The Evolution of Minivans: A Closer Look at the 2013 Chrysler Town and Country

It's been said that Chrysler invented the minivan concept back in the 1980s, and every mom in the world has been thankful for its creation ever since. Now, Chrysler no longer has this segment to itself, but the 2013 Town and Country certainly has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

The interior of the 2013 Town and Country is upscale, with leather trim seats that are a nice touch in a minivan. The dashboard is also attractive, featuring a padded top and lots of chrome accents that add a classy touch. Even the base touring model comes with a generous list of standard features, including a power lumbar adjustment for the driver seat, 6.5-inch touchscreen, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and a rear DVD entertainment unit with a new high-res 9-inch screen. Additionally, an available dual screen Blu-ray DVD system with an HDMI port raises the entertainment factor another notch.

However, it's worth noting that the touchscreen up front is a little dated, with some primitive looking graphics and non-intuitive controls. Luckily, Chrysler is beginning to phase them out for a much better version. When it comes to seating and cargo space, the Town and Country is adequate but not humongous. The second row offers One Touch Stone Go seats, while the third row seat can be folded down over the bumper, providing a perfect tailgating bench. With a total of 143.5 cubic feet of space, this falls about average for the category.

One of the standout features of the Town and Country is its powertrain. The only engine offered is a 3.6 L V6 with 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, which provides sufficient power for hauling people in cargo at highway speeds. While the six-speed automatic doesn't particularly stand out in terms of acceleration, it smoothly sends power to the front wheels and has a manual shift feature. In terms of fuel economy, the Town and Country averages around 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Despite its long list of standard features, including stickers for just over $30,000, the base touring model still offers an impressive amount of value. The powertrain is covered by a reassuring 5-year/100,000-mile warranty, providing peace of mind for buyers. What we like most about the 2013 Chrysler Town and Country is how much minivan you get with a base touring model. While some competing minivans may offer more interior space or creature comfort, the Town and Country gives you everything you need at a sensible price. You don't have to load up on options to feel like you're getting a good deal; in fact, there's often plenty of value to be found by skipping the extras.
