**The Life-Changing Quote that Inspired a Super Car Enthusiast**
I know Leonardo well; he read this quote that he credited with altering the course of his entire life. Art in science - disciplines that must walk together, hand in hand. I also have a quote like that that I credit for altering my entire life. It's when my dad said nothing as he somehow silently packed up all of his belongings and left in the middle of the night while the rest of us were sleeping.
**The Genius Behind Pagani**
All of Pagani's work was centered around mixing the forms of beautiful art with the function of great engineering. Perhaps no car better illustrates this than Horacio's long-awaited Zonda follow-up, the Huayra. The wire was named and designed, once again taking inspiration from the wind - just like all my favorite jokes! The car is named after Huayra Tata, a wind God in South America.
**The Huayra: A Masterpiece of Engineering**
Horacio wanted the Huayra to look as though sculpted by the wind. The freakin' rearview mirrors are modeled after a woman's eyes - this dude has become an Italian! The Huayra would again be powered by AMG, but this engine would actually be the same displacement as the original Zonda C12, powered by a six-litre twin-turbo V12 making 720 horses.
**The Innovative Use of Active Aerodynamics**
Completely new for the Huayra was the use of active aerodynamics. Meaning the car's aerodynamic quality has changed depending on what the car needs. The wire ECU will monitor each wheel, and if it senses that one side of the car has less traction than the other, the winglets on that side will engage, providing more traction for those wheels.
**The Huayra: A High-Speed Machine**
Just like on a freaking airplane, with the engine and advanced Aero working together, the Huayra can achieve a top speed of 238 miles per hour. Imagine that for a second - you're cruising down the freeway at 70 miles per hour; you're covering 110 feet per second. At 238 miles per hour, you cover more than a football field in the same amount of time.
**The Huayra's World Debut and Limited Production**
The Huayra made its world debut at Geneva in 2011, the same show as the Zonda just 12 years before. Pagani announced they would only make 100 Huayras with an estimated price tag of $1.4 million - that's only a little bit more than I make per episode of Up to Speed.
**The Track-Focused Huayra BC**
In 2015, Pagani announced that all the Huayras had been sold out, but as luck would have it, a new Huayra was on the way. The Huayra BC, which is right there - it's the track-focused Huayra. It's got stripped-down interior, a new titanium exhaust system, and it's even more rigid than the old wire.
**The One-Off Pagani Huayra Roadster**
A year after the BC's debut, Pagani showed off the new Huayra Roadster at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. It might look like it's just a Huayra without a top, but apparently, the Roadster and the regular coupe don't share any components - which is insane.
**The Next Generation of Pagani**
So what could possibly come next for this little supercar company? I've heard from a very reliable source within Pagani that their next car is another Huayra, mixing the BC and the Roadster together. It's named the BC Roadster.

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is the story of a guy whose last name was Pagani the car looks good in photographs I absolutely love it when I Drive this is the incredible true story of the man behind the world's most unbelievable super cars this is everything you need to know to get up to speed on Pagani but our CEO Pagani was born in 1955 in a small town in Casilla Argentina his daddy worked in a bakery and his mommy was a painter oh those are happy little super cars aren't they the rural agricultural community of Kissel de is the last place you'd expect to produce one of the best automotive minds ever the Casilla way of life is centered around corned beef and soy production just like Nolan but from a young age Horacio knew he didn't want any of that as a kid he built go-karts and mini bikes with his friends and as he got older Horacio started messing around with fiberglass and became handy with this stuff I was also pretty handy with this stuff I used to sneak into my daddy's attic and eat fiberglass insulation all night you know the pink cotton candy stuff doesn't taste like cotton candy it tastes more like blood anyway when Horacio was just 21 he started working on a limited aah Santa working on a limited set to 15 a race car of his own limited ascent of Athena was a category of single seater rear-engine cars from the province of Santa Fe and part of the Cordoba in Argentina this guy didn't have any formal training in engineering and he was building a race car in his driveway but he couldn't do it full-time because he still had to pay the bills so Horacio started a business making fiberglass camper shells and used the dough to pay for his racecar and start up a team when the car was complete with handmade fiberglass era bits Horacio still needed an engine so he made a trip to Renault Argentina quarters hey my name is horacio pagani nice to meet you and I would like an entire engine for my race car thank you Renault was blown away this absolute nobody kid just showed up to their headquarters with a complete race car without the engine not only did Renault agree to give Pagani the engine he needed but they went so far as to sponsor the team for the entire season on top of that Pagani chose last season's champion to get in the driver's seat the season however was pretty tough they didn't have a ton of money to fix issues as simple as brake problems which plagued them all year but the fact that Horacio was running a race team basically on pure will alone was enough to bolster his reputation ever since he was a young kid making toy cars out of wood Horacio dreamed of returning to his parents homeland in Italy he wanted to work for sports car gods like Ferrari Lamborghini and Alfa Romeo having proven himself as a performance designer in Argentina Pagani felt he just needed to get his foot in the door imagine this is a foot and this is a door it's in through his racing connections Horacio was able to set up a meeting with one of his heroes old-school Formula One legend Juan Manuel Fangio Fangio was a five-time world champion and dominated an era when the cars were truly death machine that's a man Fangio was eager to help a fellow Argentinean achieve his dreams especially a guy with her osseous talent after their meeting Fangio had written five letters of recommendation for Pagani they were personally addressed to these five men enzo Silla founder of the asila Formula One team alejandro de tom also the guy who built the Pantera Carlo GT at Alfa Romeo Giulio Alfieri at Lamborghini and one letter to Enzo Ferrari he ever heard of them in the end Horacio got a verbal agreement with Lamborghini to work as a designer on the new project sweet so he headed home married his sweetheart sold his business and got his stuff together to move to Italy then he got a letter Lamborghini cancelled the project the LM the first luxury SUV so Horacio no longer had a job offer they think a letter will stop me ha pack your bags baby we're going Italy and off they went once there Pagani walks straight into Lamborghini he asked for a job again and again and again until finally Lamborghini gave him a job but he wouldn't be a designer instead they put him to work in the body shop it wasn't exactly what he wanted but Horacio was glad to finally be at Lamborghini after years in the body shop Horacio moved to the composite materials department Lamborghini was also experimenting with a new material that was stronger and even lighter than his beloved fiberglass carbon fiber after working in the composite Department Lamborghini decided it was finally time to let Horacio design something 1988 was approaching and automobile e Lamborghini would need a special edition to celebrate their 25th anniversary for us who had finally achieved his dream of designing for Lamborghini and it was tradition for the designer of a car to put his signature on it or as they say in Italy his John Hancock but according to her Accio son Christopher Horacio Pagani didn't get to sign the special edition Countach because an Arjun tene will never sign a Lamborghini that's we know that story cuz Nolan talked to on the phone undeterred Horacio urged Lamborghini to invest in a carbon-fiber autoclave which would let them produce tons of carbon pieces for their cars but they were like not there thinking was that since Vitaly didn't use one Lamborghini didn't need one either so Horacio went to a bank got a loan of a half million bones and bought one himself Horacio used his brand-new autoclave to make carbon fiber parts for the Countach and when the prototype was done Perot SEOs new Countach was more than a thousand pounds lighter than the production version that's insane the Countach Evoluzione was the baddest design the car his way so in 1991 he quit and you better believe he took the carbon-fiber autoclave with him he went into business making parts for the Ferrari f1 team the legendary Dallara race
