The Corvette ZR1: A Beast on Wheels

As I stepped into the cockpit of the Corvette ZR1, I was immediately struck by its impressive features and sleek design. The interior is luxurious, with comfortable seats that boast carbon fiber inserts for added support. The dashboard is wrap-around, providing a sense of grandeur, and features an illuminated switch for the seat heating and cooling functions. The 12-volt socket adds a convenient touch, while the small storage area beneath the seat provides ample space to conceal essentials.

As I explored the rear compartment, I discovered a convenient opening mechanism that allows for easy access to the storage space behind the rear seats. With two people, it's possible to lift the roof panel off without difficulty, providing ample room for luggage or other items. While this feature requires some manual effort, the benefits make up for the inconvenience.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys i'm shmee hello and welcome back to the channel where today you join me at sms design and performance in bahrain a shop where they do some pretty extraordinary projects including snow cat that i recently drove with osama it's owner out here as well now we got talking about american cars that you can't get in england and this popped up the corvette zr1 or if you're talking in american english zr1 now it's the most powerful and fastest corvette ever a car i've been quite intrigued to drive since i saw the unveiling and launch of it in dubai just over a year ago but we're out here in bahrain today and thanks to the guys i'm going to get an opportunity to show you around the car talk about all the details and then take it out for a test drive out on the roads to get an experience of what it's like then we'll come back and run through some of the tech on the interior as well so let's get started then and check out the new corvette zr1 before now i featured a number of different variants of the c7 generation of the corvette on the channel including the z06 when it launched a few years ago and i actually joined chevrolet at the 24 hours of le mans to test drive that car in the very year the c7r version was successful the winner of the gte pro class in the 24 hour race i've also more recently driven the grand sport which might not have had the 650 horsepower of the z06 but did have some of the suspension and the driving experience feel as a result now this comes in as the flagship up on top the zr1 available in this generation for the first time with an eight-speed automatic or in the case of this car with the seven speed manual gearbox but at 765 ps 755 brake horsepower with 969 newton meters of torque or 715 pounds foot from a supercharged v8 a 6.2 liter supercharged v8 all the power going to the rear wheels not to 62 miles an hour in this beast is just 2.85 seconds that's really quick and it will go to a top speed of 212 miles per hour 341 kilometers per hour now this car is specked highly and it has the low wing you could opt out the low wing or the higher wing that was shown on the launch car the low wing has less drag as a result it has a higher top speed as opposed to being more downforce for the race track but both cars have more uh downforce overall than the z06 and in fact this car has just a bit more the high wing has 400 kilos of downforce 60 percent more now to walk around and talk a bit about the design of course you'll be no doubt very familiar with the c7 generation of the corvette a very successful one it's coming towards the end of the life hence the arrival of the zr1 the flagship in the range down at the back you have this exhaust system now you can change the car through a number of different driving modes and believe me now this sounds really very good as we're going to hear later on you've got a lot of carbon fiber going on so a carbon fiber roof panel that you can actually remove and stow away inside the luggage space at the rear and then round to the front you have this carbon fiber bonnet bulge believe me when you open up the engine bay take a look under the bonnet it looks really really very cool now around the car with the ztk package you get the full extreme arrow so just look at this front splitter look at the length and width of this thing the way it sticks out you've got these small end plates around here but the length of it out front all carbon fiber all lightweight but the crazy thing is that in the us this car starts at 123 000 but packs that much punch when you think what it competes against you're getting a lot of car for the money with this 20-inch wheels which tires are we wearing here i think these are just the pilot super sports but you can also get it with the sport cup twos which would be the stickier rubber out for the track um should you prefer so this is more i guess road spec if we come around left-hand drive car just open up the door button inside here just to open it and you can see we've got our seven-speed manual gearbox carbon fiber for the steering wheel the software and the infotainment has the performance data recorder there's a head-up display the digital dashboard that you can change and customize there's a lot of technology a lot of functionality in here you can use your driver mode select to go through and change 12 different driving elements as you change between the various driving modes so there's a lot that you can configure adjust and experiment with and set up how you like it and that's one of the things i really like about american cars in general so let me just take a step inside here right now the key is actually in my pocket but it's a really cool key it's this very thin almost like a small card-like piece which is updated since i drove the z06 let me pop that back in my pocket and then put on the brake put on the clutch and start stop button let's bring it into life and that's in the quiet mode digital screen wakes up in the center if i just toggle this quickly to go to the right through the different modes up into track mode what that was just a small little touch wow that is a killer noise there are some cool features like this you've got a little stowage bucket there behind the screen you fold that down lots of the interior though familiar what we're used to from the previous models in the range but i'm looking forward to driving this we've got rev matching which you can turn on with the paddles behind getting a feel for what it's like just look at that actually let's come and have a quick look at the engine itself because it is a really really special thing um it has an eaton supercharger with 13 psi of boost but come around look at this the way it opens up towards the front leaving that carbon bonnet bulge over the supercharger there in place you can't see too much this weighs next to nothing carbon fiber you can see the raw carbon underneath maybe if i come in a touch closer you can see that a little bit better but this is quite a cool display as engines go and then just close it down i think it's closed on both sides magic so let's hop back in let's head out for a little drive and let's get a feel for what the new zr1 is like to drive because we're in bahrain doing this the normal way would be boring so we're in a mini supercar convoy we've got a 911 gt3 we've also got a subaru wrx sti and i'm going to head on out so let's just turn down the air conditioning a little bit i kept the air in the car nice and cool actually pretty decent lock right there so i'm currently in tour mode the standard driving mode you're very very light steering so like i said you can adjust everything in a really really big way in this car changing all the settings and configurations the suspension the throttle response the feel of the car so like this is is your standard driving right your everyday normal just cruising around driving mode and that's how i'm going to get started clutches uh has a good feel it's not it's not hard work but it is quite heavy just go over the bumps here watching out for that very low front splitter that we have of course on this car but just to get get driving then shift between the gears and that's got to be crappy which exhaust system by the way up into second gentle nice short throw on the shifter which is what a driving car a driver's car is supposed to be about so if we drop it down at the moment we don't have rev matching engaged so you can change that so easily in this car just with one pull of the paddle on the back i'm going to put the driving mode up into sport mode there we go get ready to pull out in a moment and there we go in sport mode then it actually has completely variable sounds out of the exhaust depending on the different driving modes so all the modes are different as opposed to just being open or closed like you would normally find in such a car so like this it drives easily gently the suspension it has the uh electric magnetic electronic suspension setup that can adjust i can't remember the exact terminology that they use on the car but nice and easy um if i go one more into track mode and pull the paddle now either side you can pull it to get rev matching drop it down to third drop it down to second you can hear it automatically matching the gears for us as of course the automatic gearbox car would do and then we have a small little stretch yes listen to that that's where this comes into its own nice yes that's a good sound all the nice the kind of backfire pop you get of it as well this is completely factory stock this car how it came out of the factory i'm liking it though i've driven well you've been with me since i started driving out from sms so if you don't like that you literally do just pull a paddle and then you get to doing it yourself active rep matching off so down from fourth to third into second but you've also got a lot of convenience features things like an electric steering wheel to shuffle that around if you want of course there's a lovely head-up display in the digital screen so i can show you more of these later on driving wise it feels fairly small of the road you've got decent visibility certainly out to the front corners and out the door mirrors that bulge on the bonnet definitely obscures a bit of your view about where the front end of the car is and given how raped the rear window is and having the low drag wing um definitely obscures a little bit of the view back behind you but you do have a ginormous area for storage space back there there's a lot of room of course you can take the roof pedal off which has this quilting as well and pop that away back there or you can always just do that if you want to have a bit of fun out on a significantly more open piece of road the big thing that i'm learning and taking in with this car if i just slow down a touch personally that downshifting ground matching is amazing is the amount of supercharging that it has i'm not quite sure how to describe this but you accelerate and then when you lift off the throttle it keeps accelerating for another second or so so you actually have to be really aware of what you're doing but the advice it makes my goodness it makes the acceleration in second gear let's put it down wow it picks up so quickly i'm actually a bit taken aback watching the numbers rising as fast as they are i didn't really expect that listen to that the overrun the bangs it's such a strange sensation though pressing the throttle and then feeling the power still coming from the supercharger and the other thing of course is the steering now i'm not going to pretend i like the steering it feels just too artificial for me the weight isn't really there at slow speed and in the middle there's lots of give it's very light and loose and it does weight it up when you're turning harder but it still doesn't quite feel right it doesn't feel how i want it to feel i'm gonna pop it back into sport mode for a second just to take things easier put it up into synthetic gear it becomes quiet it becomes civilized it becomes normal and quite relaxed actually and the seats are comfortable the seating position is great the feel of the driver zone with all the screens facing you is great everything works really well and i i mean the the undoubtable thing is that you get so much car for the money you get a proper super car for relative terms not as much as other cars with this much power this capability would cost you and that's the really impressive thing i i like it but i'm just a bit torn because i want to drive it harder to get more of a steering feel out of it obviously you can't really do that because this amount of power is so so far beyond what you can actually use let's just be completely honest about it back into tour mode let's put it into track mode again just to do this rise and very quickly you reach the speed limit and that's the end of that um i want to be able to drive it harder i like i mean speed manual you're shifting up and down a lot if you want to and there's a lot of talk available obviously nearly a thousand newton meters and who are we kidding you probably can accelerate it uh let's put it into sixth gear here put my foot down yeah instantly away you go there's no question at all that it can just pull up the numbers um but it does get you through the gears very quickly i missed there i went to more one second but i think it was quite natural it's just so loud oh in a very good way in a very very good way we ventured out to a new area of reclaimed land so i'm parked at the moment in the middle of a bridge on an estate that's not yet fully up and running but this is the perfect opportunity to show you a little bit more through what we have inside here some of the systems and controls and i think most importantly we will start with a little sound check so that you can hear the noise of this exhaust so you can't rev it all the way up when you're parked still but take a listen to this how epic is that a proper old-school rumbly v8 making a proper proper proper grumble it's it might be a little bit childish but we're all kids at heart and the sound of this is really really awesome there are some things of course i've mentioned that i'm not necessarily the biggest fan of for example the steering and the way the supercharger feels in terms of the power delivery is just a little bit funny but that sound for this money along with the tech that you do have is all really impressive so in the track mode where we are currently set you have that rev counter going up to about six and a half up towards the red line you have the temperature in the sensor you can see down at the bottom that we're in track mode and if i toggle here with the driver mode select to go through the different modes you can go down into sport and then one further into tour where the exhaust valves close as well and it all gets a little bit quieter now you can see on the screens the arrows so we can actually use this toggle on the right hand side to scroll to the left where you can see a number of different things some of your settings some of the different modes depending what you want to be able to uh to view and see and that changes here the different view you go into the sport view like that you get the large rev counter all the way around and the tour view like this should you wish and you can link those to the drive mode so it was set basically to have the track view in every different driving mode then you can scroll up here go through head up display settings um just some information gauges speed warning you can imagine lots of different things that you can show and head up display actually just to talk about that if you can see it on the road in front of me even has your g-forces underneath the speedo when you're in the track mode which is kind of cool when you're driving to be able to see that as you're going along coming back to the screen then just to go through the different pages if we go to the right here um the head-up display that's to change the height of it and then you can go into various different things basically and then back to the left and bring up the performance display which is where you get the temperature uh coolant temperature your accelerometer if you want to time your naught to 100 your g4 sensor there as well or a readout uh or your tire pressures that's quite cool to have that and all your temperatures that's actually a really good gauge to have up if you're out on the track in particular with all of that information and this will sit sandwiched between the uh kilometer speedo on the left and on the right your fuel gauge up top and the pressure gauge down on the right so around the back we've got a few controls your mirror toggles head up display info lights um the reset trip button there your left store because of course your lights your right stalk is the wiper on the left side you have the steering wheel cruise control controls you have these paddles and yes a lot of people do think it's a bit funny to have the paddles on a car that is a manual obviously in the automatic car they would be the same paddle to go up and down between the gears and here they just disable or enable rev matching as you can see active rev match off the rev match back on and that makes uh the drive work out uh hotkeys to go through favorites volume over on the right all more or less as you would expect seat wise well lock and unlock buttons here inside the bose sound system speaker your memory seats um window controls there's an electronic release for the door so that's a button you'd press then just to look down here you have your uh electric seat movements as well with a nice corvette door sill so that is all i think fairly self-explanatory and down here is the button uh to open the rear hatch we can have a look back there very shortly coming over here engine start stop button around the back power on and off for the audio the button i showed you earlier to fold away the screen where in the back you have a usb port as well quite a decent amount of storage actually that goes quite far in to hide things away and beneath that some hotkeys jump between the different modes for example in here where you can see and you have access to the performance data recorder now this is what you would use out on a race track it basically uses a series of cameras and data and telemetry information if you put an sd card in to record what's going on and where the car is and lots of information with overlays which is really really nice that you get that with the car um you can see the basic kind of stuff cameras to look around front back good views lots to see there return it back to home and you've got these nice digital screens for the climate control with all the settings down beneath that as well before you get to your seven speed gearbox uh usual pass in reverse down there on the right inside there 12 volt cigarette socket cup holds the storage area which you can conceal away as well traction control button in the center so one press of this and puts it as you can see into the kind of sporty mode and then you'd hurt it turn it you'd hold it down to turn it off in the armrest just open this up you have some more usb ports small storage area another 12v socket as well in there not too much space you can see the seats here they've got the nice competition carbon fiber inserts supportive um not carbon on the back just gloss black on the back but then you look into the rear where you can see the mounting points for the roof but basically just a lot of space speaker back there at the very back quite a high deck to it but you can fit a lot of luggage in there behind you with this kind of backboard obviously stopping luggage from sliding further forwards and you just have this nice kind of wrap around feel of dashboard even around the passenger zone as well where there's an illuminated switch for the seat heating and seat cooling switch over on that side and you have those again here as well but it all it just it just is pretty good and the material finish is actually surprisingly nice as well it doesn't feel cheap there i say which is often what you kind of fear that a car out of america might be but it feels pretty good so let's just jump out in fact i'm going to turn the car off for the moment oh and we have a everything moving around so the steering wheel tucked up my seat moved back i'm going to press that to open the rear hatch and just take a step outside so that we can come around here it's a little bit breezy but check out this view it's kind of a cool place to be hey reclaimed land not a bad place to have driven out to lift this up you have to go over the wing but of course it misses the wing and then you have a very large amount of storage space back here which is rather convenient now if you did lift off the roof panel um you kind of need two people to do that from each side windows down unlatch it if i just show you inside you can see the way it latches inside here your latch there lifts off unbuckles and then you pop it away um into the boot definitely can't do that on my own holding a video camera but it would tuck back there and you can even squeeze some stuff around it as well if you have the high wing you do have to lift it over the wing which is not going to make your life very easy but like this works totally fine and you get a good view through as well which is always cool so let's close that back down i think that's dropped straight back into place nice and easily looks wise corvette pretty iconic really isn't it they might be changing the format for the next generation which is not going to be all that far away but this one the c7 has done very well leading up now to the zr1 which overall has been a lot of fun and really and truly an impressive amount of car for the money that's the big thing with this how much you get so it's a big thanks from me to sms for the opportunity to take this car out for a drive it might be available if someone out there is interested but i certainly had an awesome time pushing it hearing that v8 having fun driving with the guys in convoy and getting to experience the zr1 zr1 should i say maybe a little bit more out on the roads now i apologize for the wind right here it has just got quite blustery but i've enjoyed today what do you guys think about this car does it make sense would you buy one what do you think about the corvette zr1 anyway i'm gonna leave it for there thank you very much for watching as always guys and i will see you again very soon cheers youhi guys i'm shmee hello and welcome back to the channel where today you join me at sms design and performance in bahrain a shop where they do some pretty extraordinary have a bit of fun out on a significantly more open piece of road the big thing that i'm learning and taking in with this car if i just slow down a touch personally that downshifting ground matching is amazing is the amount of supercharging that it has i'm not quite sure how to describe this but you accelerate and then when you lift off the throttle it keeps accelerating for another second or so so you actually have to be really aware of what you're doing but the advice it makes my goodness it makes the acceleration in second gear let's put it down wow it picks up so quickly i'm actually a bit taken aback watching the numbers rising as fast as they are i didn't really expect that listen to that the overrun the bangs it's such a strange sensation though pressing the throttle and then feeling the power still coming from the supercharger and the other thing of course is the steering now i'm not going to pretend i like the steering it feels just too artificial for me the weight isn't really there at slow speed and in the middle there's lots of give it's very light and loose and it does weight it up when you're turning harder but it still doesn't quite feel right it doesn't feel how i want it to feel i'm gonna pop it back into sport mode for a second just to take things easier put it up into synthetic gear it becomes quiet it becomes civilized it becomes normal and quite relaxed actually and the seats are comfortable the seating position is great the feel of the driver zone with all the screens facing you is great everything works really well and i i mean the the undoubtable thing is that you get so much car for the money you get a proper super car for relative terms not as much as other cars with this much power this capability would cost you and that's the really impressive thing i i like it but i'm just a bit torn because i want to drive it harder to get more of a steering feel out of it obviously you can't really do that because this amount of power is so so far beyond what you can actually use let's just be completely honest about it back into tour mode let's put it into track mode again just to do this rise and very quickly you reach the speed limit and that's the end of that um i want to be able to drive it harder i like i mean speed manual you're shifting up and down a lot if you want to and there's a lot of talk available obviously nearly a thousand newton meters and who are we kidding you probably can accelerate it uh let's put it into sixth gear here put my foot down yeah instantly away you go there's no question at all that it can just pull up the numbers um but it does get you through the gears very quickly i missed there i went to more one second but i think it was quite natural it's just so loud oh in a very good way in a very very good way we ventured out to a new area of reclaimed land so i'm parked at the moment in the middle of a bridge on an estate that's not yet fully up and running but this is the perfect opportunity to show you a little bit more through what we have inside here some of the systems and controls and i think most importantly we will start with a little sound check so that you can hear the noise of this exhaust so you can't rev it all the way up when you're parked still but take a listen to this how epic is that a proper old-school rumbly v8 making a proper proper proper grumble it's it might be a little bit childish but we're all kids at heart and the sound of this is really really awesome there are some things of course i've mentioned that i'm not necessarily the biggest fan of for example the steering and the way the supercharger feels in terms of the power delivery is just a little bit funny but that sound for this money along with the tech that you do have is all really impressive so in the track mode where we are currently set you have that rev counter going up to about six and a half up towards the red line you have the temperature in the sensor you can see down at the bottom that we're in track mode and if i toggle here with the driver mode select to go through the different modes you can go down into sport and then one further into tour where the exhaust valves close as well and it all gets a little bit quieter now you can see on the screens the arrows so we can actually use this toggle on the right hand side to scroll to the left where you can see a number of different things some of your settings some of the different modes depending what you want to be able to uh to view and see and that changes here the different view you go into the sport view like that you get the large rev counter all the way around and the tour view like this should you wish and you can link those to the drive mode so it was set basically to have the track view in every different driving mode then you can scroll up here go through head up display settings um just some information gauges speed warning you can imagine lots of different things that you can show and head up display actually just to talk about that if you can see it on the road in front of me even has your g-forces underneath the speedo when you're in the track mode which is kind of cool when you're driving to be able to see that as you're going along coming back to the screen then just to go through the different pages if we go to the right here um the head-up display that's to change the height of it and then you can go into various different things basically and then back to the left and bring up the performance display which is where you get the temperature uh coolant temperature your accelerometer if you want to time your naught to 100 your g4 sensor there as well or a readout uh or your tire pressures that's quite cool to have that and all your temperatures that's actually a really good gauge to have up if you're out on the track in particular with all of that information and this will sit sandwiched between the uh kilometer speedo on the left and on the right your fuel gauge up top and the pressure gauge down on the right so around the back we've got a few controls your mirror toggles head up display info lights um the reset trip button there your left store because of course your lights your right stalk is the wiper on the left side you have the steering wheel cruise control controls you have these paddles and yes a lot of people do think it's a bit funny to have the paddles on a car that is a manual obviously in the automatic car they would be the same paddle to go up and down between the gears and here they just disable or enable rev matching as you can see active rev match off the rev match back on and that makes uh the drive work out uh hotkeys to go through favorites volume over on the right all more or less as you would expect seat wise well lock and unlock buttons here inside the bose sound system speaker your memory seats um window controls there's an electronic release for the door so that's a button you'd press then just to look down here you have your uh electric seat movements as well with a nice corvette door sill so that is all i think fairly self-explanatory and down here is the button uh to open the rear hatch we can have a look back there very shortly coming over here engine start stop button around the back power on and off for the audio the button i showed you earlier to fold away the screen where in the back you have a usb port as well quite a decent amount of storage actually that goes quite far in to hide things away and beneath that some hotkeys jump between the different modes for example in here where you can see and you have access to the performance data recorder now this is what you would use out on a race track it basically uses a series of cameras and data and telemetry information if you put an sd card in to record what's going on and where the car is and lots of information with overlays which is really really nice that you get that with the car um you can see the basic kind of stuff cameras to look around front back good views lots to see there return it back to home and you've got these nice digital screens for the climate control with all the settings down beneath that as well before you get to your seven speed gearbox uh usual pass in reverse down there on the right inside there 12 volt cigarette socket cup holds the storage area which you can conceal away as well traction control button in the center so one press of this and puts it as you can see into the kind of sporty mode and then you'd hurt it turn it you'd hold it down to turn it off in the armrest just open this up you have some more usb ports small storage area another 12v socket as well in there not too much space you can see the seats here they've got the nice competition carbon fiber inserts supportive um not carbon on the back just gloss black on the back but then you look into the rear where you can see the mounting points for the roof but basically just a lot of space speaker back there at the very back quite a high deck to it but you can fit a lot of luggage in there behind you with this kind of backboard obviously stopping luggage from sliding further forwards and you just have this nice kind of wrap around feel of dashboard even around the passenger zone as well where there's an illuminated switch for the seat heating and seat cooling switch over on that side and you have those again here as well but it all it just it just is pretty good and the material finish is actually surprisingly nice as well it doesn't feel cheap there i say which is often what you kind of fear that a car out of america might be but it feels pretty good so let's just jump out in fact i'm going to turn the car off for the moment oh and we have a everything moving around so the steering wheel tucked up my seat moved back i'm going to press that to open the rear hatch and just take a step outside so that we can come around here it's a little bit breezy but check out this view it's kind of a cool place to be hey reclaimed land not a bad place to have driven out to lift this up you have to go over the wing but of course it misses the wing and then you have a very large amount of storage space back here which is rather convenient now if you did lift off the roof panel um you kind of need two people to do that from each side windows down unlatch it if i just show you inside you can see the way it latches inside here your latch there lifts off unbuckles and then you pop it away um into the boot definitely can't do that on my own holding a video camera but it would tuck back there and you can even squeeze some stuff around it as well if you have the high wing you do have to lift it over the wing which is not going to make your life very easy but like this works totally fine and you get a good view through as well which is always cool so let's close that back down i think that's dropped straight back into place nice and easily looks wise corvette pretty iconic really isn't it they might be changing the format for the next generation which is not going to be all that far away but this one the c7 has done very well leading up now to the zr1 which overall has been a lot of fun and really and truly an impressive amount of car for the money that's the big thing with this how much you get so it's a big thanks from me to sms for the opportunity to take this car out for a drive it might be available if someone out there is interested but i certainly had an awesome time pushing it hearing that v8 having fun driving with the guys in convoy and getting to experience the zr1 zr1 should i say maybe a little bit more out on the roads now i apologize for the wind right here it has just got quite blustery but i've enjoyed today what do you guys think about this car does it make sense would you buy one what do you think about the corvette zr1 anyway i'm gonna leave it for there thank you very much for watching as always guys and i will see you again very soon cheers you\n"
