Creating a Floating Vanity: A DIY Project with Minwax
Hey guys, it's Christian and I'm here to show you how to create your own floating vanity using wood from the hardware store and metal pipes. As part of my recent Room Remix project, I transformed my plural closet into a fabulous glam cave, and as a bonus, I created my own sort of floating vanity. Today, I'm excited to share this DIY project with you, and I have my friends at Minwax who supported and collaborated with me on this project.
Before we begin, I want to talk about how much I love repurposing things and using them in interesting ways when it comes to design. That's why I chose to create my vanity by using wood from the hardware store and metal pipes to give it a little bit of industrial glam for this project. You'll need the following materials: wood, Minwax polish, one-step stain and clear protective finish, a bristle brush, sandpaper, steel wool, an industrial pipe, and wall mounts.
Step 1: Preparing Your Workspace
The first step is to prepare your workspace by stripping away any old paint. This means you have to stand and scrape away any dirt, grease, or grime that may be on the surface of the wood. You want a clean, dry surface to work with. Once you've completed this step, you can move on to the next step.
Step 2: Using Minwax Polish
The second step is to use your Minwax polish, one-step stain and finish to actually stain the wood. One of the benefits of using this product besides giving me a beautiful finish is that it saves a girl some time. It has the stain and clear coat finish in one, making it easy to apply. Start by stirring the polish thoroughly. Another tip I want to share is always test the products in an area that is not so visible just so you know exactly what you're working with and you know exactly what color you are going to get. Use a natural bristle brush and dip it in about one inch into the can, then tap away any excess before applying an even thin coat directly to your wood.
Make sure you're brushing the same direction as the grain on your wood. Your first coat will need to dry before you apply your next coat. After that, use steel wool to brush the surface. Remember, the more coats you use, the darker and deeper and purer and more amazing your coat will be.
