The Bugatti Type 35 and its "Baby II" Design
Italy Bugatti himself built the original Bugatti Baby back in 1926 for his youngest son Roland. The car is a 50-scale model, slightly larger than the original to accommodate adults like me and older kids. I'm getting absolutely soaked covered in mud but I don't care driving a Bugatti - that gave my knee a proper clang there.
Developed in tandem with a firm called the Little Car Company, the Bugatti Baby II is electric, just like the original. It comes in three specs: base, which is a composite car with a 1.4 kilowatt hour battery and a range of 25 kilometers; Vitesse, which is a carbon fiber car with a 2.8 kilowatt hour battery pack and a range of 50 kilometers; and Pursang, an aluminum body that takes 200 hours to shape, also with a range of 50 kilometers.
The Bugatti Baby II has three driving modes: novice, expert, and speed key. The novice mode is for kids, where the powertrain is restrained to just 1.3 brake horsepower and the car has a top speed of 12 miles an hour. The expert mode ups things to 5.4 brake horsepower and a top speed of 30 miles an hour. And then there's the speed key, which unleashes the full 13.4 brake horsepower and a top speed of 42 miles an hour.
In a test on an electric skateboard at a racetrack, I attempted to beat Lucy's time by driving the Bugatti Baby II. The weather was bad - it's coming down in sheets! - but that didn't stop me from having fun. Speed of 30 miles an hour come on that's some seriously British weather did I win? Unfortunately, I lost.
The Bugatti Baby II is a pricey car, with the base model starting at €30,000 and going up to €58,500 for the top-of-the-line Pursang. It may not be as expensive as other exotic cars like the second-hand Gen 1 Audi R8 or Nissan GT-R, but it's definitely out of reach for most people.
Once you get up close to the car and look at the details, the value of this thing starts to hit home. The whole car has been developed from an exact 3D scan of the 1935 Le Grand Prix car and it has adjustable dampers, fully developed just like any other Bugatti road car by legendary racing driver Andy Wallace on the inside.
The instruments on the dashboard are also faithful working replicas of those found in the original Type 35. For example, the fuel pressure gauge is now a battery charge gauge, the oil pressure gauge is now a power gauge, and what was the manual fuel pump is now the drive selector for drive-neutral and reverse.
One of my favorite features of the Bugatti Baby II is the front badge - it's a 75-scale real Bugatti badge made of solid silver. I also have to mention the other cool little tidbits like the horn, which is quite cool, and the charge plug, which comes off with a "boom". The car also has an online configurator that can be accessed by clicking on the link in the description.
While this wasn't exactly how I envisioned my first ever Bugatti drive - it was raining and in a 75-scale model - it's been seriously cool. It's definitely got me wet, but it's woken up my appetite for a proper 100-scale Bugatti on the channel. If we were to get a Veyron, a Sheeron, or even an EB110 on the channel, what would you guys like us to do with it? Let us know in the comments below!
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eni have always wanted to drive a bugatti ever since i watched jeremy clarkson raced that veyron up to london on top gear i've yearned to get behind the wheel of a car from mall style and today is that day and my bugatti is just over here this my friends it's a bugatti baby ii and it's essentially bugatti's 110th birthday present to itself it's an exact 75 scale version of the bugatti type 35 and it's called the baby ii because the original bugatti baby was built by italy bugatti himself back in 1926 for his youngest son roland that car is a 50 scale car so this car is slightly bigger to accommodate adults like me and older kids you're very open to the elements i'm getting absolutely soaked covered in mud but i don't care driving a bugatti oh that gave my knee a proper clang there developed in tandem with a firm called the little car company there will be 500 baby twos made and just like the original they are electric it comes in three specs base which is a composite car with a 1.4 kilowatt hour battery and a range of 25 kilometers then there's the vitesse which is a carbon fiber car with a 2.8 kilowatt hour battery pack and then the pursang which is an aluminium body that takes 200 hours to shape both the v-tess and the per sang have ranges of 50 kilometers thanks to the bigger battery packs and they also come with this which you guys might remember from the veyron the famous bugatti speed key the car has three driving modes to start with there's novice which essentially for kids where the powertrain is restrained to just 1.3 brake horsepower and the car has a top speed of 12 miles an hour then there's expert which ups things to 5.4 brake horsepower and a top speed of 30 miles an hour and then in very cool bugatti style there's a speed key just like the veyron which once you slot this in it unleashes the powertrain and you then have the full 13.4 brake horsepower and a top speed of 42 miles an hour in something with seemingly barely any suspension your arse is half full off the ground and no real protection that's going to feel fast but let's put that to the test this is an electric skateboard and lucy behind the camera is pretty slick on one of these we've got racetrack so lucy's going to set a time on the skateboard and i'm going to try and beat it in the bugatti let's see who wins speed of 30 miles an hour come on that's some seriously british weather did i win so the question is how much is it for one of these skateboard smiting bugattis well to be honest it's pretty painful the base car comes in at 30 000 euros the middle spec car the vitesse is 43 500 euros and then this car the top spec per sang is 58 500 euros that's a lot so it's one of these or a second hand gen 1 audi r8 or nissan gtr and although they were all initially sold out to bugatti customers a few build slots have since opened up due to the current global situation so if you fancy spoiling your kid rotten and you don't want a v8 r8 on your driveway be my guess once you get up close to this car and look at the details the value of this thing starts to hit home the whole car has been developed from an exact 3d scan of the
