A Review of the EVGA GTX 950 FTW Edition
------------------------------------------
Today, we're reviewing the EVGA GTX 950 FTW edition, a GPU that aims to bridge the performance gap between the GTX 960 and the 750 Ti. This sub-$200 GPU is packed with the latest NVIDIA features and promises substantial performance improvements for owners of the 650 series.
The Current Value Stack of NVIDIA Cards
-----------------------------------------
Let's take a look at the current value stack of NVIDIA cards. The EVGA GTX 950 is a cut-down version of the GTX 960, with lower clocks, fewer CUDA cores, and texture units. Despite this, it still boasts 2GB of RAM and a reduced TDP of 90 watts. The reference GTX 950 is priced at $159, which fits perfectly between the GTX 960 and the 750 Ti.
However, board partners are offering custom-cooled versions with factory overclocks that can extend the price ceiling to $179. We've seen this in action with the EVGA FTW edition, which clocks in at 179 MHz higher on the base clock than reference and a whopping 217 MHz increase on the boost clock.
Cooling System
--------------
Evga's ACX 2.0 cooler design is a marvel of engineering. The triple heat pipe layout, wide aluminum fin array, and dual fans make for an incredibly quiet system that can keep the GPU at a comfortable 68 degrees Celsius during load. The plastic shroud is simple, with a card length of just over 10 inches (26 cm). A SLI finger is also included for two-way SLI configurations.
The FTW edition comes with a back plate, which is a nice touch for those who want to add some personality to their build. However, this feature is only available on the FTW edition, and not on the standard model.
IO and Connectivity
--------------------
The EVGA GTX 950 features triple DisplayPort 1.2, DVI, and HDMI 2.0 outputs. This makes it an excellent choice for gaming and content creation setups. However, NVIDIA missed an opportunity by not enabling HDCP 2.2 support for protected 4K content over HDMI.
Power Consumption
------------------
The reference GTX 950 requires a six-pin power connector, while the EVGA FTW edition has only a single eight-pin connector due to its high factory overclock. Surprisingly, system power consumption is almost in line with the reference 960.
Gaming Performance Comparison
-------------------------------
Let's take a look at how the EVGA GTX 950 compares to other GPUs in terms of gaming performance. AMD's R7 370, priced at $149, offers aging three-year-old architecture but with 4GB of video memory. The EVGA GTX 950 FTW edition is getting close to a reference 960, and ahead of the R7 370 in most games.
However, it's essential to remember that the card tested in this review is factory overclocked and carries a higher price tag than reference. We were able to push the overclock even further to a stable 1612 MHz on the core, which brings it right in line with the reference 960.
Conclusion
----------
The EVGA GTX 950 FTW edition is an excellent choice for budget builds, offering massive performance benefits at a reasonable price point. However, it's essential to consider that this card comes with a higher price tag due to its factory overclocking and is only available on the FTW edition. With its quiet cooling system, SLI capabilities, and back plate, the EVGA GTX 950 FTW edition is an excellent addition to any gaming or content creation setup.
