NEW BMW i4 M50 Review - The First All Electric M Car !
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys and welcome to petroped and welcome to the new bmw i4 m50 the first all-electric m-car so yes i'm here today at the farm brett exhibition center with bmw for an electric showcase we have a whole range of different all-electric and hybrid vehicles from bmw to play with but my eye was instantly drawn to this the i4 m50 it's an all-electric m car now from the outside it looks a lot like there's an awful lot of family dna from m3 and m4 but don't be fooled this is designed from the ground up as an all-electric vehicle it's made on the same line as vehicles that have hybrid and ice powertrains but it is all electric and the giveaways to start with well maybe let's just talk about the grill to start with shall we now ever since the new 3 series and four series launched the internet has been on fire with comments about the grill the front end of the car and i guess you either love it or hate it or maybe you've kind of just come to live with it if you don't like the new grille on the 3 series and 4 series you're not going to like this because it's still a dominating feature of the front of the car however it is quite a bit different in terms of design from the ice cars because this is a battery electric vehicle now don't be fooled you know although we don't need the same amount of radiators as we would have if we had an internal combustion engine in there electric cars still need cooling so there are some some cooling elements here but it is it's blocked off and then actually what is housed on there are all of the kind of front-end systems that look out ahead of the road and scan the road for things like autonomous driving and adaptive cruise control and so on we've also got a slightly sleeker bmw laser light headlamp and i just think the front end of the car as long as you can get your head around that which personally i can it was a bit jarring to start with but the more i spend time with cars that have it the more it just i just don't see it anymore and i actually think the front end of this car looks really cool let's wander around the back because one of the things i love about this car it's an electric car and it's in that kind of grand coupe grand tour format it's not an suv so this may be an m car but unfortunately the bit that it doesn't have the big quad exhausts and that really larry diffuser and that's for obvious reasons it doesn't need an exhaust and i think that does detract a little bit from the rear styling of the car there's something about the rear end of an m car that makes it really very special but i like the little lip spoiler and it does have a kind of squatter meaner stance on the road the thing though that makes this car really really interesting is the size of the boot and the practicality it is a real kind of grand tourer in there with the seats up there's a big old boot space there's room for three passengers in the back but if you drop those seats it's almost like you've got a kind of four series stroke 3 series touring going on in there it's massive and that makes this car really really practical but for me the real standout feature of this car is actually on the inside that uh this screen let me just start the car this screen is really really lovely i mean it's it's got this sweep to it and it's made of a special non-reflective glass so in front of me where i'd normally have an instrument binnacle with a kind of cowling over it to protect the dials from sunlight so you didn't get glare you don't have any of that so you've just got this continuous sweep of glass with you know this is still a familiarity to the dials in front of me from from the if you like the traditional bmws but it's just it elevates it to a real kind of new and edgy feel and then this sweep here i just think it's lovely and i'm not normally a fan of of screens that stick up out of the dashboard but the way that works that's really very very nice i've also got a head-up display and then in here well what i like about it is it it's still got a nod back to if you're like a traditional bmw you've got a on a very sort of bmw looking gear selector you've got the scroll wheel to control your um your screen and your sort of infotainment system although it's all touch screen as well but apart from a few buttons around the scroll wheel and a couple of buttons here to deal with the different drive modes on the dash itself there are no buttons at all everything has been if you're like consumed by this screen driving position wise it's very bmw i can get a really nice driving position um a nice steering wheel it is quite a chunky steering wheel i'm not sure my friend mr joe achilles is going to like that too much i wouldn't suggest i feel like i'm sat in an m car these seats are nice you can actually upgrade to the m seats which i think look a little bit more sporty but if you wanted to kind of fly under the radar a little bit this is probably the seat choice for you but everything else in here there's enough carbon fiber to keep my carbon fiber once uh happy a nice bit of trim along here but all in all just a really nice cabin so i reckon we take this car up the road and just put it through its paces i've got a little short route today i'm going to try and get this car for a little bit longer sadly i only have it for a very limited amount of time let's take it for a ride see what it feels like to drive and i'll give you a little bit more information about all the numbers because everybody wants to know about the numbers the i4 m50 has two motors a 230 kilowatt on the rear axle and a 290 kilowatt on the front combined output is 400 kilowatts or 544 horsepower and it will support fast dc charging at up to kilowatts the i4 is also available as the e drive 40 still 340 horsepower and 0 to 62 in 5.7 seconds but at 12 000 pounds cheaper and more 50 miles more range at up to 365 it is likely to be the volume seller okay out on the road i have no idea where i am where i'm going but it's just great to be able to get behind the wheel of this car and for me i find it interesting that bmw have taken such a long time to come to market with a raft of really good evs because let's face it the bmw i3 for me is probably one of the best tvs there's ever been made i think it's groundbreaking design i know it has looks only a mother could love but it's a brilliant brilliant car so i've kind of been waiting and hoping that they're going to come to market with a bunch of really cool stuff and i guess for me form factor wise having something like um a kind of grand tourer saloon car format i think really is the sweet spot there are so many electric suvs out there i've only just stopped driving one with a little mg and that's the kind of compact suv so this i'm really excited about driving this first things first obvious statement coming it feels just like any other bmw in here it's a beautifully finished cabin um i've got all the technology i could need but clearly underneath me is a full electric powertrain now as i've already said this has quite a lot of go this m50 and i'm not going to be able to tap into hardly any of that today i need to try and get this car on a slightly longer term test to do that um but it's got not just a big motor at the back but motor on the front axle so that'll give me all the go and lots and lots of traction at the same time but this screen this screen is quite something i mean the detail when you've got it on the map like that is is fantastic um what i would say is there's a lot of touching screens and and stuff on there and sliding things around which generally speaking is pretty good especially when i'm at a set of traffic lights nothing else to do uh root preview there's loads and loads of stuff on here that um i'm not going to be able to necessarily tap into there's my climate menu or all my vehicle statistics again it's one of these cars oh green light let's go one of these cars where you really do need to rt fm and get hold of the user manual and go through it and really really get to understand exactly what your car can do in terms of drive modes i've got very familiar looking drive modes down there i've got eco pro and comfort and sport i think in the interests of this test even though i'm in a 30 mile an hour limit and i'm going to be quite you know restricted as to what i can do and i'm kind of doing this in a bit of a one-take format is i'm going to stick it into sport mode oh my gauges change i've got a sport individual i can start to customize things if i want to a bit like the kind of m buttons that you would find in a normal um m car very smooth the suspension doesn't feel hard and crashy at all it's kind of what you want when you're mooching around town like i'm doing at the moment and i guess actually starting this little drive i've got in a built-up area is is a pretty sensible thing to do because this electric format car they they live their best life in a built-up area now one of the things i can do because i'm in sort of you know urban traffic is if i move this the gear selector over to the left to b what i've just done is basically engage one pedal driving so if i lift off i've got actually quite aggressive uh retardation there without having to touch the brake pedal so when you're driving around a town environment like this you really don't need the brake at all you just lift off and you and it's actually quite an aggressive one pedal driving and in town that's one of the features of an ev that i really like the first time i drove a car with very strong regenerative braking i was like oh i'm not so sure i like that i think it was a tesla actually i came up to this junction lifted off the throttle and nearly went through the windscreen but once you get used to it once you kind of get a feel for it actually it becomes a really second nature way of driving i haven't i haven't touched the brake at all i'm just lifting off gently go down this way i think oh hello oh yes this is an m car this is definitely definitely an m car so it's the oh man alive that mid-range acceleration instant torque is is absolutely spot-on so from kind of your 50 miles an hour if i just drop back down to 50 miles an hour 50 miles an hour to 70. there you go now you can just feel the front axle there just gripping a little bit but it's a very damp day today and no traction lights came on no drama just just proper proper grunt you get a kind of were rather than a throaty raw of an internal combustion engine but i quite like it oh that's really addictive um at speed now on a dual carriageway the steering has quite a weighty feel to it the car feels very very solid indeed and the ride quality is phenomenal it's really really nice it's so smooth and i think the challenge with any electric car is because of the lack of noise from an engine every other noise in the cabin is magnified you can start to hear everything from the air conditioning fans to any rattle or any creek really really kind of you can't avoid it at all and it's it's super smooth and super quiet in here oh wow yeah now what i'd love to be able to do is to get this car i'm just going to put it onto the sat nav screener because that's really nice and cool is i'd love to get this car onto a nice long flowing b road because i guess the big challenge is it's now got a whole big bunch of batteries which weigh a lot but i love the fact that this very much like the mini electric when i went to see the mini electric um being made at mini plant oxford it's made on the same uh line now i guess the difference between mini electric and this mini electric was kind of adapted to be an ev they made space where the fuel tank would normally be and so on and they crated the motor so that it just dropped into the engine bay this car is built from the ground up as an ev yes it looks to the outside it looks like a you know a four series grand coupe but it is a bev from the ground up and it it's got some poke let's recap the performance figures 544 horsepower with 795 newton meters of torque that means the dash to 60 takes just 3.9 seconds although to reach the up to 315 miles of range quoted by bmw it's probably best not to do that too often prices for the i4 e drive 40 start from 51 904 pounds with the m50 starting at 63 905 pounds this particular car has the adventurine red metallic plus paint as an option plus a visibility pack of 1500 pounds technology plus pack at 1900 pounds comfort pack at 1200 pounds and the upgraded 20 inch m double spoke bi-color alloys are 350 pounds meaning it has 6 650 pounds worth of options giving an on the road price of 71 575 pounds although there are a couple of m50s here today with even more options coming in around the 76 000 pound mark that's just never ever gonna get boring ever oh my days yeah this car's got a turn of pace a very very impressive turn of pace so what are my final impressions of the first fully electric bmw m car well i'm sure there are many many of you out there that think that the word m car and electric should never be put in the same sentence but unfortunately people we live in a world where we're going electric and and there's not much we can do about it and actually i see in my job now more and more cars coming to market that are all electric or hybridized in some way so i think the best way to do it is to embrace it and uh and to just kind of to give it a go give it a try and and i have to say i've driven a lot of electric cars uh recently and what i like about this one is it's got the turn of pace of a 500 plus horsepower performance car and it's got that instant torque and it's got the traction of having the dual motor set up so it's got all the things all the best things about a electric car it's super quiet it's super composed it's very very smooth i can imagine it's a very relaxing place to be on a long journey but it also just feels like a bmw and i know that sounds like maybe a daft thing to say but when i first drove a porsche tycan the overwhelming sensation i got when i drove a porsche tycan was look this is a phenomenal electric car but it just feels like a porsche and bmw have done the same with this i4 m50 it it's a bmw i love that sweeping screen i think that is absolutely class it's got a lot of information on there the colors are really nice i think it's probably a bit over complicated but i'm sure you probably only use a set number of functions anyway the head up display is really good it's just giving me my my instructions of how to get back to the conference center but all in all this is a cracking car for me though the proof would be in the pudding of owning this car and that is just what the range really is is it 300 plus miles like bmw say or is it more realistically kind of mid 200s or worst case scenario low 200s on today's short run i can't tell you that and i will be having a chat with bmw to try and get hold of one of these for a bit longer to do a long-range test in it and space-wise in the back there's there's not a gigantic amount of space in the back if you're a long-legged adult like me but certainly enough especially if the front seats are a little bit forward but the amount of luggage space in the back with the seats up the boot's huge you drop the seats and it's a really really usable space in there and that makes this car for me interesting it's got the practicality that you want without necessarily having that big suv format that you find in so many evs nowadays but anyway i'm nearly back i do love that one pedal driving is really really nice but yes anyway uh big thanks to bmw for inviting me to their electric showcase today i'm heading on back now to go and jump in something else that's probably going to be just as fast but it is this when you come out of a roundabout and you just be doing that all the time oh my date anyway guys i hope you let me know what do you think of this new latest uh all-electric um but for now i'll see on the next video if you've enjoyed that one please give me a thumbs up comments below are always welcome and if you haven't done so already please take care guys youhey guys and welcome to petroped and welcome to the new bmw i4 m50 the first all-electric m-car so yes i'm here today at the
