2019 Audi A8L _ The Hovercraft of Cars

**The Audi A8: A Masterclass in Comfort and Refinement**

As I spent more time with the Audi A8, I realized that this car is not just about driving enjoyment, but also about creating an immersive experience for its passengers. The combination of advanced technology, premium materials, and impeccable craftsmanship results in a truly exceptional driving machine.

**A Symphony of Sound and Silence**

When it comes to audio quality, the Audi A8 delivers. The system is paired with some of the most advanced technologies on the market, including 16 speakers and a 1,400-watt amplifier. This setup creates an immersive sonic experience that's hard to match. However, as I mentioned earlier, there's not a lot of "sporty" driving enjoyment in this car. Instead, it floats over bumps, glides smoothly, and has a tendency to wallow when cornering. While this may be intentional on the part of Audi, some drivers might find it too laid-back.

**A Balance of Innovation and Intuition**

The A8's interior is a marvel of innovation, with advanced features like a head-up display, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and even an optional tablet holder in the rear seat. The user interface is highly intuitive, with a focus on gesture control and voice commands. However, this results in too many screens and displays at night, which can be distracting. Additionally, some of the features feel like they're trying to bridge a gap between old-school design and modern tech. While it's great that Audi is pushing the boundaries of innovation, there's still room for improvement.

**A Masterclass in Comfort**

The Audi A8 is undoubtedly one of the most comfortable cars I've ever had the pleasure of driving. The ride quality is sublime, with a smoothness that's hard to match. The seats are incredibly supportive and adjustable, with features like massage functionality and a range of cushioning options. Even the smallest details, like the subtle whispers of the air conditioning vents or the soft chirping of the infotainment system, contribute to an overall sense of serenity.

**Taking it to the Limit**

In terms of driving dynamics, the Audi A8 is a bit of a mixed bag. While it's not exactly sporty, there's something undeniably alluring about its effortless acceleration and smooth shifting. However, when you start pushing the limits, things get interesting. The engine feels a bit gutless, and the transmission can be slow to respond to inputs. It's clear that Audi is catering to a more practical audience with this car, rather than enthusiasts who crave raw driving excitement.

**A Luxury Experience for the Ages**

One of the most striking aspects of the Audi A8 is its ability to create an executive-level experience without being too ostentatious. The interior design is understated yet sophisticated, with premium materials and attention-grabbing details that evoke a sense of refinement and sophistication. Whether you're driving or simply sitting in the back seat, there's a palpable sense of calmness and serenity.

**The Verdict**

In conclusion, the Audi A8 is a true masterpiece of modern car design. While it may not be perfect – its lack of driving excitement being one notable flaw – it's an exceptional all-rounder that sets a new standard for comfort and refinement. With its incredible attention to detail, luxurious interior, and cutting-edge technology, this car is the ultimate indulgence for those who value elegance and sophistication above all else.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: ennow I know this is extraordinarily strange for me to be sitting out in the middle of nowhere with an Audi a8 L or long wheelbase and as you saw in the title when I named this a hovercraft this is one of the most enjoyable vehicles I've driven in a long time and I put so many miles on it because of that I put every single person I could possibly find in this to drive them around so they can experience what it's like to basically drive around on a cloud so let's get to the exterior montage and show you some of the interior now when I saw the a8 for the first time I had to laugh this is one of the most nondescript understated sterile looking vehicles I've seen in a long time and then it makes perfect sense when you're in the backseat with a peasant blockers up I joked around with my elite circle of friends that we should literally pull up the shopping centers roll down the windows and tell people well we're gonna be making some budget cuts and it's time to let you go because most of the time you're probably gonna be driven around in this thing you're gonna be exhausted tired you're gonna be working a 500 hour weeks and that is exactly where this is a haven but let's get on the inside and talk about that alright I'm not gonna kid you you need to take a seminar to learn about all the things that's on the inside of this vehicle it is a nuts in a large part it's because of all the technology they've jammed in here but I'm gonna tell you is when you get past some of the things like soft closed doors the electronic door handle that you kind of just pull a little bit the vents that open and close when you're not using them to make it look more luxury the alloy materials pretty much the buttonless interior for the most part this has to be one of the quietest vehicles you're ever gonna get in one of the most comfortable you have acoustic laminated glass all around these seats have a massaging function that truly works and it feels like it's doing something other than just poking and prodding at you like an annoying insect the Bang & Olufsen sound system tested extremely well it's not as good as the Bauer setup but one of the things about this interior is when you're on the road and you're driving even at let's say a hundred plus miles an hour it it's almost like the car is parked and it gives you that level of isolation where the sound system may while it may not have the smoothness smoothest frequency response it has some peaks and valleys in it but it always sounds consistent my biggest complaint and I say this a lot is there's too much shiny material in here and you can see it I haven't cleaned it and this is just from a week of using this and because everything is reliant on touchscreen you have to really use this and not only do you have to use it they've included haptic feedback on the screen and haptic feedback including a push resistance so when there's an icon on the screen that you have to interact with it will literally activate that icon that you have to push in the screen and feel a click to hit it and this is one of the most intuitive most simple to use touchscreens that you're ever going to get into because you get a sense of feedback if you try to push on the screen where there's not an icon it will not allow you to push down the screen and click it so there's a ton of development that went into this upper screen now your lower screen is for all your hvac controls and this is where I kind of have a problem with it because you know it's it's a pro and a con it's way better than what Land Rover did here Land Rover Jaguar did with their Panasonic this design dual screen this does not have any lag it comes up right away it works efficiently but again it's always on and I feel like it's very distracting to kind of look at where you need to go and then at night you know you can only disable the top screen and there's just some shared functionality between the two that you have to get used to now if you've seen any of my videos you're gonna know that I am NOT a big fan of one manufacturers try to electronically control tried-and-true functions and cars like what they're doing here with the vent control its capacitive touch to open and close event where you typically have a mechanical control that you roll with your thumb but what I will say about the a8 and I know exactly what they're trying to do here is to simplify and declutter the interior space a clean aesthetic translates into a more serene driving environment or a passenger environment and it's extremely successful here and when you understand that and end this in this class of car it translates into something which I said in the beginning it's one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in quite a long time when you're stuck in traffic you're in a long commute or you're in a passenger when you're a passenger in here your stress level goes from like if you have a bad day it will drop it down from an 8 to a 7 or a 6 or a 10 to a 9 and it takes the edge off this is one of the first cars also that I've literally wanted to ride in the backseat and I know that sounds douchey but it's true and let me head back there I'm gonna show you some of this stuff alright one of the best ways to illustrate this is to look at how huge this door is it is enormous and you know you can roll down these electronic buzzing blockers you can roll down the window and you see just how much room you have back here when you open up this door I'd say if you are somebody like you are really tall or you're really big I don't know you basically would not have to be human if you couldn't fit back here with the center armrest down this fits two passengers back here pretty much any single size you can adjust the back seat it reclines it has a full massaging feature and one of the best items is it has this almost tablet design which is based on some open source Linux platform and you can control your seats the mood lighting your map lighting and can change kind of the direction of where the light is focused you can change the color of the entire entire interior lighting from the back seats you can have your seat heaters seat coolers on you can control the audio setup pair your audio with this and in the front there is even stuff like the fragrance control if you opt for it you can have like a winter and a summer smell that pumps through the HVAC controls which to me smells like old spice or Axe body spray I hope they have more options for that electronically I leave it off because I just can't can't stand the chemical smell but if you're somebody that is is using this tool it'll deliver people as a almost a driver it is something because if somebody comes in here with severe body odor you can kind of get rid of the smell through the HVAC controls and I can see the function of that you have two power outlets here two 12-volt connectors you have two huge cupholders the door area cupholders are immense I loved sitting back here and every single person that has gotten in here has been just wowed by this overall space alright there's so much more to talk about I mean trunk space you have all LED tail lights this is the epitome of what I perceive to be a true luxury car something that you're going to use to either haul executives in or drive yourself around every day there's so much space the thought to design the thoughts of comfort is I mean I'm so impressed with this thing on that level you know I'll talk to more about some of the negatives about the electronic side and the final thoughts but let's head into the shop let's take a look at this with Scott and see what the underbody looks like back in the shop with the Audi a8 oh I feel like I should be sitting in a chair reading a book smoking a pipe or something with this thing mm-hmm you should be in the backseat while I draw that - yeah driving smoking your pipe in the back while I take you to Walmart in that this car is the L because it's the long wheelbase which gives you about five extra inches and as we all know five inches can make a big difference so when we look at the underbody Scott what do you see in a bunch of black outdoor carpet yes it's got our outdoor carpeting all over it to reduce road noise and ivh and this is one of the most one of the quietest cars I've ever been in that's not insanely insanely price like over $150,000 and when you look at the suspension this is outtie setup again with what you see in a lot of luxury cars I mean most of them in this class of aluminium some airbags yep your ear spring damper are combined here and this is one of the best things about this car this does not have the advanced option where each wheel has an actuator in the suspension it is just a more traditional air setup and the drive modes the body control modules can monitor all the sensors to adjust it based on your road condition speed and one of the coolest things about it is the 360 safety system on this car is capable of changing the ride height before it senses a side impact or an impact so it will actually raise this one side of the car that you're gonna get hit on to help reduce injuries kind of creative mmm-hmm can you drop me off at the Rolex store when we're done oh you want to get a Rolex I need to get mine repaired Oh what's wrong with that let's stop taking well you don't need a Rolex in this car Scott because it's got about 27,000 digital clocks and the screens when we look at the back all eight eighths now come with all-wheel drive and there is an option or four-wheel steering which I think on a vehicle like this would be pointless unless maybe you're near up or in the mountains or something driving your compadres around the second thing this does not have is the sport rear differential which is another thing that I don't think that this vehicle needs unless you're doing a lot of insanely treacherous mountain driving where you can use the extra performance now the interesting part about the a8 is it has a mild hybrid system and you kind of said why why yeah it is safe point two miles per gallon yep and this exists because of all our global emissions and fuel economy regulations wherever they can save they save so what they do is they use a 48 volt electrical system the second thing use is a belt driven alternator that can restart the engine because they've paired it with a very small lithium-ion battery so it uses brake regeneration to store up energy in that battery and then when you're on the highway it can literally turn off the engine from 35 miles an hour to 99 miles an hour and it can leave it off for like 40 seconds at a time so it's saving fuel by not running and then it can restart the motor from that belt driven system and how often does it do that a lot and you'll notice when you're coming to a stop unlike most start/stop systems when you come to a stop it waits and then turns off the engine as you're coasting the engine will just die it feels like it's stalled out as you're coasting and it'll turn it off and it seamlessly turns it on but it does have some vibration from a dead stop if you get on the gas to get it restarted and it doesn't proactively start you'll feel a shudder from it so there's still the negative part about that there but everything else is typical Audi stuff in the back there's a ton of coverings aluminum braces your aluminum knuckles you have aluminum control arms and you more your air spring is connected with the damper assembly here and the only thing that's weird compared to like the BMWs we looked at this does not have an aluminum subframe carrier it has a cast or stamped steel subframe carrier which you said was you know for maybe its dad wait it could be it could be for balance or weight balance as well to add some weight no man I think about how front heavy this cars gotta be yeah for sure speaking of which holy I know it's ridiculous don't touch that metal bar oh this car has been off for probably 25 30 minutes and it is scalding hot and what's the reason for all that heat Scott it doesn't have any louvers in the hood and why would it need that oh boy yeah this should probably truthfully have a huge warning sticker on that plastic cover because your turbo is sitting right there yeah and all your exhaust is running over the top of the motor you can't really see it I'll try to get an angle but all your your exhaust manifold is all covered in gold heat reflective foil in the wall the tunnel the firewall tunnel there I think we should take the aluminum foil off and look under there I would love to if this was not a pressed car set up like a aluminum baking pan and see how long it would take to cook bacon on this thing after just like turning it off for five minutes I mean the less air that comes in here for aerodynamics and fuel efficiency is better right yeah they wanted to go around the car under the car over the car they don't want it coming in here and circulate around yeah this is crazy and this is modern cardizem this is by far the hottest one ever I mean I thought the RCF was bad and the BMW was really bad but I mean that was driven a little differently than this one was yeah this is just normal driving and it's it's insanely can you imagine and stop and go traffic when you have the front and the rear AC on and you got all the heat from the condenser dissipated night well you got ancillary coolers and the front bumper here for inner coolers and I believe there's a engine oil cooler to which you would hope that you would have here but I mean the cooling system on this thing's got to take a beating head to the dealer and lease this bit taking a spin in the Audi a8 L and while they much prefer to be a passenger I've chosen to drive this at night because there is such serenity and operating this the interior lighting granted it is insanely bright when you have all the accent lighting and all of these screens on there's something about driving this car that I really appreciate now let's talk about some of the technology on the inside NVIDIA has supplied some of the technology for the dual screens and the center stack and of course the multimedia gauge cluster they've been doing this for a while and that is one of the reasons why it is extremely fast to operate there's no lag there's no glitching no more than you would expect it's in the 90th percentile one of the best interfaces you could possibly get in a car now is there a lot yes and it can be very distracting luckily you can turn a majority of this off and just enjoy cruising around now what you expect in this is that it is an extremely isolated driving experience and that it is it's one of the most isolated I've ever been in in fact I've had times when I'm just cruising along and I'm starting to fall asleep but I'm not kidding you it's it's just that quiet and that soft of a ride now even when you go into like dynamic drive mode and all that which is absolutely pointless the ride is still buttery soft it is one of the best things about this car if you're road tripping if you are driving people around constantly or just need one of the most soft rides if you're older or you have health problems and you know you you're in constant pain this car is going to help a lot with that now if you're looking for performance that is probably the worst thing about the Audi with this three liter it is it feels like what you would expect from pretty much other every outtie & VW product except because of the way to this it just takes a while for it to get going from a start that's where you notice that the most but on the highway and all that it is great the last part about it is the transmission performance outtie and BMW have the pretty much the best torque inverted automatic programming in the market and you get that here it's smooth it's quick it rarely has any weird gear shock or gear change issues and when you manually control it it's very responsive which of course you're never gonna do combined with the audio system the technology the ride quality and the overall refinement and quality of the interior I would say for around a hundred thousand dollars if you want one of the most refined comfortable driving experiences this is probably one of the best cars I've ever driven but you trade off a lot in terms of driving enjoyment because there's not a lot of that here there's nothing sporty about it it floats around it wallows it glides over everything there's no steering feel there's no good sound from the engine so you know they've gone to the opposite extreme and that's exactly what they were trying to do and again it is amazing in that regard but let's take this into the shop for final thoughts and take it from there final thoughts on the Audi a8 and I'm gonna get right into the pros and the cons with this and I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna do a lot of gushing about it this is one of the first cars that I've had as a press car that I put so many miles on it I couldn't believe it and one of the reasons was I was pushing I was driving a lot to see how long it would take me to get sick of operating it and I know you're gonna think well how can this guy get tired of all these new and fancy cars and I'm gonna tell you it's like anything else most of the modern cars are wash rinse repeat they're all a big copy and paste job they're all trying to be the same thing so it's just like drinking the same thing every day or eating the same thing you do get fatigued from it and I never got tired of driving a8 and I'm gonna tell you why it's so good the comfort level is just unbelievable the serenity that you get it is such a serene space that my stress level dropped operating this car and just sitting in it and being in it it is so secluded from the outside world when you're driving it in traffic you feel a sense of calmness and this is an executive level car this is what they're trying to do the most I took great pride in taking passengers in the back seat I took pride in bringing people around and letting them see the car and just enjoy the experience of being in it and that is where this AAA is such a great car there's not one person that complained about its comfort or quietness everybody felt better just being in it was it was like a spa day without being in a spa and there's very few cars that can do that for you now all the electronics work great the seat massages are some of the best I've tested and under 100 grand the back seat tablet is amazing it allows each each back passenger individual control of lighting their seat massagers their HVAC controls the audio controls and the infotainment engaged cluster work at such a high level there's no lag there's no freeze ups the processing speeds good the GPU acceleration is good and of course the graphical or the graphics itself don't look cheesy or chintzy but that brings me into the negative part this is a complicated big car full of electronics it's a lease only machine the there's too many screens too many displays at night you can only turn off one of these center screens and that drove me crazy the bottom one for hvac controls is way too heavily reliant on touch there's way too much having to touch a screen in this car despite it having one of the most intuitive haptic feedback systems where you literally can only push the screen and feel a physical click and indent when you're touching the right icon so there's great innovation here but again is way too much touch and I think they're trying to bridge the gap which they're triage they've done really well but again it's one of those you're gonna have to get in and play with it and see how distracted you are by it I was just too much too much to play around with the last part is the engine and transmission this engine feels so wimpy in here the cars are too big for it and I know why they only have one engine option it's because people aren't buying these cars anymore it's not a high-volume vehicle so there's no point in trying to stuff multiple engine options it costs more from a manufacturing perspective the motors smooth it's quiet the transmission is buttery smooth but it just feels gutless and I think really that's it other than the vehicle being a little bit sterile looking you drive this thing around you're gonna feel better and I think that's thing that's the best thing it's like automotive medicine for the Soul thanks for watching I'll see you next time I'm on my laptop right now this is the gentleman you're leaving before very well I hate the savage geese I'm gonna show you how to get rid of them just like this younow I know this is extraordinarily strange for me to be sitting out in the middle of nowhere with an Audi a8 L or long wheelbase and as you saw in the title when I named this a hovercraft this is one of the most enjoyable vehicles I've driven in a long time and I put so man I think about how front heavy this cars gotta be yeah for sure speaking of which holy I know it's ridiculous don't touch that metal bar oh this car has been off for probably 25 30 minutes and it is scalding hot and what's the reason for all that heat Scott it doesn't have any louvers in the hood and why would it need that oh boy yeah this should probably truthfully have a huge warning sticker on that plastic cover because your turbo is sitting right there yeah and all your exhaust is running over the top of the motor you can't really see it I'll try to get an angle but all your your exhaust manifold is all covered in gold heat reflective foil in the wall the tunnel the firewall tunnel there I think we should take the aluminum foil off and look under there I would love to if this was not a pressed car set up like a aluminum baking pan and see how long it would take to cook bacon on this thing after just like turning it off for five minutes I mean the less air that comes in here for aerodynamics and fuel efficiency is better right yeah they wanted to go around the car under the car over the car they don't want it coming in here and circulate around yeah this is crazy and this is modern cardizem this is by far the hottest one ever I mean I thought the RCF was bad and the BMW was really bad but I mean that was driven a little differently than this one was yeah this is just normal driving and it's it's insanely can you imagine and stop and go traffic when you have the front and the rear AC on and you got all the heat from the condenser dissipated night well you got ancillary coolers and the front bumper here for inner coolers and I believe there's a engine oil cooler to which you would hope that you would have here but I mean the cooling system on this thing's got to take a beating head to the dealer and lease this bit taking a spin in the Audi a8 L and while they much prefer to be a passenger I've chosen to drive this at night because there is such serenity and operating this the interior lighting granted it is insanely bright when you have all the accent lighting and all of these screens on there's something about driving this car that I really appreciate now let's talk about some of the technology on the inside NVIDIA has supplied some of the technology for the dual screens and the center stack and of course the multimedia gauge cluster they've been doing this for a while and that is one of the reasons why it is extremely fast to operate there's no lag there's no glitching no more than you would expect it's in the 90th percentile one of the best interfaces you could possibly get in a car now is there a lot yes and it can be very distracting luckily you can turn a majority of this off and just enjoy cruising around now what you expect in this is that it is an extremely isolated driving experience and that it is it's one of the most isolated I've ever been in in fact I've had times when I'm just cruising along and I'm starting to fall asleep but I'm not kidding you it's it's just that quiet and that soft of a ride now even when you go into like dynamic drive mode and all that which is absolutely pointless the ride is still buttery soft it is one of the best things about this car if you're road tripping if you are driving people around constantly or just need one of the most soft rides if you're older or you have health problems and you know you you're in constant pain this car is going to help a lot with that now if you're looking for performance that is probably the worst thing about the Audi with this three liter it is it feels like what you would expect from pretty much other every outtie & VW product except because of the way to this it just takes a while for it to get going from a start that's where you notice that the most but on the highway and all that it is great the last part about it is the transmission performance outtie and BMW have the pretty much the best torque inverted automatic programming in the market and you get that here it's smooth it's quick it rarely has any weird gear shock or gear change issues and when you manually control it it's very responsive which of course you're never gonna do combined with the audio system the technology the ride quality and the overall refinement and quality of the interior I would say for around a hundred thousand dollars if you want one of the most refined comfortable driving experiences this is probably one of the best cars I've ever driven but you trade off a lot in terms of driving enjoyment because there's not a lot of that here there's nothing sporty about it it floats around it wallows it glides over everything there's no steering feel there's no good sound from the engine so you know they've gone to the opposite extreme and that's exactly what they were trying to do and again it is amazing in that regard but let's take this into the shop for final thoughts and take it from there final thoughts on the Audi a8 and I'm gonna get right into the pros and the cons with this and I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna do a lot of gushing about it this is one of the first cars that I've had as a press car that I put so many miles on it I couldn't believe it and one of the reasons was I was pushing I was driving a lot to see how long it would take me to get sick of operating it and I know you're gonna think well how can this guy get tired of all these new and fancy cars and I'm gonna tell you it's like anything else most of the modern cars are wash rinse repeat they're all a big copy and paste job they're all trying to be the same thing so it's just like drinking the same thing every day or eating the same thing you do get fatigued from it and I never got tired of driving a8 and I'm gonna tell you why it's so good the comfort level is just unbelievable the serenity that you get it is such a serene space that my stress level dropped operating this car and just sitting in it and being in it it is so secluded from the outside world when you're driving it in traffic you feel a sense of calmness and this is an executive level car this is what they're trying to do the most I took great pride in taking passengers in the back seat I took pride in bringing people around and letting them see the car and just enjoy the experience of being in it and that is where this AAA is such a great car there's not one person that complained about its comfort or quietness everybody felt better just being in it was it was like a spa day without being in a spa and there's very few cars that can do that for you now all the electronics work great the seat massages are some of the best I've tested and under 100 grand the back seat tablet is amazing it allows each each back passenger individual control of lighting their seat massagers their HVAC controls the audio controls and the infotainment engaged cluster work at such a high level there's no lag there's no freeze ups the processing speeds good the GPU acceleration is good and of course the graphical or the graphics itself don't look cheesy or chintzy but that brings me into the negative part this is a complicated big car full of electronics it's a lease only machine the there's too many screens too many displays at night you can only turn off one of these center screens and that drove me crazy the bottom one for hvac controls is way too heavily reliant on touch there's way too much having to touch a screen in this car despite it having one of the most intuitive haptic feedback systems where you literally can only push the screen and feel a physical click and indent when you're touching the right icon so there's great innovation here but again is way too much touch and I think they're trying to bridge the gap which they're triage they've done really well but again it's one of those you're gonna have to get in and play with it and see how distracted you are by it I was just too much too much to play around with the last part is the engine and transmission this engine feels so wimpy in here the cars are too big for it and I know why they only have one engine option it's because people aren't buying these cars anymore it's not a high-volume vehicle so there's no point in trying to stuff multiple engine options it costs more from a manufacturing perspective the motors smooth it's quiet the transmission is buttery smooth but it just feels gutless and I think really that's it other than the vehicle being a little bit sterile looking you drive this thing around you're gonna feel better and I think that's thing that's the best thing it's like automotive medicine for the Soul thanks for watching I'll see you next time I'm on my laptop right now this is the gentleman you're leaving before very well I hate the savage geese I'm gonna show you how to get rid of them just like this you\n"
