Introduction to Gary Sims: A Journey Through Technology and Beyond
Welcome everybody here at Android Authority, we have a tradition that every YouTuber should make an introduction video, so I'm Gary Sims, and this video is all about me. Where do I start? When I was 11 years old, my grandfather gave me a ZX81 computer, and ever since then, I've been into technology. This simple yet powerful machine sparked a passion in me that has continued to grow over the years.
Growing Up with Technology
After finishing school, I eventually went on to do a degree in Business Information Systems from a UK University, which is a computer science-related degree. This education laid the foundation for my future career as a software engineer. My first company was called Deck or Digital Equipment Corporation, a well-known name in the industry famous for their mini computers, such as the VX mini computers. These computers were equipped with a 64-bit Alpha processor and ran on the VMS operating system.
A Brief History of Deck and Its Acquisitions
Deck eventually got bought by Compact, which then got acquired by HP. Over time, Deck just disappeared into the annals of history. As for me, after working at Deck, I went to work for Writers, a company that stored millions of stories in their databases. These databases were accessible to journalists to check facts and figures and previous stories for new ones they were writing.
My Career After Deck
I then worked for Reuters, where I was part of the department responsible for broadcast television equipment, specifically working on digital encryption systems for satellite television. In 2002, things changed a bit in my life. I got into writing, starting with blogging, and eventually, I began blogging for Linux.com. Before it got bought out by the Linux Foundation, I wrote articles for Open Logic, an IT manager's journal.
A Book on Network Attached Storage
In 2008, I wrote a book called "Learning Freas," which is an operating system that can be installed on your PC and turns it into network-attached storage. I put lots of hard drives in it, allowing you to access it from Windows, Mac, Linux, and more. Although the company, Packt Publishing, asked me to write a new version recently, unfortunately, due to my commitments here at Android Authority, I wasn't able to take up that offer.
My Time at Android Authority
I started working here at Android Authority in 2012 and have been having a great time writing about the news, reviewing devices, looking at all the happenings in the Android world, phones, tablets, robots, small computers, and everything related to ARM. It's very exciting! Now that I'm starting to make videos, this is my introduction video, so you know who I am when you see me reviewing a device or talking about something happening in the Android World outside of Android.
Personal Life
I like to spend time with my wife and kids, being heavily involved in my local church. I've also been known to do a spot of fishing. That's a bit about me for now. Maybe later on when you get to know me better, I'll do another introduction video, answer some of your questions, or expand on this little bit. But for the moment, that's who I am. Don't forget to subscribe to Android Authority, and that's it! Thanks for watching, and I'll see you in my next video.
A Special Thank You
Did someone mention T? That was a nice surprise at the end of our conversation.
