Zagg Speaker Case for iPhone 6 - Review

The Zag Speaker Case: A Convenient Solution for Portable Music Sharing

For those who enjoy sharing their music on the go, meeting the Zag speaker case is an innovative solution to enhance your music-sharing experience. Using the built-in speaker on your iPhone can be a great way to share music with friends, but it doesn't always produce a full or loud enough sound. Lugging around a brick-sized Bluetooth speaker isn't exactly convenient, which is why I created this speaker case. It's a Bluetooth speaker that attaches to your phone for portable audio that's small enough to fit in your pocket.

The Zag speaker case has a two-piece snap-on design. The bumper is a semi-rigid plastic frame that can be used with or without the Bluetooth speaker. This design allows for flexibility and convenience, as you can easily attach or detach the speaker depending on your needs. The iPhone slips easily into the bumper case with a snug and secure fit, thanks to its rubberized rims which provide a decently non-slip grip. The raised rims also allow you to place your phone facedown on a flat surface, protecting it from picking up scratches on either side.

Precisely placed cutouts for the port's mic and speaker, as well as pass-through button covers for the sleep and volume keys, provide easy access to those features. However, the button covers felt a tiny bit loose in the frame and tended to rattle around a bit, which may be a minor inconvenience for some users. The speaker itself consists mainly of an 1800 milliamp hour lithium-ion battery with a metal speaker grille on the back along the bottom. A triangular battery meter button and three control keys for the speaker itself are also present along the base of the speaker. Additionally, you'll find the micro USB port used for charging, adjacent to it, you'll find a full-sized USB port that lets you use the speaker's battery as a battery pack to charge your phone using a lightning cable.

The speaker simply snaps onto the back of the bumper case, allowing you to carry the phone and speaker as a single unit. The diagonal cut out for the camera means you won't get full back coverage, but you also won't have to remove the speaker to snap a photo after turning on the speaker. Connecting over Bluetooth is straightforward, and the sound quality of the speaker is pretty good. It's definitely a step up from the iPhone's built-in speakerphone with louder volume capabilities, decent audio accuracy, and solid Bluetooth connectivity. However, it's not audiophile quality amazing, and at the loudest volumes, you'll likely notice significant distortion and clipping.

Despite this limitation, at moderate levels, the speaker makes sharing your music and a medium-sized space easier, providing up to 12 hours of playback on a single charge that's if you don't use the speaker's battery to charge your phone. Having the speaker attached to the case roughly doubles the thickness and weight of the iPhone, but it's still a more convenient form factor than carrying around a separate Bluetooth speaker. And, as an added bonus, you can always detach it and just use the bumper case if need be.

The Zag speaker case is available on Zagg's website for $60, making it a great all-in-one option that combines the protection of a bumper case with an integrated Bluetooth speaker and an extra battery. This innovative solution is perfect for those who enjoy sharing their music on the go and want a convenient and portable way to enhance their experience.
