Hands-On with Opera 10.6 Alpha: What's New and Improved?
I'm excited to share my hands-on experience with Opera 10.6 Alpha, which has just been released a couple of hours ago. I've spent some time testing it and getting familiar with its features, so let's dive in and explore what's new and improved.
First things first, you'll notice that the speed dial page has been tweaked to provide more flexibility. As you can see, you can now adjust the size of your shortcuts by picking from small 2x2, medium, or large sizes – my personal favorite is wide, which seems to fit nicely on my screen. This change allows for more customization options and a better user experience.
Compared to its predecessor, Opera 10.6 doesn't bring about significant changes. However, there are some notable cosmetic differences worth mentioning. For instance, the "Opera" label has been moved to the top menu bar, which takes up less space but also looks slightly different from the classic design. While I don't mind this change, it's not my personal preference.
Another feature that's still in its infancy is the ability to open multiple tabs without limitations. This was one of Opera's selling points in the past, offering a more flexible browsing experience. Although this feature is currently disabled by default, I'd love to see it enabled soon.
Now, let's talk about performance. According to the developers, speeds have been increased up to 50%. While my tests haven't shown such dramatic improvements, Opera still delivers smooth and fast browsing experiences – sometimes almost indistinguishable from Chrome.
I've also had a chance to play around with some of Opera's new features, like hover thumbnails. This isn't entirely new, but the implementation has been improved for better usability. Flipping through tabs or websites feels silky-smooth and responsive, making it easier to navigate.
As an alpha release, there are bound to be some bugs and quirks. In my experience, I've encountered a few minor issues where closing the browser application caused a brief flicker of the interface. However, this is more than compensated for by the overall polish and speed of the browser.
All in all, Opera 10.6 Alpha shows promise as a solid contender in the web browsing arena. While it may not yet surpass Chrome's features, its performance, user experience, and innovative design elements make it an excellent alternative to consider. As you can expect from any alpha release, there's still some work to be done, but I'm excited to see where this browser goes from here.
I'd highly recommend checking out Opera 10.6 Alpha for yourself. It's available for Mac, Linux, and Windows users, with plans to release the final version soon. With its improved performance, sleek design, and innovative features, it's definitely worth giving a try – even if you're currently invested in Chrome or another browser.
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enokay guys so I'm here today with a Hands-On of Opera 10.6 Alpha um guys this just came out a couple hours ago and I've spent some good amount of time you know testing it and getting a good feel for it so show you guys what's new and some stuff like that um so the first thing obviously you'll notice is that the speed dial page has been tweaked um as you can see here you can go ahead if you hit configure speed dial you can do a lot of different things you can go ahead and pick small 2 by two so I'm just go and show you guys that real quick um you can do you know all the way up to like extra large and you can do a lot um my favorite is wide that just kind of seems to fit the best but you can do a lot of different things um now if you as you guys might have guessed 10.6 isn't a huge difference from 10.5 um there are a couple other cosmetic differences for example the Opera and now says menu um to be honest don't really like that change it's I mean it's pretty simple what the what it was before so now it just says menu kind of just takes up more space and doesn't look that great but um and another kind of thing guys I don't like about it is that now all of you can go ahead and open up as many tabs you want and uh as you can see here guys they show up in different Windows as before but this is not enabled by default um I guess some people can you know when you have a ton of Windows up and kind of be annoying but to be honest that was one of the one of the big selling points from Opera because you can go ahead it's got really good Windows 7 integration so anyway let's go ahead and show you guys a little bit about the browser so let's go ahead and open up a page as you can see guys it loaded very very very quickly um they say that speeds have been increased up to 50% um I've done some tests and roughly it's almost on par with chrome now if you guys remember my browser test it was close to Chrome but it wasn't it wasn't all the way there well now it's very very close and to be honest guys watching it I mean I it's got such so smooth so fast it's really hard to tell a difference um so let's go ahead open a couple tabs here so you guys can see um open just another one of those um so now I have three tabs up you guys can see another kind of new feature well it's not exactly new but it's improved now when you hover over you have the uh of course the thumbnails but what it is is that it's now very nice and smooth where you can go ahead and flip between them it's pretty cool um now of course this is an alpha release guys so you're not going to go ahead um don't expect it to be 100% I haven't got it to crash yet but I haven't been really messing with it for very long um but I have noticed it's gotten a little bit glitchy a couple times but of course it does work most things work just fine for example I'll show you guys you know a video of mine playing you can see here it does work so I mean guys I haven't found anything that doesn't exactly work but I've found some things that don't um work really really well like for example like maybe you saw that when it closed it kind of froze for just a second but that again then again guys it is an alpha so you know what do you expect um guys now this Alpha is out for Mac Linux and windows okay um so everybody can get on it and they plan on releasing when it's the main version comes out they plan on releasing it to everyone at the same time so guys I definitely recommend check it out I'm really impressed with it guys I mean I know I love Chrome but H Opera is just getting closer and closer to pulling me away with every release ah it's going to be hard for me to choose anyway guys thanks for watchingokay guys so I'm here today with a Hands-On of Opera 10.6
