going to use here is the tablet projector all in one device so this can be used to video call it can use to interact with family members from away they can help you interact with it here it also comes with instructions and a power cord the first thing she picked up was the mat so this is what you're gonna put down so that you can play on the table or the counter and then it also um shipped with some tangram bits so we're gonna be using these for different interactive video elements and stuff like that open it all right so here it says that we need to place it on a hard surface like a table or counter top it has a protective layer let's take that off all right that was on there pretty good so up here is the projector so that's going to project down over here we have microphones we have a camera right here is that my little ejector there is yeah there is a privacy shutter so it can close off the camera right there here we have the display a speaker down here and then we have the power button volume buttons and the power port is actually on the back here that we're going to plug it in so here we're going to take out the mat all right so it has this little notch up at the top that will fit in the projector right there and then plug it into an outlet and follow the instructions on screen and then we will need to download the amazon glow app for this all right now let's go ahead and plug it in what are we gonna do oh let's find out okay so over here on the tablet it's saying we do need to download the amazon glow app and then i'm going to sign in with my amazon account now the first time going into this app you're going to set up your profile so i'm brett bristow so i'm going to set up my profile and we'll set up kids profiles later but here i'm going to select setup amazon glow device and then we'll connect it to the internet so it can function during setup you will link your phone number and this is how you will actually share your account with others so once we have our profile set up we're going to start device setup and here we do need to have bluetooth turned on and here it found the device and then we're going to connect it to our wi-fi what's our wi-fi password i don't know what you don't know huh hope somebody does and now it's asking us to add my kids profile i've actually already added them i'm using the amazon kids plus app but here you can go through and add their name and their birthday and then while we're doing this it is downloading an update on the amazon glow next it's giving us an option to add friends and family so this is where you could invite a family member so that they can set up their account to be a partner account so that you can then interact with each other we'll do that in a minute and when purchasing this device you do get one year of amazon kids plus that comes with a subscription if you let that subscription expire you will only have access to video calling and purchase content on the amazon glow and now on my phone it's asking if i allow it to use my microphone and my camera so that you can do video calls from the phone but you do need a tablet to have the full support now that we have our amazon account link down here at the bottom you can see the different kids so each person has a profile and then you can set up who they can communicate so if you want them to communicate with grandma grandpa or whoever you will have the access here in the app to take control of that so today we're going to go under gwen's profile then is what i'm going to do is i'm going to go to the menu here and select friends or family and here we have my profile but i'm going to add friends or family so i'm actually going to add grandpa so that he can connect to gwen over this device so i'm going to invite an existing contact and then i can choose who is able to contact grandpa can i contact grandpa and then here it's asking what they call grandpa so we just say grandpa and then next i'm going to send him a download link so that he can get the amazon glow app to communicate with them that's what i'm talking about i got a text from brett i tap on it says get the app so i get the amazon glow app it says it's best on a tablet so now i can go in here and on grandpa's account we're going to do the same thing create our profile but here we're going to select connect with someone who has a device and then once we do that we're going to verify his profile and everything looks good click continue and now it's asking for microphone and camera access so that we can use this device to communicate now you do need to have an ios 14 or newer device or android 8.0 or newer and in order to receive calls on this tablet you will want to allow for notifications so that those calls from the echo glow will come through now his device has been set up so down here at the bottom he can select a child that he would want to contact and then he can select the connect button but we'll contact grandpa after we test it out first so now we're just going to wait for this to update and then we'll start playing as soon as it booted up she was ready to go and start playing as you can see it's very natural similar to tablet she has used but the one thing is the press is a little bit different a tablet is a little more responsive where here she was pushing really hard but you can just do a soft press to get this going so andy was a very lucky boy he had many different toys but his favorite one to play with was sheriff woody cool there was something very special about woody and all the other toys that andy didn't know about the green army soldiers hid in a plant and reported back to woody each present that andy opened nine eight seven suddenly he heard was that woody buzz you're flying woody exclaimed this isn't flying buzz replied this is falling with style you like that one that one's cool that was pretty fun i'm gonna read all of it again okay i convinced her to try out the tangram bits and so there's about six different levels with five or six activities in each and you're supposed to use these and create the different character that's here so here we have a dinosaur and once we line it up it will automatically detect it and turn it into the animal that you have created we did it clear the tiles to finish okay move it out of the way let's see what we made what do we make a crocodile a dinosaur now to start a video call with a pre-approved family member here on the top screen you will see the pictures pop up so here you can tap on who you want to call and then it will call their device and you select accept to start the video chat do you have a jig no i got a goldfish so i'm going to choose that i got another one do you have a crab cart i do so here on my tablet i have my version of the game board you can also use this to help control and choose what you are going to do together here i can also move her camera around in case it's in the way and if i tap on it i then have the option to swap the camera around as well as mute the video or audio or end the call now let's test this out with grandpa he will be calling gwen from his ipad hello hi grandpa how are you would you like me to read you a book can you see down in there i can see good night moon when working with a partner you both have access to scroll throughs you want do you want me to read goodnight and moon to you there it is go ahead and turn the page in the great green room there was a telephone and there were three little bears sitting on chairs and a little toy house and a young mouse mouse forgot he can't fly his foot is black and blue in the cafeteria we see lots of doctors and nurses on their lunch breaks dr tate takes us around the hospital dear grandpa did you have fun all right we've been playing with this for a little bit what do you think gwen good what's your favorite game we played so far was it go fish or drawing or reading a book what's your favorite thing we did so far um the fifth game the fish game what about did you like talking with grandpa no no so far so good we're gonna let some of the other kids try it out and come back with our favorite things daddy look whoa you're doing so much now since you taught me i'm really good at her this goes here and then the last piece goes here you did it they just got a huge piece connecting did we puzzle okay now you go so as you can see so far the amazon glow is actually a pretty fun device for kids and adults to enjoy so now let me talk you through some of the other things we've noticed as we've been using this for the last week now first off there are two modes you can have it completely off where nobody can call you or you can't make any calls or you have a sleep mode and sleep mode turns off the screens and then if grandpa calls it's able to pop up on screen and you can receive that call so right now it's completely turned off that means no lights are on but if i come over here and press the power button the power button turns green indicating it's turning on and it's going to boot up all right now our device is on so next you're going to choose your profile let's go ahead and stick with gwen we're going to select start and then the touchscreen turns on now if she's done playing all she needs to do is press the power button and then it turns off both screens but at this time that's when she can receive a call and begin interacting with somebody else over the globe if she wants to come back and play she can then simply push the power button and it will turn on if you do need to change the volume you have the volume controls over here that increase the volume on the device you can go into the settings and adjust the wi-fi you can change the sounds here if you need to so you can adjust all the sounds or you have the video chat sound or sound effects and that's pretty much all the real settings there and when you are completely done and want to turn off the device if you hold down the power button then you will see a pop-up on screen to power off the device so that then you can no longer receive phone calls and so on at any time if you do want to mute your mic and camera on the amazon glow device you do have the privacy shutter where you can just swipe this down it shuts off the screen and then it mutes the camera as well as the mic and then you can push this back up and now it's ready to go so first off let's talk about this screen here you can see that even when we're playing in bright daylight it still is very functional the touchscreen everything is able to work this of course is going to be a little better if the room gets a bit darker you're going to see the screen a little better here you can see that we can see the screen but if i simply turn off this powerful light that i have over here the screen is a little more bright and vibrant to see and easier to work with now as for the touch screen it actually works pretty good the kids are able to navigate through it without too many issues the only time there may be issues if they have their hand here and they're trying to touch over here and they accidentally touch on their left hand also if they had a sweater or something on that they were resting their hand on the pad it didn't work well so if you move how to work this game and then if they were touching this whenever you touch this it does make it so you cannot interact with it and if for some reason you can't use this it still allows you to play but as you can see without the pad it is not as bright so definitely having the pad is recommended and i think this will last a pretty long time gwen had some sticky fingers here and there it's very easy to wipe off hopefully this does come as a separate accessory you could buy if you do wear this down but i think it will actually last a lot longer than i thought it might in the beginning now the touch screen we did have one issue we were playing during the middle of the day it was kind of warm in the room and there was one spot that we could not interact with for whatever reason it just would not let us touch that one area we turned off the device tried it a little bit later after it cooled down and it was working again so i'm not sure if that issue will happen again but i did notice that once now one thing you will notice when using the amazon glow is you will hear a fan noise if we're quiet right now you can slightly hear it i have a lot of fans going on in here but one is this fan noise but that really kicks on when you are doing a video chat and you're using the camera on the glow device size so if you do want to calm down um the fan you can turn off the camera on your glow device and that helps the device kind of cool down doesn't have to work as hard sending that video feed but then i'm still able to see grandpa on the other end on my screen here now let's talk about the different content that's available with amazon glow so what you see here is kind of what you get now there is some synchronization with the kids plus app from amazon so if you go into the amazon kids plus app sign into your account you can read books and stuff on your phone and some of those books will sync with this and show up as a recent book that you have read the age of your child will also depend on what books they can see the younger kids can't see the same books that the older kids can see now some of the chapter books are not compatible with the amazon glow it would be cool if there were more books available but let me show you how you can find the full selection available here on the glow so here we have recent i can scroll through the recent here we have some featured items here we have the games now if you want to see all the games are available we can just select see all and then it's going to take us to all the games one problem is they're not labeled so you just kind of learn this is matching puzzle we have checkers chess and go fish and then down here a lot of the other games are more just drawing games so it opens up something like tic-tac-toe if we go into tic-tac-toe here it opens up the drawing game but it shows a tic-tac-toe board so you can then just draw and play tic-tac-toe or whatever right on the board kids quickly learn what games they like and don't like to play and which are a little more fun so then if we go back here to the home screen let's go down now we have an art row we have recommended books we have disney we have mattel nickelodeon and sesame street let's go ahead and go to books so recommended books if we hit select all at first i thought there was only a few books because we read toy story like so many times but here if you scroll through we can see there are all these books available that we can read on here now like i said before we have read a ton since we got the glow every day my daughter wants to read a book so it's really fun that it's interactive and i like how some of them are a little more interactive we read toy story and every time you click and you can find the little moving things and we didn't even find all of them so we got to read it again to see if we can find all the moving items so let's go ahead and read a little frozen story here so now it has enabled what's called bubble mode so let me show you what that's about so bubble mode allows you to simply interact down here with the controls so that it can then pop up different things on screen so that you know what to read because you can see the text is a little small here if we push this that allows us to read a little bit better then we can click next it will go to the next one if you tap on this you can then adjust the bubble mode so we can adjust the text size here we can make it smaller or we can go in here and make it bigger now i do like bubble mode because instead of like swiping all the way to this edge and turning the page this makes it a little easier to switch the pages just like that but i have found that every once in a while a bubble is not detected from the book so it might skip over items of the book so you can click the x to close bubble mode and then if you tap right here it will actually switch pages which is a lot easier than swiping all the way over to switch the page you can just simply tap right here and it goes to the next page or it goes back a page which is pretty cool and then here you have a few other options so this allows you to kind of touch your finger so that they can see where you're reading you do have this flashlight mode where it dims everything else but where you're reading and then you also have this rainbow color trail mode that you can read a line and they could follow and either user on each end can use this when you're doing this with a partner on the other end now the only issue we've had while reading is sometimes when we're turning the page on toy story this little book icon loading icon would pop up and it wouldn't ever go away so what we'd have to do is tap up here and then we'd have to go back to the previous page so that you can see the book loading icon but there we went to the previous page and then we could turn the page so that did freeze every once in a while not a huge issue just something you might have to fiddle with if you do have an issue there so hopefully that selection of books will continue to grow over time that's pretty much what the device can do now that is one thing it would be nice to have more games available but hopefully that selection does continue to grow you know if you compare this to a tablet the tablet is going to have a lot more games but the benefit of this is it's simple i can let gwen or whoever play on this pretty much as much as they want without them going to videos or playing games that i don't know what's happening and also there's no ads i know that on the tablet they're playing a game and an ad pops up and then they click on it and all this stuff goes on and they get into the completely wrong place and i have to fix it that has not been an issue here with the amazon glow which i think is a great thing that it is limited to what's available here they can't get somewhere where they're not supposed to be and everything on here is child safe now the next thing to talk about is using this with a partner device now we mostly use this in-house where somebody was using the glow device and then somebody was using the ipad at home if you're in the same room there's going to be an echo between both devices now to get around this you can mute the microphone on the ipad and then you can mute the microphone on the glow device if you don't mute both there will be a delay in audio and it sounds really bad and it's not fun to play together but once you mute the microphone then you can both sit next to each other and one person can play the matching game over here and another person can play the matching game here and that makes it really fun where each of you have your own screen instead of crowding over and messing up each other's touches it's fun to be able to play right next to each other some games do require to have a partner but other games you don't need to use the partner and then you can simply just each use the touch screen i'm taking turns on the glow device which actually works pretty well all right what are your first impressions of the amazon glow it works perfect now after having mr bristow try this out as a teacher for 35 years uh he was very impressed with the device the only problem i see is you have a limitation of what games that they have on there right it would be nice if you could get any game on there that you wanted now one of the other options that i would like to see added to this is the ability to set time limits so um grandpa he was getting calls it all kinds of times so in the morning after her school in the evening there wasn't really a set time when she could and couldn't call him so if there was some way where we could allow her to call in the evening or during the day it would be nice if there were slightly more parental controls there so that he wasn't being interrupted at all times but that is one of the best things that she is able to communicate with him she can come in here touch the grandpa button and then instantly she is connected to grandpa and she can talk to him um and have a conversation no matter where he is so if he's at home it's going to be best because he's got his ipad now i think that's one of the coolest things about this is that grandpa we can talk to him no matter where he is how's it going and then when i'm done i can click the x up there and it ends the conversation there or you can even push the side to end that conversation so really i think this is such a great unique device that is way easier to use than having two ipads trying to facetime each other and play a game um this just makes it so easy to do and it's very kid-friendly and easy to work with so if you are in the market for something like this where you want to communicate better with a grandma or grandpa or another family member or a friend across the country i think the amazon glow is honestly one of the best ways to be able to do this if you have younger kids now of course this is a brand new product the first generation of this type of device so over time i'm sure we will see all kinds of improvements come to the interface as well as different games and books to read but as a amazon first product i think this actually has done a really good job i've never seen my daughter ask me to read so many books in a week and she's never been able to communicate with grandpa so much and so that's where this device really wins and is unique compared to any other device that's available now if you are looking to pick up one of these you can get one but it is an amazon first product and is what that means is you do need to go to the link in the description and request an lunch breaks dr tate takes us around the hospital dear grandpa did you have fun all right we've been playing with this for a little bit what do you think gwen good what's your favorite game we played so far was it go fish or drawing or reading a book what's your favorite thing we did so far um the fifth game the fish game what about did you like talking with grandpa no no so far so good we're gonna let some of the other kids try it out and come back with our favorite things daddy look whoa you're doing so much now since you taught me i'm really good at her this goes here and then the last piece goes here you did it they just got a huge piece connecting did we puzzle okay now you go so as you can see so far the amazon glow is actually a pretty fun device for kids and adults to enjoy so now let me talk you through some of the other things we've noticed as we've been using this for the last week now first off there are two modes you can have it completely off where nobody can call you or you can't make any calls or you have a sleep mode and sleep mode turns off the screens and then if grandpa calls it's able to pop up on screen and you can receive that call so right now it's completely turned off that means no lights are on but if i come over here and press the power button the power button turns green indicating it's turning on and it's going to boot up all right now our device is on so next you're going to choose your profile let's go ahead and stick with gwen we're going to select start and then the touchscreen turns on now if she's done playing all she needs to do is press the power button and then it turns off both screens but at this time that's when she can receive a call and begin interacting with somebody else over the globe if she wants to come back and play she can then simply push the power button and it will turn on if you do need to change the volume you have the volume controls over here that increase the volume on the device you can go into the settings and adjust the wi-fi you can change the sounds here if you need to so you can adjust all the sounds or you have the video chat sound or sound effects and that's pretty much all the real settings there and when you are completely done and want to turn off the device if you hold down the power button then you will see a pop-up on screen to power off the device so that then you can no longer receive phone calls and so on at any time if you do want to mute your mic and camera on the amazon glow device you do have the privacy shutter where you can just swipe this down it shuts off the screen and then it mutes the camera as well as the mic and then you can push this back up and now it's ready to go so first off let's talk about this screen here you can see that even when we're playing in bright daylight it still is very functional the touchscreen everything is able to work this of course is going to be a little better if the room gets a bit darker you're going to see the screen a little better here you can see that we can see the screen but if i simply turn off this powerful light that i have over here the screen is a little more bright and vibrant to see and easier to work with now as for the touch screen it actually works pretty good the kids are able to navigate through it without too many issues the only time there may be issues if they have their hand here and they're trying to touch over here and they accidentally touch on their left hand also if they had a sweater or something on that they were resting their hand on the pad it didn't work well so if you move how to work this game and then if they were touching this whenever you touch this it does make it so you cannot interact with it and if for some reason you can't use this it still allows you to play but as you can see without the pad it is not as bright so definitely having the pad is recommended and i think this will last a pretty long time gwen had some sticky fingers here and there it's very easy to wipe off hopefully this does come as a separate accessory you could buy if you do wear this down but i think it will actually last a lot longer than i thought it might in the beginning now the touch screen we did have one issue we were playing during the middle of the day it was kind of warm in the room and there was one spot that we could not interact with for whatever reason it just would not let us touch that one area we turned off the device tried it a little bit later after it cooled down and it was working again so i'm not sure if that issue will happen again but i did notice that once now one thing you will notice when using the amazon glow is you will hear a fan noise if we're quiet right now you can slightly hear it i have a lot of fans going on in here but one is this fan noise but that really kicks on when you are doing a video chat and you're using the camera on the glow device size so if you do want to calm down um the fan you can turn off the camera on your glow device and that helps the device kind of cool down doesn't have to work as hard sending that video feed but then i'm still able to see grandpa on the other end on my screen here now let's talk about the different content that's available with amazon glow so what you see here is kind of what you get now there is some synchronization with the kids plus app from amazon so if you go into the amazon kids plus app sign into your account you can read books and stuff on your phone and some of those books will sync with this and show up as a recent book that you have read the age of your child will also depend on what books they can see the younger kids can't see the same books that the older kids can see now some of the chapter books are not compatible with the amazon glow it would be cool if there were more books available but let me show you how you can find the full selection available here on the glow so here we have recent i can scroll through the recent here we have some featured items here we have the games now if you want to see all the games are available we can just select see all and then it's going to take us to all the games one problem is they're not labeled so you just kind of learn this is matching puzzle we have checkers chess and go fish and then down here a lot of the other games are more just drawing games so it opens up something like tic-tac-toe if we go into tic-tac-toe here it opens up the drawing game but it shows a tic-tac-toe board so you can then just draw and play tic-tac-toe or whatever right on the board kids quickly learn what games they like and don't like to play and which are a little more fun so then if we go back here to the home screen let's go down now we have an art row we have recommended books we have disney we have mattel nickelodeon and sesame street let's go ahead and go to books so recommended books if we hit select all at first i thought there was only a few books because we read toy story like so many times but here if you scroll through we can see there are all these books available that we can read on here now like i said before we have read a ton since we got the glow every day my daughter wants to read a book so it's really fun that it's interactive and i like how some of them are a little more interactive we read toy story and every time you click and you can find the little moving things and we didn't even find all of them so we got to read it again to see if we can find all the moving items so let's go ahead and read a little frozen story here so now it has enabled what's called bubble mode so let me show you what that's about so bubble mode allows you to simply interact down here with the controls so that it can then pop up different things on screen so that you know what to read because you can see the text is a little small here if we push this that allows us to read a little bit better then we can click next it will go to the next one if you tap on this you can then adjust the bubble mode so we can adjust the text size here we can make it smaller or we can go in here and make it bigger now i do like bubble mode because instead of like swiping all the way to this edge and turning the page this makes it a little easier to switch the pages just like that but i have found that every once in a while a bubble is not detected from the book so it might skip over items of the book so you can click the x to close bubble mode and then if you tap right here it will actually switch pages which is a lot easier than swiping all the way over to switch the page you can just simply tap right here and it goes to the next page or it goes back a page which is pretty cool and then here you have a few other options so this allows you to kind of touch your finger so that they can see where you're reading you do have this flashlight mode where it dims everything else but where you're reading and then you also have this rainbow color trail mode that you can read a line and they could follow and either user on each end can use this when you're doing this with a partner on the other end now the only issue we've had while reading is sometimes when we're turning the page on toy story this little book icon loading icon would pop up and it wouldn't ever go away so what we'd have to do is tap up here and then we'd have to go back to the previous page so that you can see the book loading icon but there we went to the previous page and then we could turn the page so that did freeze every once in a while not a huge issue just something you might have to fiddle with if you do have an issue there so hopefully that selection of books will continue to grow over time that's pretty much what the device can do now that is one thing it would be nice to have more games available but hopefully that selection does continue to grow you know if you compare this to a tablet the tablet is going to have a lot more games but the benefit of this is it's simple i can let gwen or whoever play on this pretty much as much as they want without them going to videos or playing games that i don't know what's happening and also there's no ads i know that on the tablet they're playing a game and an ad pops up and then they click on it and all this stuff goes on and they get into the completely wrong place and i have to fix it that has not been an issue here with the amazon glow which i think is a great thing that it is limited to what's available here they can't get somewhere where they're not supposed to be and everything on here is child safe now the next thing to talk about is using this with a partner device now we mostly use this in-house where somebody was using the glow device and then somebody was using the ipad at home if you're in the same room there's going to be an echo between both devices now to get around this you can mute the microphone on the ipad and then you can mute the microphone on the glow device if you don't mute both there will be a delay in audio and it sounds really bad and it's not fun to play together but once you mute the microphone then you can both sit next to each other and one person can play the matching game over here and another person can play the matching game here and that makes it really fun where each of you have your own screen instead of crowding over and messing up each other's touches it's fun to be able to play right next to each other some games do require to have a partner but other games you don't need to use the partner and then you can simply just each use the touch screen i'm taking turns on the glow device which actually works pretty well all right what are your first impressions of the amazon glow it works perfect now after having mr bristow try this out as a teacher for 35 years uh he was very impressed with the device the only problem i see is you have a limitation of what games that they have on there right it would be nice if you could get any game on there that you wanted now one of the other options that i would like to see added to this is the ability to set time limits so um grandpa he was getting calls it all kinds of times so in the morning after her school in the evening there wasn't really a set time when she could and couldn't call him so if there was some way where we could allow her to call in the evening or during the day it would be nice if there were slightly more parental controls there so that he wasn't being interrupted at all times but that is one of the best things that she is able to communicate with him she can come in here touch the grandpa button and then instantly she is connected to grandpa and she can talk to him um and have a conversation no matter where he is so if he's at home it's going to be best because he's got his ipad now i think that's one of the coolest things about this is that grandpa we can talk to him no matter where he is how's it going and then when i'm done i can click the x up there and it ends the conversation there or you can even push the side to end that conversation so really i think this is such a great unique device that is way easier to use than having two ipads trying to facetime each other and play a game um this just makes it so easy to do and it's very kid-friendly and easy to work with so if you are in the market for something like this where you want to communicate better with a grandma or grandpa or another family member or a friend across the country i think the amazon glow is honestly one of the best ways to be able to do this if you have younger kids now of course this is a brand new product the first generation of this type of device so over time i'm sure we will see all kinds of improvements come to the interface as well as different games and books to read but as a amazon first product i think this actually has done a really good job i've never seen my daughter ask me to read so many books in a week and she's never been able to communicate with grandpa so much and so that's where this device really wins and is unique compared to any other device that's available now if you are looking to pick up one of these you can get one but it is an amazon first product
