The Oneplus 5: A Flagship Smartphone that Puts Form and Function First
This is a flagship smartphone, but it's not a flagship smartphone like we're used to at the moment. Apple, Samsung, and LG often come out with extremely expensive and very highly specced smartphones packed full of different features. But the Oneplus 5 is a different story. It packs in all the desirable specs you want without adding all that extra garnish. You don't always use every feature, and sometimes less is more.
The Oneplus 5 has got a Snapdragon 805 processor inside that's the same one that's used inside the Samsung Galaxy s8. This processor provides fast performance and power efficiency. It also has eight gigabytes of RAM, yes, a gigabyte that's pretty much the most junior in a smartphone today. The phone comes in two models: midnight black and slate grey. The midnight black version has 128 gigabytes of storage, while the slate grey model has 64 gigabytes of memory. However, we recommend going for the slightly more expensive midnight black version.
One of the biggest features on the Oneplus 5 is its dual lens camera. This camera works in a similar way to Samsung's camera. It has both a standard lens and a portrait lens telephoto by the side. The telephoto lens gives you a two times hybrid zoom, which also provides that desirable "ok" effect when you take a photo. For example, we took this phone out for a spin recently, and you can see how great it performs - the blurred background with what's in front is in focus, and you can also zoom in twice the amount you would do normally without any loss of quality.
Another standout feature of the Oneplus 5 is its operating system. It uses Android 7.0 lunar and comes with the Oxygen UI from Oneplus on top. This user interface is very simple to use, reminding us basically off Stand. It's extremely fast thanks not only to the processor but also some clever optimizations working behind the scenes to prioritize the apps you use most. We really like the way this phone operates.
The phone itself has a 5.5 inch 1080p screen, which is exactly what we want in terms of display specs. Unlike some other recent smartphones that have been coming out with less-than-ideal displays, such as flashing ads or lower resolutions. The price of the Oneplus 5 is also very competitive. It starts at $490 and comes with a significant saving compared to many top-range flagship phones from other manufacturers.
We've got a version available here with a slightly higher RAM and storage capacity than some of our other competitors, making it an even more compelling choice. The phone itself weighs around 150 odd grams and has a very thin profile just 7.25 millimeters, making it extremely lightweight and comfortable to hold in your hand. However, we do think the case is going to be a good thing on this device because of its slight slippage.
The Oneplus 5 will be available for purchase starting around June 21st, so make sure you mark that down if you're interested in getting your hands on one. It will be available in the UK and US, as well as various other places across Europe. We've got a full review of the phone coming up soon on Digital Trends.
