The Most Capable Version of the Jeep Wrangler Just Kicks Things Up a Few Notches
Jeep has teamed up with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) to create a special edition package for the Rubicon, celebrating 20 years of the Rubicon version and adding even more off-road-focused extras. This is the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th anniversary edition, built to get you out to where the adventure is and back again.
Jeep First Launched Its Rubicon Model Back in 2003
Jeep first launched its Rubicon model back in 2003, initially shutting it off at the Easter Jeep Safari out in Moab in the spring of 2002. Then, it put it right into production as I'm sure many a Wrangler fan saw it and started drooling. That first Rubicon was on the TJ model, adding front rear lockers, sliders, Dana 44 axles, and a four-to-one low range to the mix.
The Rubicon Appeared with the 2007 JK
Next, the Rubicon appeared with the 2007 JK, which is where we first saw the electronic disconnecting from sway bar - an awesome piece of kit that continues to be popular today. Jeep also jumped the tire size to 32s for this model, which almost seems quaint by today's standards for the 2013 Rubicon 10th anniversary model. The sliders got beefier and so did the front rear bumpers, while Jeep also gave it a half-inch suspension lift.
The JL Generation Rubicon Moved to 33s
In 2018, the JL generation Rubicon moved to 33s, which improved the crawl ratio on the manual transmission to an impressive 84-1. This was followed by the addition of off-road plus drive mode in 2021, providing even more capability for those who need it. The 35-inch tires are available as an option, and there's also an optional 488 rear axle ratio and a 100-to-1 crawl ratio with the manual gearbox.
The Availability of This Package on the 4xe Hybrid and the 392 Monster V8
Fast forward to the 2023 Rubicon offerings, and it's the hybrid and the mighty 392 monster V8 that get the 20th anniversary packages. Jeep kicks off with a triple hoop setup on the front bumper, a half-inch suspension lift, and an 83-piece tool kit as standard equipment. This is even better than before, as the 392 comes outfitted with 35-inch tires, while the onboard air compressor allows you to air down at the trailhead then air right back up for the drive home.
These Models Will Be Apart from Standard Rubicon Jeeps
You can tell these models apart from standard Rubicon Jeeps with a revised grille design, beadlock-capable wheels, and 20th anniversary decals on the inside. They get red and black leather seats, a unique medallion by the shifter, and a plaque on the rear swing gate. There's actually more to each of these models if you're willing and ready to spend serious money.
Jeep and AEV Created a Level 2 Package for These 20th Anniversary Models
Just 150 of these 20th anniversary models will be built, with the additional items making them pretty awesome. You'll have a worn VR Evo 10s winch up front, AEV 17-inch wheels, and an AEV design suspension system with Bilstein 5100 shocks. There's also AEV off-road lights reworked for the front and rear, an AEV front skid plate, an AEV tire carrier, a proper AEV off-road jack base, and even Mopar performance wipers with washer jets integrated into the wipers.
The Specs Improve with This Package
The specs improve significantly with this package. The ground clearance is now 14.2 inches, allowing you to push deeper into the wilderness than ever before. You can also forward up to 37.1 inches of water, making it perfect for those who need to get through tough terrain. And with a 50-degree approach angle, 33-degree breakover angle, and 43-degree departure angle, these Wranglers are truly well-specified.
The Cost of These Models
The cost of these models is quite steep. The base price for a 20th anniversary Rubicon 4xe is $71,380, while the 392 starts at $92,690. This is because the full price of the level two version is $94,358 for the 4xe and $121,820 for the 392. If you have the means and desire to go anywhere right off the showroom floor, then these models are worth considering.
Production Is Set to Begin This Quarter
Production is set to begin this quarter, with vehicles expected to arrive in the spring of next year. So, if you're ready to take your adventures to the next level, be sure to keep an eye out for these incredible machines. And remember, girding your bank accounts may be necessary, but it'll all be worth it when you hit the trails and show off your new Rubicon 20th anniversary model.
