worth of sales globally in 2023 bendy phones are a serious business and if there's one that dominates the rest it is absolutely the Z flip normally I'd cozy up with the larger zold 6 with its taet like inner display which is perfect for multitasking but this year I decided to focus on the little guy and I'm happy that I did first of all I love the updated design language for this year the squared off profile along with the matte aluminum rails makes for a Sharp premium look while the green colorway on my review unit is most certainly a choice I think the neutral colors work well especially with the straight cut silhouette let me know if you agree in the comments below I can't State enough just how nice this form factor is opened up it's pretty sleek and thin and closed with it essentially being half the height of a normal phone I find that it stows better in pockets and bags as well one of my favorite aspects about the size is that it's easy to use the cover display or Flex window as Samsung calls it with one hand if you're familiar with the zflip 5 from last year basically it's the same but useful nonetheless at the core much like faces on a smartwatch the lock screen is a great way to personalize your your device but really the best part is that you can run full apps on it you'll have to set up Samsung's good lock utility out of the box in order to open up full compatibility but this screen lets you do a surprising amount it's great for catching up on Twitter or watching a quick YouTube video on the go I'll also certainly get into cameras a little later on in this piece but having a dedicated selfie screen is a GameChanger especially if you happen to take a lot of those hell you can even play games like zenist Zone zero on this Flex window if you really wanted to though keep in mind that this is one of plenty of apps out there that really need that extra screen real estate I mean look at how small all of these buttons are needless to say the flex window isn't a fullon replacement for your inner display but it does unlock a ton of use cases for the Z flip when it comes to lighter tasks speaking of the inner display this is where I've noticed some of the more substantial improvements compared to previous generations not only does it get incredibly bright Outdoors standing out even in harsh sunlight but what really stood out to me is the crease which this year is less pronounced than it has been in other Samsung foldables now I don't want to oversell it it's not completely gone per se they still have a ways to go compared to other brands but for me I only barely feel it unless I really dig my thumbs into the screen it's also worth noting that the zflip 6 is rated for slightly better durability this year at IP 48 this means that in addition to holding up to some splashes of water there is also basic dust resistance as well this is partly thanks to an upgraded plastic bezel that protects the inner display when the phone is closed of course this doesn't mean you should be Reckless with your phone you should still be taking care of that inner display as best you can but if someone that doesn't particularly baby these devices either it's nice to know that there's more going into the durability this year but probably the main reasons why I love the zflip 6 over previous generations has to be the performance and battery life as they do every year Samsung has outfitted the zflip 6 with the latest Flagship chip the Snapdragon 8 gen 3 but the real story here is that they finally added Vapor chamber cooling this doesn't just keep operating temperatures at Bay something that the older iterations of this phone struggled with but it also allows for more sustained performance as well which is really nice if you plan on gaming on this thing it's actually how I've been playing zzz in my off time and this phone maxes out the game no problem add on the fact that it comes with 12 gigs of RAM standard and also includes a larger 4,000 milliamp battery in a form factor this small dare I say that the zflip feels more convincingly like a flagship smartphone than it has in the past now if there's an aspect to this device that makes it more fun than a traditional phone at least outside of the Bendy screen it has to be the cameras in terms of quality this year's main camera has a 50 megapix sensor which is up from 12 megapixels last year it's basically the same one that's found on the standard s24 in my own opinion with this new camera the photos are finally at Flagship level which is especially nice to see considering that Samsung touts this device as being fashion and creative forward now don't expect topshelf camera performance like you would see from an s24 ultra but this does feel more appropriate for a not so top shell phone however the real charm of taking photos on the Z flip 6 absolutely comes from the user experience while selfies aren't everyone's cup of tea I swear that this phone makes the experience more engaging and creative while also helping you take better looking ones as well being able to use the main camera for proper selfies along with the aid of the cover display means you can actually focus on striking that right pose and if you're with a group there's no second guessing if everyone's in the right spot plus the fact that the phone can be propped up on its own and that gestures work surprisingly well to take the shot without even having to touch the device is super helpful of course there's no shortage of gimmicky camera features as well just like with last year's Z flip this one also lets you shoot video like you're holding a camcorder but it also has new software buttons on the screen as well that allow you to zoom just like an old school
