How to Cut Floor Tiles Around a Pipe: A Quick and Easy Guide
I'm Shannon from Host Improvements Comm, and welcome back to our channel! In today's quick video, I want to show you how to cut some floor tiles around a pipe that's coming up out of the floor. This is a common problem when installing a new toilet, as the pipe will eventually have a flange on it and cover up the entire area. Since nobody will ever see this cut, we don't need to be too precise or pretty with our work.
The situation we're dealing with is a piece of our black 3-inch ABS pipe sticking up out of the floor. Eventually, there will be a toilet flange over top of this pipe and the toilet sitting on it. Since we don't want any unnecessary cuts, we just need to notch around the pipe. I've roughly cut my pieces to length, and now I have this tile sitting where it would be. I need to be able to notch this piece here around our pipe.
I do have some room to work with, so I'm going to get some guidelines on there. This one is going to be fine, but this one is obviously going to need to be trimmed to fit around the pipe. So, I'll just kind of roughly get it in the basic area that I need it and get some reference marks on it. In this case, there are only two tiles I need to trim and make them fit around the pipe.
Now that we're in the shop, let's start making cuts on these tiles. All I have to do is cut into the tile over here and here, and then just score across there. That corner should break off, and it will work the same for this one. There's a slight chance you might break the end off when cutting through there, so be aware of that. We're using a 4-inch grinder to cut the tiles; you could use a wet saw if you have one, but if all you have is a grinder, you can make the cuts with it.
I'm not wearing a guard while working with the grinder, and I probably shouldn't be! A guard would provide extra protection for your hands and face. But since we're in a controlled environment like this shop, we can get away without one. We'll also need eye protection and ear protection when cutting through these tiles.
Let me just place a towel here to take some of the shock out of it and some of the vibration. Now that I've started cutting, I should be able to do the same thing on this other tile. After getting all my gear off, we'll set those in place and make sure they fit and need any adjustments.
Looking at what we got here, it's going to be fine. I allowed lots of clearance because I knew I had space to work with, so these tiles will cover up the entire area once the flange is on there. Those are good to go! Hopefully, you liked this quick video on how to cut a tile around a pipe; if it never has to be seen, then we don't have to worry too much about precision or detail.

this pipe is gonna eventually have a toilet flange on it and so we don't have to be real pretty with our cut or anything nobody's ever going to see it once the flange is there and the toilets over and everything so that's just a quick quick cut around an obstacle with a grinder so this is the situation we've got a piece of our black 3-inch ABS pipe sticking up out of the floor and like I said they'll eventually be a toilet flange over top of this and the toilet sitting on it so we don't have to be real pretty and we just need to get you know notched around the pipe so I've roughly I've cut my pieces to length but and I've got this tile sitting where it would be so I need to be able to notch this piece here around our pipe and like I said I do have room to go here so I'm just gonna simply get myself some guidelines on there so that would be that one this one here is going to be fine but this one here is obviously going to need to be trimmed to fit around that pipe so if I just kind of roughly get it in in the basic area that I need it and get some reference marks on it there so in this case there's only the two tiles I need to trim and make them fit around this pipe okay so we're obviously in the shop here now so we're gonna make some cuts on this on the tiles here basically all I've got to do is I'm gonna cut into the tile there and here and then just score across there and then that corner should break off same thing on this one I'll cut there and there and score and that should they should just break off there is a slight chance you're gonna break this end off so you know just be aware of that but if you can get cut through there you should be alright we're using a 4 inch grinder to cut you could use a wet I'll saw if you have it you know but if all you have is a grinder you can make this cut on there as well I don't have a guard on you probably should have a guard on I'm using a diamond embedded concrete blade that's segmented if you have one that's got a solid perimeter that's fine they'll work the same you're gonna have lots of dust and you're definitely going to need eye protection and ear protection so I'll just get suited up and I'll give it a whirl here I'm just going to place a towel here just to take some of the shock out of it just some of the vibration okay so there's our first cut should be able to do the same thing on this other one get all my gear off here okay so will you can see that's a little dusty and noisy for sure we'll just run in and set those in place make sure they fit and they should and if not we'll have to make a little adjustment okay so let's see what we got here it's gonna be fine and I allowed lots of clearance because I knew I had the space to work with so yep those are gonna be fine once your flange is on there it's gonna cover up that entire thing so those are good to go so hopefully you like that quick video on how to cut a tile around that pipe just a real quick and easy way to go if you know if
