Tesla Model X 2018 interior and infotainment review _ Mat Watson Reviews

The Tesla Model X is a car that has been sent from the future and it's dominated by huge 17 inch touchscreen which controls pretty much every non-driving function in the car. The big central screen is surrounded by a bare minimum of buttons, with only a physical button for the hazard warning switch and another to open the glove box. This minimalist approach to design is great for style, but may be less practical when driving. For example, there's no physical button to adjust the temperature quickly, which can be a drawback.

The cabin may look glitzy from a distance, but up close, there are one or two bits that are a little bit less impressive. Some panel gaps are enormous and cheap materials mean that it doesn't really feel good enough for a car that can cost well over £100,000 depending on the model you go for. Customization is also limited, as there's only one trim level available for the Model X. However, Tesla does offer options such as different seat heights, autonomous driving technology, and energy regeneration modes.

One of the standout features of the Model X is its advanced technology. The car has a range of innovative features, including satellite navigation that uses Google mapping software and can be displayed with either mapping or satellite imagery. The system also shows live traffic details, which can be useful for drivers who need to navigate through congested areas. Programming the satellite navigation is fairly easy, as it comes with a full-size QWERTY keyboard and predictive text input.

The Model X also has some advanced safety features, including parking sensors that display their proximity to objects in inches. The reversing camera is also razor-sharp, providing clear views of the area behind the car. Additionally, the car's parking mode can be activated, which allows it to park itself in tight spaces.

One feature that sets the Model X apart from other cars is its online connectivity system. This allows drivers to access a Spotify account and use the web browser at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. The controls menu on the screen also allows drivers to tweak the car's settings, such as opening or closing doors, adjusting seats, or controlling air suspension.

For drivers who want to customize their experience, Tesla offers an upgraded audio system that sounds great but is only available as part of a premium upgrade package. This package costs almost £6,000 and provides improved sound quality and additional features. The online connectivity system also allows drivers to access the car's settings remotely, including adjusting energy regeneration modes or setting the steering weight.

The Model X also has some advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. These features can be activated through the driving mode page on the screen, which allows drivers to adjust the steering weight or set the car to creep in traffic like a combustion car with an automatic gearbox. The system also shows how efficiently the driver is using the car's battery range, providing valuable insights for drivers who want to minimize their environmental impact.

Overall, the Tesla Model X is a very high-tech car that sets a new standard for innovation and customization. While some of its features may be hit or miss, including the disappointing standard height light, the car's advanced technology and features make it an attractive option for drivers who value convenience, safety, and style.
