What Makes a Porsche an OUTLAW 1974 Carrera 3.0 Turbo

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was 1985 and I had just totaled my beloved Porsche 964. With that insurance money, my wife and I decided to get another car, and we found this orange Porsche 2.7 on eBay. The internet wasn't really a place to buy cars back then, but we were determined to find the perfect vehicle. We didn't know much about the car's history, but it had caught our eye with its vibrant orange color and desirable design.

As I delved deeper into the car's history, I discovered that it was one of only 774 units produced in 1974, designed as a street/track car with a focus on performance. The previous owner, a British guy, had taken this car to the track regularly and even drilled two holes in each fender to attach a British plate, which he proudly displayed to mock his German rivals. It was clear that this car had been built for speed and aggression.

When I purchased the car, it came with a 3.2-liter carb motor that had been "raped" by its previous owner. I enlisted the help of my friend Steve Casper, who runs Imagine Auto in Kansas City, to source a replacement engine. We wanted something fuel-injected and reliable, but not too racy, so we settled on a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine with all the bells and whistles.

The journey to get this car running was not an easy one. I had it for about two months before Steve got involved, and during that time, the car would randomly start or refuse to start depending on the temperature outside. It was as if the engine had a mind of its own. Steve took over and worked his magic to diagnose the problem. After weeks of tinkering, we finally found the issue and installed a new engine.

As I took the car for its first spin, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and trepidation. The car's performance was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. With its turbocharged engine, it felt like a rocket ship on wheels. I remember thinking to myself, "This thing is going to murder my family!" But that was exactly what I wanted.

The car's design, while not conventional by modern standards, has become increasingly desirable in recent years. Its angular lines and aggressive stance make it stand out from the crowd. And with its original 2.7-liter engine replaced with a more potent turbocharged unit, this Porsche is now a true beast on the road.

One thing that struck me when I took the car for a drive was how much I missed the old-school Porsche experience. The lack of electronic nannies and advanced safety features made it feel like an outlaw car in the best possible way. It's as if the car was begging to be driven hard and fast, without any regard for the safety of its occupants.

As I continued driving, I couldn't help but wonder what other surprises this car had in store for me. Its Goodwood Festival of Speed sticker told a story of its own - it had been tracked extensively over the years, including appearances at some of the most prestigious motorsport events. The previous owner had even drilled holes in the fenders and attached British plates to mock his German rivals, adding an air of humor and rebellion to this already-aggressive car.

Looking back on that experience, I realize how fortunate we were to stumble upon this car. It was a true gem, hidden away on eBay for all to find. And while it may not have been the prettiest car on the road, its unique design and raw performance made it a true standout in my eyes.
