AMG Winter Sporting - Mercedes-AMG Drifting in 600hp Cars

The Joy of Drifting: A Review of the Winter Driving Program with Yuri and Jacob

As I sat behind the wheel of our trusty C63 S, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and nervousness. We were about to embark on a winter driving program, and I had no idea what to expect. Our instructors, Yuri and Jacob, welcomed us with open arms and explained that this would be an experience like no other.

The day began with a briefing from our engineers, who informed us that Mercedes had flown in a special engineer from Germany to disable the traction control system on their cars. This was crucial, as they explained, because by law, Electronic Stability Programs (ESPs) must turn off even if traction control is disabled. Our instructor told us that this engineer had hacked into our systems, ensuring that our ESPs would not interfere with our ability to drift.

As we set off, Yuri explained that we would be doing a lot of driving, and that the most important thing was to focus on looking where we wanted to go, rather than where we didn't want to end up. He warned us about the dangers of hitting a ditch, and encouraged us to look farther ahead down the road. I have to say, it's amazing how much of a difference this makes when you're actually out there driving.

One of the most challenging aspects of the program was learning to handle our cars in slippery conditions. Our instructor told us that traction control systems can be a real obstacle when it comes to drifting, but that with the right adjustments, we could overcome them. He explained that by disabling ESP and traction control, we could unlock the full potential of our cars.

As we made our way through the course, Yuri pointed out that this was not just about driving fast, but also about learning how to drive precisely and carefully. He encouraged us to take the time to study the corners, to anticipate where they would turn, and to make adjustments accordingly. It's amazing how much of a difference this makes when you're actually out there on the track.

One of the most impressive things about this program was the attention to detail that our instructors provided. They took the time to explain everything, from the mechanics of drifting to the art of driving. They were patient and encouraging, offering words of wisdom and advice as we navigated the course.

For me, the highlight of the day was when I managed to drift around a cone. It was exhilarating, and I couldn't believe how much sideways action my car was able to generate. Yuri and Jacob were both impressed, and encouraged me to keep practicing.

As we finished up our driving session, Yuri and Jacob asked us what we thought of the program. I have to say, it was an experience like no other. The most important thing for me was that we had so much drive time, which allowed me to focus on my drifting skills. I also appreciated the attention to detail provided by our instructors, who took the time to explain everything and offer advice when needed.

In conclusion, this winter driving program was an absolute blast. It was challenging, but rewarding, and it gave me the opportunity to learn new skills and push myself to new heights. If you ever get the chance to attend a winter driving program like this, I highly recommend it. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enI'm hearing a Jakob Fugger trip 2019 AMG winter sporting this is the best we are drifting Angie's on a frozen lake in Gimli Manitoba do they only do this in two places Gimli Manitoba and Sweden yeah so they actually open this one in Canada a little bit central for everybody yeah it's a lot easier to get you for y'all Americans yeah yeah exactly oh yes I feel like the drift King right now URI so there's three levels of this from driving experience and we're on the pro one right now so it's multiple days but we're only here for one so we're gonna try to get in as much as possible yeah so it starts at about forty five hundred dollars and goes all the way up to just under nine thousand dollars depending on how many days you want to go for Canadian yes so we will be driving east sixty three asses which we're driving right now unfortunately not wagons six hundred horsepower though cla45 AMG S which are three hundred and seventy-five horsepower they're all-wheel drive the front bias spoiler alert some of the trickiest cars here yeah actually though and then we've got c63 s's which are rear-wheel drive with about 500 horsepower and those are the trickiest but pretty much everything here is non-stop fun and the best part about this program you're not really learning at the pro level you're pretty much just here to enjoy yourself from multiple days oh you're definitely learning I've learned a lot since I've been here for about one day but compared to like a different driving experience you don't do a slalom you don't learn how to do one turn you pretty much get on the track right away and start driving we started at night yeah they teach you theory though which is good because you basically need to know car control to be able to do all this stuff and we kind of already know that so we did night on the first night when we rolled in which was pretty intimidating yeah it was but it was so much fun still we both crashed on one of our first laps yes we did I had to get towed out so I got a little stamp cut out of my AMG yeah thing I still didn't get towed out so I don't have any stamps yet this means I'm a failure it's okay I'll probably have them by the end of the day no this is so fun dude I've almost linked most of these corners so far so right now we are in the e63 s and we're ripping around we're learning to do break initiations this is mostly a rear bias all-wheel drive system yeah I feel were the most comfortable in this car just because I understand exactly what it's going to do at most part see there's brake initiation a little bit of understeer off the brakes and then the back comes around and correctly with a little bit of power and there you go and then we've got the drone out we've got the 360 camera out so if you see some whacky camera angles yeah we got welcome we got some slow-mo out as well but I really like that 360 camera guys let us know what you guys think in the comments should we use it more or should we just do more drifting this is the best like I love this these are heavy cars and you really notice it in the e63 as compared to all the other cars so this is a 4matic plus which is like Yuri said a rear biased Oh nailed it nailed it dude dude both hands on the wheel yes yes sorry look at that break initiation look where you want to go I want to go right there that's where I'm looking that's where I'm looking so these AMG's have gnarly gnarly front bumper so when you get into the snow you don't ruin the car and they plow them extra white here and they taper the sides so when you hit a wall or a bank you don't get stuck stuck you kind of get stuck you might need to get towed out yeah that's fine they have a tree wagon for that but it's more chill than the sweden course apparently yes I love these 63s I understand the balance of this car so well you know I really want one of these in a wagon right yeah yeah I found that this one's a little trickier to figure out then the CLA I feel way more comfortable in that powering through but this one is very fun and it's a lot easier than this c63 s yes it is okay if you have the money to do one of these courses just do it yeah if you find one room save up a little bit extra and make sure you do this yeah you can talk to your dealership you can go to the website not that we're selling this but it is amazing to do and they actually do learn a lot and you can just be a goon like a legal goon you can't do this anywhere else and the cool thing is a lot of the other guys and girls on this trip are just like random customers who love driving have sports cars do racing and want to do the ice experience yeah you don't actually have to own an AMG to be able to do this course now we're going to do a Gymkhana challenge where we go through cones drift around go through a box and all that stuff see who's faster what he said Gymkhana is so much fun we just went on one second power through a trust here outside here's a figure 8 yeah okay now I got to go through this okay right through a little bit too much time in there huh all right let's see how I did that was so much fun wow that is hard all right I didn't say much but whatever it's hard to concentrate your ease driving the cla45 AMG fully sideways which I said was the most fun and it is yeah so the difference with this car is that its front biased all-wheel drive so the front wheels end up pulling you through the corners and you get maximum drift angle in this car versus all the other cars so this is the only four-cylinder of the bunch the rest are v8s yeah do you mind it at all honestly here not at all like not at all so let's talk about the studded tires we got out here ok so they are up to 400 studs per tire which is so many studs we've actually had some experience on studded tires before and they're about a hundred to 200 studs retire at the Porsche ice driving experience and at our continental event to watch that video yes that tires are the best and here's the thing we're actually on a frozen lake you forget until you get a close-up yeah and it's also kind of funny seeing the GPS units manufactured in the middle of a lake so the lake thickness is about a hundred and thirty-five centimeters because you can actually land a full jumbo jet on here like a 737 or something oh by the way give me was the town where some guy landed a jet that had no fuel on a runway that was being used by guys drag race oh you have a Gimli glider we actually did a simulation and we both landed it now let's talk about the looks the front bumper its carbon Kevlar yeah so it's a full front bumper with a skid plate underneath it and it's so strong so you can actually smash some snow banks not that you should but you can just in case they look so bad as I would love to see these unlike the normal roads but then I guess it's probably not like pedestrian safe yeah probably no no you probably like break some ankles with these you look out you see a bunch of AMD's drifting it's like the coolest atmosphere ever it is it's hilarities you see them in the background everywhere you see the ice huts like it's such an experience here some more driving things I want to mention if you're not the most experienced you don't have the word because you don't actually have to use the paddles we've had these an auto the whole time and they've been fantastic yeah and normally we're goons on the street like straight into race mode no we've actually dialed it back to Sport and Sport Plus because the throttles a little bit too touchy and race mode and we're comfort suspension because you want all that momentum exactly but we are still goons with loud exhaust mode because you know straight and you have to use your brakes so much more than I thought this whole of course is pretty much using brakes to get the turn started and then cash your way through what the most fun part about the driving the CLA is that it's just pure throttle like once you have it in a drift it's just pure throttle maximum oversteer angle like this exactly like this there's the timer so we're driving on several different tracks today and they're actually modeled after real race tracks around the world so there's the MA there's Watkins Glen and there's Interlagos it is so cool oh and there's also a final my favourite one which we haven't actually done yet the white hell where they combine everything and make it like a white Nurburgring cause it's all snow oh my god this is it too much confidence okay I can't afford another staff in my card yeah and let's cut this up cool 360 VR camera and then we'll be in the c63 s next and now in the 500 horsepower rear-wheel drive c63 s so this is the last event of our day we're not on the full program right now we're just doing a one-day thing so we're gonna try to get the most right now and really send this thing right out this is the best rear-wheel drive is best wheel drive but it's also hardest wheel drive to actually master but it feels so easy with the studded tires it does sure wish we had some Continentals though this is so good once you get it so we're learning how to do big circles and small circles with the rear wheel drive it's a lot of fun cuz it's like a real weight balanced dance yeah exactly it's really hard to get but once you do get it it's so fun and they teach you brake initiation to start it so that you don't throw out too much you got nothing left and they're always right about this brake thing that's the biggest thing I learned from this whole trip use brakes to start drifts keep just going anything to do with drifting it's mostly braking I think and followed by looking where you want to go not where you want to end up which is not in a ditch so you got to look farther ahead down the road and then usually enough they're just like I did right there around this cone and I'm looking down there and no problems let's talk about traction really quickly okay so Mercedes actually flies an engineer out from Germany to disable traction control so that I can do this donut which I accidentally just did or keeping that and recovering from that spin so they fly a guy in to hack the traction control and all he does is make sure that the ESP doesn't react when you're on the brakes because by law when you hit the brakes ESP has to turn off even if traction control is all the way off in a car so it still doesn't solve the problem with that AMG traction control that we don't like on normal roads that's true we'll work on that but for now this is all right well we have full traction off and it is perfect out here yes you can also do it with ESP support but I wouldn't recommend it because I haven't tried it and I don't want to what if you're new to this you should probably do that but if you're not new to drifting or definitely keep it off so to sum up the day Yuri which one did you like the most - the c63 s the e63 s or the CLA the e63 s was my least favorite and the c63 s in the CLA were tied for my favourite I think I have just made the c63 s my favorite because it's the most challenging and I like to be challenged I like to learn new stuff I like to screw up but I also like to learn why I screwed up and that's why I like the c63 s the most but the CLA you got to go so much faster there's a little bit cheater mode but it's like so much fun so easily the CLA is easily the most fun no arguments for me there but I just like this one the most because drifty drift and challenge yeah I feel like I've betrayed the e63 s but it's not a wagon so I love that it's 63 s - oh and we should probably mention that when you do sign up for this everything is included except your flight so they actually put you up in a nice hotel and include all the dinners and stuff - so yeah just another reminder this is the place to go for Americans North Americans Canadians Mexicans a lot closer than Sweden yeah I mean European people can still come here they're very welcome but just a little bit closer for North American we do have some people here right now who did the Swedish program and now they're doing this program too so let's end the day off this is the best day I've had driving so comparing this to that other driving program we did that other one felt like it was more learning step by step and this was more of a just drive around all day lots of linking it up and they teach you along the way per century this guy these six I saw 96 there Wow your constructor right yes you can talk while drifting I can go commies so for me I prefer this one and since it's like such a long experience I think there's just more driving time more seat time I enjoyed this more yeah I just like how much sideways action you get and it's just non-stop like there's so much drive time in this program like that's the biggest thing that I notice is like yeah back in the car five minute break back in the car it's amazing but the most important thing is if you get a chance to do any winter driving program do that winter driving program because they're all the best they're all the most fun sliding cars is the best thing you can possibly do yeah and doing it in parking lots is not the same we've done that when we grew up and we learned a lot of this stuff but it's just not the same link corners yeah can't do any of that stuff it's a whole different if you ever get the chance I highly recommend it and on that note don't forget to subscribe hit the notification valve check out patreon.com/scishow to membership wheels of a teespring store but I'm also in the middle of a drift so it's kind of hard to talk I'm Yuri I'm Jacob we're going for a drive don't forget subscribe subscribe right now subscribe we didn't even we didn't do that and also let us know if you sign up for one of the winter driving courses we'd love to know when you're going where you're going and how you liked it yeah maybe we'll see you there too because we'd like to come back always to every winter driving course ever yeah Lambo I'm looking at you too\n"
