Redmi Note 12 Pro vs Note 12 Pro Plus - Is 200MP just a gimmick?

The Portrait Situation on Xiaomi's Note 12 Pro Plus

In my previous video, I discussed how Xiaomi had improved its portrait mode capabilities, and for the most part, I prefer their portraits over those from the Note 12 Pro. One of the reasons for this is how differently the subject's skin tone are tuned between these two phones. The Note 12 Pro Plus maintains slightly better exposure and skin tone against how the subjects look somewhat pinkish in comparison to the Note 12 Pro.

However, I did notice a bit of smoothening going on in the portrait mode of the Note 12 Pro Plus, but it's not too significant. Their depth estimation and Edge detection are pretty much the same. The similarities between these two camera systems continue in the selfie department as well. Both cameras produce a red kind of pinkish skin tone slightly more on the Note 12 Pro, which I am not really a fan of. However, one interesting thing I found is that the Note 12 Pro Plus tries to sustain better exposure on the subject's face without ever going overboard, which makes the selfies appear more pleasing to the eyes.

Low Light Performance

This is the one area where I had high hopes for the larger and wider aperture 200 megapixel sensor on the Note 12 Pro Plus. However, as it turns out, the normal nighttime shots from the Note 12 Pro turned out better almost all the time in terms of glare control, highlights, and exposure. The 50 megapixel sensor still manages to push some incredible results under low light conditions. The thing is that the Redmi Note 12 Pro takes much longer to process the nighttime shots, whereas it feels like the new 12 Pro Plus is almost in a hurry to deliver the photos, which ends up ruining the shot.

However, things take quite a turn when you turn on the night mode with this camera. The Note 12 Pro Plus ends up taking superior photos with nice colors, contrast, details, and better optimization overall. Xiaomi also lets you take nighttime photos from the ultra-wide angle sensor on both these phones, and as expected, they are not that great.

Video Performance

Unfortunately, even though the Note 12 Pro and the Note 12 Pro Plus feature optical image stabilization (OIS) on their main cameras, Xiaomi has not enabled it to stabilize videos. This is not just Xiaomi; Samsung in its A-series lineup disables OIS for videos to differentiate its mid-range lineup with the high-end ones. Honestly, that sucks, and it was one of the trends I really wanted mobile brands to stop in 2023.

Here you have up to 4K 30 FPS recording options, and the videos come off pretty boldly from either of them. Switching to 1080p 60fps does not improve the stabilization either, which really makes me wonder why Xiaomi did not choose to crop the frame a little for steadier footage in the first place. So, you have to shoot the videos at 1080p 30 FPS mode on both these phones to get reasonably stable videos without needing a gimbal.

For selfie videos, there is still no option for 4K recording, and the 1080p 60fps footages as you can see they look nice but they come out quite shaky. Ultimately, this means that if you make TikToks on blocks, you'll be in trouble. However, the good news is that 1080p 30fps videos come out decently steady without sacrificing much on the field of view.

Verdict

If you're confused between the Note 12 Pro and the Note 12 Pro Plus in terms of their cameras, rest assured that the Note 12 Pro's 50 megapixel camera system is still quite impressive, even though it does not have a crazy high-resolution image sensor like the Note 2 up Pro Plus. I wouldn't call this 200 megapixel lens gimmicky or anything but simply does not offer substantially better photos or videos as the price cap suggests.

Save yourself some money and get the regular Note 12 Pro for the best value for your money, having said that I sincerely hope Xiaomi will continue to optimize this 200 megapixel sensor in the coming days. After all, this is the first time you've seen the Samsung HPX sensor in action, so with some further tweaking and tuning, maybe Xiaomi could unlock notably better performance from this sensor.

The Future of Camera Comparisons

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey what's up everyone Fatima here so finally xiaomi has launched the much anticipated redmi note 12 Pro Series in India at really aggressive prices as usual so if you look at the spec sheet of these two phones the redmi note 12 Pro and the note 12 Pro Plus they are quite similar to each other hence you might be confused about which one to buy here their biggest differences lies in the cameras where the note 12 pro has a 50 megapixel sensor over the 200 megapixel one on the Note 12 Pro Plus other than that they also differ in terms of their charging speeds but for me the note 12 Pro 67 watt charging is still more than fast enough and that 120 watt charging on the Note 12 Pro Plus does not really matter all that much I'm sure most of you feel the same way as well likewise the cheaper note 12 Pro is both lighter and thinner compared to the 12 Pro Plus however you do get a slightly better performance and thermals on the Note 12 Pro Plus all thanks to the better heat flow and paper chamber cooling system for a casual user like myself though neither of these things are that significant instead I'm more interested to know if that 200 megapixel camera is actually worth the hype and whether it is worth the extra money or not as we know higher megapixel count alone does not magically make the camera experience any better so I took a bunch of photos and videos from these two phones to find out the truth once and for all so let me tell you what I found okay starting with the regular daytime shots I was quite surprised to see that most images from these phones look quite identical at a glance under the default mode they both shoot 12.5 megapixel photos with four in one binning on the 12 Pros 50 megapixel Sony mx766 sensor and 16 in one binning in the case of note 12 Pro Plus is 200 megapixel Samsung HP X sensor and let me tell you whether it's dynamic range or highlight control the results don't look that different most of the time the only differences I've found is that the contrast level is consistently somewhat richer on the 12 Pro Plus and that's something I actually prefer because I feel like such tuning adds a bit of drama to the photo likewise another thing I noticed is that the note 12 Pro occasionally opts for a slightly warmer color tuning which results in oversaturated shots like this flower for example the close to Natural Turing on the 12 Pro Plus is well much more pleasing to my eyes in this case having said that the pinch of extra color boost on the Note 12 Pro does work in its favor sometimes to liven up the image but then again colors are a matter of personal preference so if you like the slightly poppy live view photos from the note 12 Pro that's perfectly fine too okay in terms of details I found the 12 Pro Plus to have a slightly upper hand as its bigger 200 megapixel sensor retains finer textures relatively better you can notice in these images that the note 12 Pro over sharpens the photo to give you a false sense of clarity but the note 12 Pro Plus does not need any of those tricks that being said if you are dead serious about detail levels xiaomi also lets you shoot at a dedicated 50 megapixel mode on the Note 12 Pro and both 50 megapixel and 200 megapixel modes on the 12 Pro Plus and let me just tell you the note 12 Pros high res 50 megapixel photos whole their ground quite well and that has impressed me like honestly the fine textures do turn out a bit rough and noisy here on some occasions compared to how the more expensive note 12 Pro Plus manages smoother textures but this is really not that big a deal I am more than happy with the sharpness and detail levels of the note 12 Pros images okay while the primary images from both the phones don't disappoint at all the ultra wide angle photos from these phones are simply not as impressive xiaomi has used the same 8 megapixel sensor on both the note 12 Pro and the Note 2 Pro Plus and it feels like the company has dumped all the resolution on the main camera and totally forgot about the rest and this is clearly noticeable as you zoom in the photo slightly what's even bad is that there's also a visible color shift from the primary to the ultra wide angle images from both these phones now if I have to nitpick the 12 Pros Ultra wide shots maintain better Shadow details at times by lifting the exposure levels in tricky situations like this uh Temple's roof for instance but on some other occasions the note 12 Pro Plus manages better dynamic range somehow and I don't know why but xiaomi's Imaging algorithm really likes boosting the blue sky as evident from these samples so yeah the ultra wide angle shots are not that impressive on both these phones I mean they're not horrendous or anything like that but it's just that xiaomi could have done a much better job in this regard now the portrait situation on these phones is quite interesting in my redmi note 12 Pro Plus this video I mentioned how xiaomi had opted its portrait game and for the most part I prefer its portraits over those from the note 12 Pro because of mostly how differently the subject's skin tone are tuned between these
