Huawei P9 - Hands On Review

The Koala T Nine: A Game-Changing Smartphone with Co-Engineered Leica Lenses

You're probably looking at this a little bit confused because you can see I have a brand at the top of my smartphone. And that's not a regular camera, it's because this is the Koala T Nine and it's co-engineered with Leica. These two lenses at the top here are certified lenses, and that's what makes this smartphone going to change smartphone photography forever.

The Koala T Nine is a super slim Android smartphone, measuring just 6.9 millimeters in thickness. It has a 5.2-inch 1080p screen, but really it's all about the camera. You have two lenses on the rear here - one shooting color and the other one shoots in black and white. This is to ensure that you get better color correction, get better saturation of color, and use low light much more effectively. The hybrid flash unit on the back has three different stages, which again enhances low-light photography.

If you're familiar with another smartphone's camera app, you'll feel pretty at home with this one as well. It uses exactly the same icons and pumps on its own camera operating systems. To get into the various different modes, it's just a left and right swipe. All of these modes even have their own filters to enhance colors or smooth them out the light.

The Koala T Nine has been working pretty hard behind it to achieve this level of photography expertise. It also has a dedicated DSP and ISP for enhanced photography again. There's a wide variety of modes here, including manual mode. This is where things get really interesting, as we can see that they've made an effort with the manual mode going away from the system to restore on the Mate.

What else do those dual camera lenses do? They allow you to refocus with that familiar both-the-effect so your take a picture and you'll be able to adjust the focus on the screen of different points. You probably saw something like this before, but it really is very robust on the Koala T Nine. You can see here, you'll focus in on one particular area and there's a sliding scale which opens up or closes down the aperture so you can really fine-tune how much blur there is.

This is also available only because there are two cameras on the rear of the Koala T Nine. The result is that after shooting bokeh effects are much more accessible, as they would be in professional photography. This level of control and flexibility has made it one of the easiest and most adjustable applications we've seen so far.

The Koala T Nine also has a fingerprint sensor - the same one used on Beam 88, which means it works when it's a little bit damp. It also has a four-layer level of security, which is more secure than what we've seen before. This smartphone is paired with another model called the T9 Plus, which is slightly larger and has the same slim body. The result is that you get even more value for money.

The battery life of this phone has been praised as it's capable of lasting a day under heavy use. That is a big bonus on something as slim as the Koala T Nine.

There is no launch date for this smartphone in the US yet, but Digital Trends will be reviewing it very soon to give you an even better idea of what to expect from this new model.
