Turn your Mac into a WiFi router and share it's internet connection

How to Use Your Mac as a Wi-Fi Router: A Simple Guide

As I sat at a business meeting with my friend, we found ourselves in a predicament. We were both carrying our respective MacBooks - one of which was a MacBook Pro and the other a MacBook Air. The problem was that the area where we were meeting only had one internet connection available, and it was coming via Ethernet port on my iMac. As you know, MacBooks do not have an Ethernet port, so I was faced with the question: could I use my friend's MacBook Pro to convert it into a Wi-Fi router?

To answer this question, the solution is indeed very easy. All you need to do is enable internet sharing on your Mac. To start this process, first, go to System Preferences and click on the Sharing tab. Here, you'll see an option that says "Internet Sharing." This is where we're going to set up our Wi-Fi router.

Now, on my iMac, the internet connection is coming via Ethernet, so I select that as the source for our Wi-Fi sharing. Next, we need to configure the airport settings for our new Wi-Fi network. You can change the name of your network if you want, but in this case, it's just going to be "Randit Kumar iMac." You can also set the channel ID and choose the W encryption method, which is supported on Macs.

Once we've completed these steps, press "Okay" and click on "Internet Sharing." The instructions will guide you through the process, but essentially, you need to turn on Auto Turn Auto On. After reading through the instructions, just press Start, and you're basically sharing your internet connection via Wi-Fi. Any of your Wi-Fi devices can now access the internet when your internet sharing is on.

As a note, the icon of the airport will change to indicate that this process is working. I'm now going to connect my MacBook Air to this new Wi-Fi network that we've set up on my iMac. When you're connected, you should see the network name pop up on your device's screen. Selecting this network and connecting to it will give you access to the internet.

Now that we have our Mac set up as a Wi-Fi router, let's put it to the test. I'm going to open my web browser and navigate to tech.com. As you can see, we're using the iMac's internet connection comfortably. To stop sharing your internet connection on your Mac, simply go to the Internet Sharing settings and uncheck the box next to "Share my connection from Wi-Fi." This is the way you share your internet connection on a Mac using the inbuilt internet sharing feature.
