Our $100,000 Ranger Has a Problem

**Van Go Paint the Starry Night: A Heartfelt Tribute to Hose Masters**

He's truly a Hose Master after no time at all we've got ourselves a handful of beautifully crafted power serial lines ready to Plum up in our Ranger. All right, let's go Plum this car. Oh, we got our lions now we're ready to Plum the system. Guys, Daniel and Chance, got this thing about wrapped up and uh, we'll be pretty close to painting it.

With alloy armor and putting the lines on, filling up with fluids, and starting her up, see what happens. See what catches on fire. First all right, the time is now T minus 2 weeks until the Nora. Now's our chance to get some seat time. It took a lot of work to get here, holy Jesus Christ, don't don't don't. Don't we many different stages of this vehicle and we've all driven it at different points in time.

You're the only one that's driven it close to this configuration right, and in order for me to feel like I'm comfortable in the truck, I need to do a couple things. I need to jump it if I'm not confident in a jump or whoops like yeah what are we doing right! It needs to be able to stop really quick cuz we're navigating by book so we're going to make some mistakes and also it needs to be able to slide.

We need to be able to get this thing sideways so we can get around turns as fast as possible in the soft dirt. If I can do those three things then I'm feeling good. Today's one of the only days to see what is going to move break or how it's going to perform before we head to Mexico. So, we're out here at our top super secret practice ground.

Let's see what happens! Let's jump in. So far, things are off to a good start. The steering is feeling good, and nothing's raising alarms so we're going to send the Ranger into a few turns and really put it to the test. Let's go, Budd oh God! He's all close that was holy crap besides the steering feeling great.

The truck is also staying way cooler, seems like these final upgrades are going to do their job to get us across the Finish Line when we actually race through the deserts of Mexico which is in just a few weeks. But we're still not done with our testing. Let's jump it. Hey, not too bad; aoup pointers and Bam! He got it. I learned that was great. Nice and smooth steering feels good.

Now, let's play with the brakes. So, the brakes on this thing have been good for a while, but we need to make sure they're still very operable. It almost feels like they rear bias is that just me? You know what we do have a bias on there, and I don't remember where we set it. Okay, so far, it feels pretty good to me.

So, I would like to play with it a little bit. So, I think we should slam on the brakes and see what happens. So, we're going to test the brakes on this Ranger and we got two jack stands set up about 25 yards apart so they got to stop from there and see if they make it before this jack stand.

Oh, there we go! Hell yeah that's like in a straight line definitely stops great! Uh, when you're in a turn and you left foot break a little bit, it definitely kicks out but it kind of kicks out on throttle as well so I think it would be fun to play with it. It's a really simple adjustment but so far breaks are doing good.

Oh boy that's fun. Justin, I think we built an absolute weapon! We figured out that the brakes; we found out that it slides, and we know it can jump oh so good. So, it's doing all the things we want it to do. I'm excited for Mexico!

We're going to take this to the shop; I think we're as ready as we possibly could be. It like check it all how you feeling? Then I felt great! I felt so comfortable. You know the sliding had to kind of get used to it. It is a skill at the end of the day but at no point did I lose complete control of the vehicle.

It's actually surprisingly easy to drive once you're used to it, a lot of torque, a lot of brake do whatever you want! Waa... I hope the other boys are ready cuz they don't get too much seat time. Baja here we come; let's do it!

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is our over $100,000 Ford Ranger and as you can see it's not ready to race if you remember last time that you saw the ranger we were out testing it to get the suspension dialed in by the professionals over at King shocks well some things happened it broke and we also found a bunch of weaknesses in our setup that we need to fix for the race and we have less than 1 month to get it all ready to go we barely have any seat time we need to get this thing going so with a lot of work that needs to be done not a lot of time and we're currently filming Hyo we came to factory BS to get help from the professionals this is Michael Cox hi I'm Michael so if you know anything about Broncos then you would know Michael Cox he's the king of twin beams and King shocks he helped us dial ours in so we figured why not bring our problems to him at his doorstep let's add some problems to our plate besides our steering that's obviously broken our dented gas tank in the back what else is wrong with this thing come on over here there's just a couple issues that we right away that need to be addressed just to make sure this thing has a good opportunity to get to the finish line so here's the issue we have a lot of new components on our old ass truck that we need to install so that everything plays nice with each other remember we're driving 500 M on some seriously treacherous roads our custom parts collide with each other that means the race is over the faster you go with off-road race cars the more serious it gets right so now our new power steering pump will make about 2,000 PSI and hold about 2 gall of power steering fluid so we need a big Reservoir not only do we need a big Reservoir this is also a fire safety issue now right hydraulic fluid is flammable very flammable and now we have it in a much more pressurized system with many more hoses and components we're going to try to fit this massive Radiator in here because this truck was already having it was getting pretty hot just from doing that one section of whoops which you said as soon as we hit soft dirt and the RPMs go higher and the lower gear it's just going to overheat immediately y you're getting a sand wash and this thing will definitely be hot if it was running warm under light duty it wasn't even really under a big load so yeah you get this thing in load it'll definitely overheat so first things first we're pulling the old pwr radiator to make room for the big new one we need all the space we could get to fit this thing so the old mounts need to go fitting this thing will definitely require some extra clearancing oh definitely taller yeah the radiator is sitting in here it's obviously way too large for for the parameters of the Ranger here unfortunately sometimes you got to go backwards to go forwards so what we're doing right now is we're cutting the frame rail off about yay we're just cutting the whole front of the frame rails off including the bumper which is something we didn't want to do because then we have to either reattach the bumper or rebuild a new bumper but basically we're going to Lop the frame rails off there cap it and our radiator is going to sit down right about where this body mount originally was or is that's what we're doing in the meantime we're also going to get to work on the steering system the couple issues we're definitely going to address which is the steering upgrade is full swing steering system on this truck we're also going to upgrade the power steering pump we're going to add a power steering Ram so the steering will now be Ram assist so what the RAM does it relieves load from the box the steering gear right so now you have a ram that's hydraulically pushing the tire in the direction you're guiding the truck to go and that is backing up the steering gear as far as strength okay cool cuz that was actually one of the problems we kept having even before we did the ls swap was the steering box would rip out what it would rip out on its own okay we reinforced it and got better bolts and like hardware and stuff but that was a problem we had cuz we were just using the stock box we've removed all the factory steering we've added these swingers to the frame rails and right now we're in the process of positioning the tie rods it's a lengthy process to get these guys to clear and cycle everything that they need need to so it just takes a little time of setup and and trial and error okay so you don't want them smacking into each other we don't want them crashing each other yeah we just got the rest of our parts from power steering solution just in time we'll just keep cranking away this it's our new high- press power steering pump here's our freshly built power steering Solutions Ram it's our power steering reservoir and filter here's our very rare and Elusive power steering box today's sponsor Nissan invited us to Nashville check out the music scene in the allnew Nissan kicks have you ever been here before nope never and I've never driven a kicks and you're never going to cuz I'm driving okay whatever okay I like the interior dude these screens are really nice I like the hints of red stitching along the side it's on our seats speaking of seats bow stereo in the headrest music must sound amazing in this thing this is not nice yeah this is very nice I like it I makes me feel all the base to the Head yeah you ready to check out Nashville yay let's go the newly designed kicks has a Bose Personal Plus system with 10 speakers of the car including ones in both front headrest giving you that live concert feel on every single Drive well that escalated quickly yeah it did help me figure out how to fit all this in the car should be easy 2025 kicks has way more cargo space than you think we can just load up our stuff drop it off the to and then go cruising through hold up it's Nissan they want the kicks back by tonight ignore it there's no way they're going to notice if we keep it longer if you're looking for a spacious well equipped concert on Wheels check out the allnew Nissan kicks to learn more click the link below apparently we've got a lot more steering angle in this now yeah we've limited it quite a bit so that's one thing to bring up now try to not sear this thing full lock okay try to not sear this thing full lock because there are no stops on the steering box because we had to have the steering box built in such a rush right it usually comes to us we set it up we mark it where we need the stops in the box and then the Box goes back to the power steering guy oh really and he builds it like that so it stops Inside the Box correct and on the ram okay so there's supposed to be stops on both because what happens is when you're turning the wheel the box is sending pressure to the rim to steer it as well right it's a hydro assist right so what happens is that Hydro doesn't care where these parts start or stop it keep pumping it'll just keep pushing right so that's what you mean stop yes so we've added stops here on the beam at the knuckles but the steering's strong enough that it'll push through those like if you hit the Stop and you crank on it like it'll push through that got it now when you're driving the truck and you're like making these constant little Corrections going down the road you're not going to have to do that as much because the geometry is going to be so much better okay Co right and then not only that it's going to be a much lighter feel so it'll just make it an easier driving experience and the steering system will be strong enough now to take whatever you put it through so now that the ram is tacked in there we're going to cycle the suspension and make sure it everything clears and it's what we need the next thing we'll move on to is mounting the radiator we are waiting on our alternator and power steering uh relocator assembly those things got to move that would be one thing that's kind of hindering us I just want to get it in there it looks like there's plenty of clearance but we need to make sure those parts work so then once we can and we can verify that we can land the radiator we can build the radiator mounts and we can also land our power steering reservoir and filter now you have a filter on your power steering system we can also land this radium oh catch can we can land that thing somewhere cool all right so so far so good I really like the progress that's being made over here Mike is absolutely killing it boys at BS just doing a great job he said a lot that still needs to get finished off and to me it seems like a big list but he seems super confident that it'll be done by the end of the week so I'm going to lean on him with that I'm excited this truck is going to be sick I mean the fact that he said the steering is pretty close to a full by hot truck we could have a lot of confidence in it and again just finish this race off so let's go this is where our uh differential here smacked to our gas tank so we lost a little bit of gas hey that's a good tank though look at that for that to hit that and not break open pretty good it's going to come loose it's going to come back so that that doesn't happen again we need to make sure our bump stops are hitting properly so that we're actually utilizing them the way they need to be uh they've already got this stuff mounted pretty good cuz that was kind of embarrassing for us to literally Drive in a parking lot and our fenders fall off so you know no more hot boy stuff we may have to adjust some of these fuel lines cuz they may not go back far enough so we may be making new lines that's a possibility really important I see some of this has been done but like anywhere where wires can move they kind of need to be tied down and insulated for rubbage very important on an off-road race car everything is constantly trying to kill itself one of the things we noticed while we're out hitting the whoops and tunar suspension is that our limiting strap here was going under our Bump Stop which over time would just disintegrate it our limiting strap keeps us from going too far past full droop so the suspension doesn't end up colliding with itself up under the car this is actually too long it's actually allowing too much travel and allowing itself to get crushed but also our Bump Stop perch here where it actually lands and hits to stop the suspension from going too much up travel is actually bending already so it needs to be reinforced as well lot to do the fuel cell had to move back because the rear end housing was crashing into the fuel cell so the fuel tank for a desert truck like this is a little small it'll only have about 80 Mi of range but that has to be tested and proven in the dirt before we actually know how far it will go but it also depends on conditions and how you drive it right so about 80 M or an hour drive time is my estimate of when you got to fill this thing up every time it's going to be a lot of fuel stops desert trucks the fuel capacities have just gone up and up over the years some guys minimum they want is 50 some guys minimum they want is 70 some guys minimum they want is 100 you know obviously 100 gallons of fuel is a whole redesign of the back of the truck but one thing to note with an off-road race truck the more weight you can put behind the axle the better it's only advantageous to have more fuel because a you have more range but you also have more weight behind the axle so the trucks handle better with weight behind the axle because it naturally wants to pick the front end up so when you're going through bumps it starts to make the front end light and carry the truck through the bump or if you come off a jump you know you got all that rear weight bias picks up the front end the truck flies nice so just more weight you can get behind the axle the better so the spare tires the fuel tank everything back here the better 22 gallons is pretty small for a desert truck but I'm confident the guys they'll make it work yes just like mikae was saying some of these dudes in these races have a 100 gallon fuel tanks the whole back of the truck is a gas tank we're running this little 2022 gon tank and that means we're going to have to refuel quite a bit but that allows us to make sure we survive this race cuz our support truck will bring us fuel we'll do a little condition test make sure everything's running good switch drivers and ensure that we finish this freaking race because this is our first try and we want to make sure we've crossed that finish line I don't even know what day it is we got a lot of work to get done so we're just going to keep going it's all we can do that's racing hey good morning how are you today we stayed late last night got the bumper totally finished our radiator hold Downs totally finished our power steering cooler totally finished core support done all the tabing for all the accessories that we need to install our systems are done next thing we got to do is plum it so let's go to the plumbing store there one of our old cars right here I used to take care of but you can see the years and years of uh racing memorability on the walls here so we're here at g&j aircraft and this is Zach this is where we come to get all our power steering lines for the ranger project since this is a completely custom setup we can't just buy off the shelf power steering lines so we got to make them Zach's shop has all the right hoses and fittings to put together this custom setup watching Zach craft these lines is like getting a front row seat to watch van go paint the starry night he's truly a Hose Master after no time at all we've got ourselves a handful of beautifully van go paint the starry night he's truly a Hose Master after no time at all we've got ourselves a handful of beautifully crafted power serial lines ready to Plum up in our Ranger all right let's go Plum this car oh we got our lions now we're ready to Plum the system guys Daniel and chance got this thing about wrapped up and uh we'll be pretty close to painting it with alloy armor and putting the lines on filling up with fluids and starting her up see what happens see what catches on fire first all right the time is now T minus 2 weeks until the Nora now's our chance to get some seat time it took a lot of work to get here holy Jesus Christ don't don't don't don't we many different stages of this vehicle and we've all driven it at different points in time you're the only one that's driven it close to this configuration right and in order for me to feel like I'm comfortable in the truck I need to do a couple things I need to jump it if I'm not confident in a jump or whoops like yeah what are we doing right it needs to be able to stop really quick cuz we're navigating by book so we're going to make some mistakes and also it needs to be able to slide we need to be able to get this thing sideways so we can get around turns as fast as possible in the soft dirt and if I can do those three things then I'm feeling good today's one of the only days to see what is going to move break or how it's going to perform before we head to Mexico so we're out here at our top super secret practice ground let's see what happens let's jump in so far things are off to a good start the steering is feeling good and nothing's raising alarms so we're going to send the ranger into a few turns and really put it to the test let's go Budd oh God he's all close that was holy crap besides the steering feeling great the truck is also staying way cooler seems like these final upgrades are going to do their job to get us across the Finish Line when we actually race through the deserts of Mexico which is in just a few weeks but we're still not done with our testing let's jump it hey not too bad aoup pointers and Bam he got it I learned that was great nice and smooth steering feels good now we got to jump it all right so the brakes on this thing have been good for a while but we need to make sure they're still very operable it almost feels like they rear bias is that just me you know what we do have a bias on there and I don't remember where we set it okay so far it feels pretty good to me so I would like to play with it a little bit so I think we should slam on the brakes and see what happens so we're going to test the brakes on this Ranger and we got two jack stands set up about 25 yds apart so they got to stop from there and see if they make it before this jack stand oh there we go hell yeah that's like in a straight line definitely stops great uh when you're in a turn and you left foot break a little bit it definitely kicks out but it kind of kicks out on throttle as well so I think it would be fun to play with it's a really simple adjustment but so far breaks are doing good oh boy that fun so much fun Justin I think we built an absolute weapon we figured out that it breaks we found out that it slides and we know it can jump oh so good so it's doing all the things we want it to do I'm excited for Mexico we're going to take this to the shop I think we're as ready as we possibly bolt it like check it all how' you feeling then I felt great I felt so comfortable you know the sliding I had to kind of get used to it it is a skill at the end of the day but at no point did I lose complete control of the vehicle it's actually surprisingly easy to drive once you're used to it a lot of torque a lot of brake do whatever you want waa I hope the other boys are ready cuz they don't get too much sea time but Baja here we come let's do it
