The Ultimate Gaming Phone (2022) – REDMAGIC 7 Unboxing

The Red Magic Phone: A Gaming Powerhouse

For regular smartphone users, the idea of a phone with advanced cooling systems may seem unnecessary. However, for gamers who spend hours playing games on their device, this feature is essential. The Red Magic Phone takes advantage of its cooling system to ensure that the screen doesn't get dim when it starts to get hot. This is particularly important when running demanding games, as dropping frames and performance can be a major issue.

In testing, the Red Magic Phone performed well even under intense conditions. Games like Genshin Impact ran at a constant frame rate, while Call of Duty ran smoothly with no issues. To push the phone to its limits, we also ran the 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme benchmark, which simulates 4K gameplay. The phone performed admirably, even outdoing the iPhone in this test.

One of the standout features of the Red Magic Phone is its display. With a 165Hz refresh rate, it's one of the highest refresh rates we've ever seen on a phone. While most games don't support this frequency, those that do will benefit from the smoothest possible visuals. We were also able to notice a difference in slow-motion videos and in the feel of the display, particularly when combined with the 720Hz touch sampling rate.

The Red Magic Phone is equipped with an absurd amount of RAM - 18GB on this particular variant. This, combined with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, makes it one of the most powerful phones available for gaming. However, it's worth noting that 18GB of RAM may be overkill for most users.

The phone also features a unique design element: shoulder triggers that can be mapped to simulate any button press on the screen. We took advantage of this feature by mapping the left shoulder trigger to the scope button and the right shoulder trigger to the fire button in Call of Duty. This made gaming on the Red Magic Phone feel more like playing with a controller.

When you toggle the switch on the side of the phone, it pops up into Red Magic's Game Space, where you can quickly jump into games from your library. You can also enable special features like performance monitoring and adjust the refresh rate on the fly. This is a great feature for gamers who want to fine-tune their experience.

The rest of the phone's specs are standard for a high-end device. The triple camera system on the back is decent, but not exceptional. However, you do get a headphone jack, dual speakers, and a 4500mAh battery - which is more than enough for normal smartphone use. When gaming with the phone's demanding display and high-performance hardware, however, the battery can drain quickly.

To make up for this, Red Magic includes a fast charger that can charge the phone in just three minutes. This is incredibly quick, and gets you over 10% charge and almost 20% charge within a short period of time. Additionally, the phone has a feature called "Charge Separation" which allows you to bypass charging the battery altogether and run the phone off the wall power directly, resulting in reduced heat and wear on the device.

The phone also features an optical fingerprint scanner that's fast and accurate. The UI is gaming-themed and runs atop Android 12, which is a great starting point for users who want a smooth and seamless experience.
