this book centers a newlywed couple but their first year of marriage will also be their last because shortly after these two characters get married the husband receives a very rare diagnosis where in which he will retain his memories his thoughts his feelings but he will also slowly transform into a great white shark and as this process begins to take place and the husband begins to take on some like ious predatory uh traits as well obviously their marriage begins to get very complicated and we also begin to explore the psyches of both of these two main characters obviously the concept of this is very very weird but I also feel like this combined with what is clearly going to be a very emotional story it could be an interesting one so yes uh I need to get to this book very very soon we're meeting soon and I'm hoping I'm going to like this I feel like this is a book that wasn't really on my radar but when we selected it via our Democrat IC vote I was intrigued by it I mean husband turning into shark it's very much like would you still love me if I was a worm so we shall see this is another book that's on my TBR next up is another book that I have been halfway through for quite some time and that is fool's Quest by Robin hob I have been running away from the emotional weight of this story for months I loved the first half I loved the first installment of this final Trilogy I've just been ducking away from what I know is a story that's going to emotionally upend me me in every way shape and form and it's both this book and the final installment that being said though I really want to read this book this month because I love the first one so much and I really want to have a perspective on the series with the first two books at least read before the end of the year but this is the final Trilogy within Robin hobb's Universe Robin hob being one of my all-time favorite if not my favorite fantasy writer out there the journey I've gone on across all of her characters in her world but in particular the fits in the full story which we are following once again in this final Trilogy one final quest with two of my favorite characters of all time and it is not an easy story to read at all I am unwell reading these books to put it simply I also just love Robin hobb's contemplations and exploration of the trauma being the chosen one in a fantasy setting and story with Fitz I feel like I grew up with Fitz even though I definitely did it but Fitz in and itself is just one of the characters that lives most closely in my heart and I am just I need to finish this book I don't want to but I got to and I know it's going to be fantastic next on my list is a few different sci-fi books I'm deciding between there's something about like an epic sci-fi Adventure that's definitely calling out to me I also feel like the world and political conversations that often happen in sci-fi books is something I'm also really really craving the first sci-fi option is ancillary Justice by Ann Ley this is the first book to a highly beloved Trilogy that I have just heard endless amounts of fantastic things about so I feel like I really need to get to it and start this series but in this book we're following our main character who is out for Revenge she is currently on a remote and icy planet and she is one step closer for completing her Mission once she was the justice of Toren a large Starship that used artificial intelligence to link the consciousness of thousands of soldiers across the Galaxy but after one act of treachery everything was ripped away and again she's on a quest for Revenge I feel like I'm going to love this book and I really want to get to it soon I feel like it's going to have lots of interesting topics and discussion points so this is definitely one that I am considering in terms of picking up this month next one is another first book to a beloved series and that is Children of time by Adrien chaikovsky and the synopsis of this book Goes The Last Remnant of the human race is leaving a dying Earth desperate to find a new home following their ancestors like starm Maps they stumble upon a lost Eden of a planet terraformed and prepared to take on human life and to start a new and fresh a new civilization if you will but this planet is not unoccupied and the new masters of this place are not going to let these new people settle in this is said to be a clash of two civilizations both desperately fighting for this location this sounds incredibly intense uh again I've heard fantastic things about this author this series this is a very beloved writer whom I've never read anything from so I'm just really intrigued and excited about the prospect of starting the series too and then lastly and probably most logically I also have babylon's ashes by James ESS Corey yes I do feel like reading these sixth book of a Sci-Fi series I have been reading over the course of a couple years probably makes a lot more sense than starting uh possibly two new Sci-Fi series but at the same time I never really tend to make a lot of sense especially when it comes to continuing series I have started so it's really going to come down to which one calls out to me the most but yes the sixth book of the expans series is also on my TBR I really like this series it really combines lots of Great Character moments and action it really has ballooned the plot in really wild directions over the course of this entire series the fifth one which was probably my favorite book of the series so far really left me intrigued to continue on and see what is going to happen next but the basis of this book is it's set in a solar system where in which there are governments on Earth Mars and a series of space stations called the belt all of these places do not like each other very much and there's been a lot of tension in the solar system for a long time like War has been brewing and one of the Sparks that sort of creates conflict is our main character James Holden and his crew stumble upon a piece of ancient alien technology and all heck sort of Breaks Loose from there but again The Story Goes in lots of different directions there's lots of action there's it's a very intense series to say the least um and I'm on book six and I really should continue on before I start forgetting things which is prone to happen soon at the rate I'm going in terms of reading this series the next book that's on my TBR is another first book but this time to a fantasy series and that is the emperor's blade by Brian stavy I've been wanting to read this book all year but I've kind of got distracted and pulled into directions of other fantasy series that I ended up reading but I feel like if I can at least get to the first book of this series I can carry on reading many more of Brian stav's books into 2024 but this is a book that seems very politically leaning and also just very chaotic in all the ways I enjoy so much but this book centers our main characters who are all the Emperor's Children and at the beginning of this book the EMP Emperor is killed off and what appears to be some type of political coup and we follow the children who are all in like very different locations the first is the son of the emperor has been training to be an elite soldier to help protect his brother but he is very far away and while he wants to come back as quickly as possible to help protect the air he's kind of pulled into a very dangerous situation um with the military that he is surrounded by we follow the daughter of the Emperor who is in the capital city and she is trying to investigate her father's death and will do anything to solve what happened and lastly we follow the heir of the throne who has been training in a very remote Monastery for a very long time and at the beginning of the book a variety of political players come to collect him but can he trust them this book just sounds really intense and I also like that the entirety of the plot is sort of happening in the shadow of this huge and tumultuous sort of political moment and I'm curious to see how that's going to impact all of these characters and their relationships with each other again this is book one to I believe a series there's even a spin-off series if I am recalling correctly I've heard great things about this so I want to check it out this month hopefully and then the last collection of books I would say are all of my remaining weird books if you will the first book Is before the coffee gets cold by toshik Kazu kawaguchi and this book is super popular and it's often described as both odd but very very heartwarming which I feel like could be a good story to sort of break up some of my more intense reads for this month but this book is set in a coffee shop in a back alley in Tokyo and local Legend says if you go here you have possibly the opportunity to travel back in time and in this story we follow four characters over the course of one summer who visit this coffee shop who all have this desire to go back and change something but they all realize that going back in time is not as simple as it sounds again this just sounds peculiar and strange and Charming I also believe this is a series as well and this book has over 1 million copies sold so again this is a very beloved story and I'm really looking forward to finally getting to it this month as I feel like I could really love it next up I actually have a sequel but I also bought the first book which is on its way to me and that is the serpent of fenet by Christopher Moore this series is described as like hilarious Charming full of Thieves and cunning and that sort of combination of story is one I personally really enjoy but the first book which is called Fool by Christopher Moore is like an outrageous witty reinterpretation of the Shakespeare and classic King Lear they said to take this particular well-known story and bring it to new places of like profanity and vulgarity I have heard really great things about this series I've never read anything by Christopher Moore I love a Shakespeare reimagining just in general and this seems like a very absurd and funny series to check out again I was thinking perhaps a palette cleanser or just something that sort of catched me by surprise I'm looking for something sort of weird and funny and strange and I feel like this series by Christopher Moore could be perfect for that I also have 16 ways to to defend a wall City by KJ Parker this is another book that just seems very strange but this is actually a fantasy story and part of the strangeness of this book is like one yes like what it's about but more so the character and I believe how the story is told to us and this story follows our main character oron and he lives in a city that is under siege and the enemy has basically come and is determined to kill everyone in and around the city it will take a miracle to save not only the city but everyone inside enter our main character oron who is liar a cheat and has a very serious problem with authority he is not a soldier but in fact an engineer of bridges but he possibly could be the answer to this problem this is also written and recorded I believe as a history a documentation a reflection of this great moment in time and it just seems really strange if I'm being quite honest it's also a another first book to a series and I'm just really curious about this one I love the concept and I'm hoping the writing style is really unique as well next up I have the mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart another sort of pallet cleanser leaning weird and Charming story I love middle grade I love stories that kind of have a lot of Quirk and adventure and sort of saving the day and this appears to definitely be that I read this book as a kid but transparently I feel like I have forgotten everything about it so I'm excited to reencounter it once again but the first book in this series opens with a very peculiar ad placed in the paper invites children to come to take a series of very difficult and mindbending tests and only four very special very intelligent children actually pass and from there they basically have to go on an Quest an adventure to save the day in some sort of capacity again this book seems quirky and strange in all of the best ways middle grade can be it's a belov series this is a series that's been around for a very long time so I feel like it's going to be a Charming good time and again a perfect book to sort of break up some of the more intense reads I'm getting to this month and then lastly for my December TBR are I have a collection of short stories and that is bliss montage by Ling ma my plan with this is to kind of read a story here and there over the course of the month but I also might just sort of Breeze through this book because it sounds strange in all of the best ways possible in this short Story collection Ling ma says bring together eight wildly different tales that take on everyday fears and Fantasies one is a woman who lives in a house with her husband and all of her ex-boyfriends to an ancient folk ritual that will heal you of anything if you bury yourself alive again this seems to be a very peculiar collection of wild Concepts that have a similar thematic thread throughout all of them I've heard excellent things about Ling Ma's writing in general they also released a book called Severance which was reached with high praise and reviews so yes I picked this up recently I've been dying to read it ever since I grabbed it it just sounds like such a strange experience that I feel like might be like a new favorite if I'm being honest hey guys that is my December TBR my final TBR of 2023 I still cannot believe I'm saying that sentence please let out some books you hope to get to before the end of the year as I would love to know and I hope you guys enjoyed this video and I will see you soon with another one soon goodbyehi guys it's Reagan and welcome
