Samsung's Next Unpacked Event: What to Expect
Samsung's next unpacked event is just around the corner, and it's likely that new devices will be announced on July 26th. As with most tech companies, Samsung doesn't specify which new products are coming before it's ready to announce them. However, based on leaks, rumors, and years of covering Samsung product launches, we can make some educated guesses about what might be in store.
One thing that is certain is that new foldable phones will likely be the main focus of the event. Samsung usually announces new versions of the Galaxy Z fold and Galaxy Z flip around the August time frame, so it's unlikely that this year will be any different. The new phones are expected to be called the Galaxy Z fold 5 and the Galaxy Z flip 5, with reports from Korean news outlets such as The Elect and ET News suggesting that the Galaxy Z fold 5 could have a new hinge that results in a thinner design. For the Galaxy Z flip 5, we might see a bigger cover screen that measures 3.4 inches, making it about the same size as the one on the Motorola Razer Plus.
Aside from design changes, the new phones are also likely to have routine hardware upgrades such as better cameras and new processors. Foldable phones are usually the big focus of Samsung's Summer Event, but the company also typically unveils new wearables in August 2022 and August 2021. For example, we saw new versions of the Galaxy watch in previous years, so it wouldn't be a stretch for Samsung to introduce the next galaxy watch, likely called the Galaxy watch 6, at this event. The new watches are expected to run on Samsung's next major software update, called One UI 5, which will bring more health and sleep-oriented features, including more personalized heart rate zones.
Leaks from prolific leaker Alias Ice Universe also suggest that the rotating bezel may make a return in the Galaxy watch 6 lineup. Samsung previously got rid of the physical rotating bezel with the Galaxy watch 5 Pro, but it seems like the company might be backtracking on that decision if the leaks are true. The Galaxy watch isn't the only wearable device that Samsung is expected to unveil at this event. There have been rumors about a new pair of Galaxy buds, which would be an upgrade from the Galaxy buds 2 Pro launched in August 2022 and the Galaxy buds 2 released in August 2021.
Another area where we might see some new products is in the world of tablets. The tech blog Galaxy Club reports that the Galaxy Tab S9 series is in development, which follows a report last year from The Elect saying that Samsung pushed these new tablets to 2023. It wouldn't be surprising to see new tablets arrive sooner rather than later, given that the Galaxy Tab S8 arrived in early 2022. Additionally, Samsung showcased some new concept foldable devices at CES in January, including the Flex Hybrid, which can extend the size of its screen.
Samsung also teased a new mixed reality project in collaboration with Google and QualComm earlier this year. While we haven't heard much more about this project since then, unpacked would be an ideal time to provide more details. Furthermore, since Apple just introduced its first headset, The Vision Pro, in June, Samsung might use this event as an opportunity to show off some of its own mixed reality technology.
Overall, while the exact details are still unclear, it's likely that new foldable phones, wearables, tablets, and possibly even a new pair of Galaxy buds will be announced at Samsung's next unpacked event. As always, we'll have to wait until July 26th to find out for sure what Samsung has in store for us.
