Have you ever wondered just how far you can push a vehicle? Porsche thinks about such things and the automaker recently asked itself just how far it could take a 911. No not in terms of horizontal distance but rather how far up it could drive.
A team led by The Talented driver Roma Duman just set out to break an altitude record in a Porsche 911. Duma has won Lama a few times actually he's won at spa, at the ring and even at Pikes Peak. Now Duma has gone higher than any other driver outside of the astronauts piloting the lunar rover at the ohos Del salato volcano in Chile.
Roma Duman drove a heavily modified Porsche 911 to a spot sitting 22,651 feet above sea level. This was set in 2020 by a team driving a pair of Mercedes-Benz Unimog trucks. Porsche gives credit to its synthetic fuel for allowing the car to run smoothly in such a harsh environment.
I'm sure that helps what also helps is the fact that the car used to make the Run was modified to wear portal axles. This increased the ground clearance to 13.7 inches. Additionally, the 911 Carrera was fitted with awesome chunky allterrain tires, tons of underbody protection, a set of carbon fiber seats with fivepoint harnesses and a special steer by wire system called space Drive.
The 3 l boxer 6 and seven-speed manual gearbox however remained stock which is pretty impressive given the extreme nature of what Porsche and Duma asked of the car during the run. The car and team members are experiencing air that's half as dense as what we're used to at sea level couple that with the freezing temperatures in hellish terrain and you have a place not suited for a run like this.
It's an amazing test of man and machine and Duma proves once again he's the right shoe to have in the hot seat. However, I do look forward to seeing Porsche 911 the car owners attempt their own smaller scale versions of this run like tackling an ice covered parking lot entrance to a local grocery store in Jackson Hole or parallel parking on a snow filled Aspen Street.
While others are watching from their Range Rover or dropping the kids off at the lodge entrance to get a jump on the lift line at Veil, same struggles for sure and yes I'm jealous. I wanted the car though, this recordr run portal axle packing Porsche would be way cooler to own.
