HP Slate 500 Hands On

**Introduction to the HP Slate 500**

We are currently at the Intel booth here at CES 2011, and I'm John from TechnoBuffalo. My colleague, Mik Sha, who is the product manager for internal marketing, has brought over the HP Slate 500 to show us some of its features. This device is running on Windows 7 Professional Edition, and as you can see, it's a sleek 8.9-inch tablet with a front-facing camera and a back-facing camera.

**Device Specifications**

The HP Slate 500 comes equipped with an Intel Atom processor code-named Meno, which has integrated graphics. It also features 2 GB of memory and a 60 GB hard drive. What's impressive is that it can play full 1080p video playback without any issues, even when running local radio playback. Additionally, consumers will have access to the Windows Store to download a variety of applications, many of which are touch-enabled.

**Multi-Touch Capabilities**

Mik Sha would like to show us a demonstration of multi-touch capabilities on this device. He has brought up another application, the Amazon Kindle for PC, which is an e-reading application. As you can see, while it's loading up, the device responds to multitouch input, and it also supports landscape mode. For text entry, it uses Windows 7's default soft keyboard, which is a full-size keyboard that appears on screen when needed.

**Performance and Responsiveness**

The HP Slate 500 is a capacitive touch screen device, which means it responds quickly and accurately to user input. Mik Sha would like to demonstrate this by showing us how responsive the device is to touch screen interaction. He's also shown us that the device comes with an accelerometer, although it's currently disabled for demonstration purposes.

**Software and Browsers**

Mik Sha has demonstrated the HP Slate 500 running Internet Explorer, a web browser on Windows devices. However, he notes that this isn't the best experience, as it doesn't take full advantage of the multi-touch capabilities of the device. There are also other multitouch browsers available for Windows, which would provide a better user experience.

**Hardware Features**

In addition to its software features, the HP Slate 500 comes with several hardware components. These include a docking station for connecting external devices such as keyboards and mice, a full-size SD card slot, 16 GB of internal storage, and an option for a 6 GB hard drive. The device also has a power connector, a 3.5mm headset jack, and one USB port for connectivity to additional devices.

**Conclusion**

The HP Slate 500 is an interesting tablet device that offers a range of features and capabilities. While it may not be the most powerful or feature-rich device on the market, it's definitely worth considering for those looking for a Windows-based tablet experience. With its multi-touch interface, wide range of software applications available through the Windows Store, and robust hardware components, this device has something to offer for anyone in the market for a new tablet.
