HYPERKIN RANGER TEST ON ATARI FLASHBACK -- LGH

The Need to Use a Paddle Game Controller on an Original Atari and Its Compatibility with Flashback Systems

We're going to try paddle games on an original Atari, and this is actually possible, but it's not a question of course. Is it possible to do paddle games on a Flashback X? Absolutely, but will it work? Let's find out.

To test the compatibility of a paddle game controller on a Flashback X, one needs to leave their existing controller with all the buttons plugged in. If you want to control everything from the remote, it may not work out or require plugging this in and controlling everything from the system. We're about to find out how well the Flashback X supports paddle games.

The trusty camera app is used as a makeshift solution, but it's clear that it won't be enough to overcome the limitations of the paddle design. The center spot on the controller is needed to avoid any adverse effects, but even then, it seems due to the paddle design, it will not allow for smooth gameplay.

To resolve this issue, the system is turned off and turned back on to see if it detects the paddle properly and alters the situation. It's appearing that this is not going to be compatible with the Flashback X, leaving us with a question: Will it work on the Flashback 9 Gold? The nine seems like the better unit overall due to its ease of upgrading and modifying with an SD card, which I have a video about as well.

For those using a Flashback X, don't feel out of the loop because I have everything here now to get that done. I'm being very disappointed at the option of this Flashback system when it comes to paddle games.

To test compatibility on the Flashback 9 Gold, we plug in the controller and see if that changes anything. It seems like it might be working, but it wasn't doing anything on the other mode, so let's turn off that mode and reboot the flashback to see if it boots up with it in S mode.

The joystick still won't work, even when switching to F mode or using a fire button. The lack of stick support is disappointing, as we were hoping for more control over our gameplay experience.

Unfortunately, the Hyperkin Ranger controller was initially thought to be the solution to our Flashback paddle problem, but it's not compatible with this system either. In fact, it doesn't work at all on the Flashback X and 9 Gold models. While it feels phenomenal as a controller for the original Atari console, its failure in supporting paddle games on these systems is quite disappointing.

The disappointment extends to the creators of the Hyperkin Ranger, who came up with an innovative design that would have provided better control over our gameplay experience if only it was compatible with the Flashback X and 9 Gold. The game did load when using the controller, but that's little consolation given its overall failure.

In conclusion, for those looking to play paddle games on their original Atari console, a controller like the Hyperkin Ranger may be an excellent choice due to its solid feel and finish. However, for those who use the Flashback X or 9 Gold systems, this is not a viable option. The lack of compatibility between these paddles and Flashback controllers means that we're left with limited options when it comes to enjoying paddle games on our retro gaming systems.

Game Over: A Failure to Find Compatibility

The inability to find compatibility between the Hyperkin Ranger controller and the Flashback X and 9 Gold systems is a sad reality for many retro gamers. While the controller itself feels great, its failure in supporting paddle games on these systems means that we're left with few options when it comes to enjoying our favorite retro classics.

In the end, this experience serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough testing and compatibility checks before releasing new products onto the market. Despite the enthusiasm for innovative designs like the Hyperkin Ranger, it's clear that more work needs to be done to ensure that these controllers can seamlessly integrate with existing systems and provide a seamless gaming experience.

As I often say at the end of my videos, "game over" is a common phrase used in retro gaming, but in this case, it's not just a figure of speech. The inability to find compatibility between the Hyperkin Ranger controller and the Flashback X and 9 Gold systems has resulted in a failure that will be remembered for a long time.

Thanks for watching, and I'm sorry to disappoint with the outcome. However, as always, I'll make sure to provide you with all the information necessary to help you make informed decisions about your retro gaming setup.

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enand uh welcome again yes i am in the same colecovision shirt as previous videos and that is because i'm doing my best to get a few parts of videos filmed as i am really behind uh as you guys know from pain i sometimes can fall astray of what i need to do uh due to just had enough lie back relax and then get back to a video when i can so when i'm feeling somewhat okay i do my best to film what i can when i can to get things caught up and you guys had asked and i am going to review the hyperkin ranger this is the premium wire gamepad that actually has your gamepad built in so instead of a stick you have a touchpad style thing with some buttons but what's cool about this guy it actually has a paddle built in what our goal is today is not just to review this product we know it's going to work on a atari product but will it work on the flashback will it give paddle support to the x and the nine gold these are key things to find out so sit back relax let's open this guy up take a look at how it looks and feels and get it to the test okay so here we have it we have opened up the hyperkin ranger so this is actually pretty cool i mean that's a heavy cable decently long for sure but look at this look at the neat design here so here's your stick no more fighting the stick it's just a very smooth stick get your hyperkin logo here your uh one button which is all you need on atari and this unique thing here we actually can do paddle games not a question of course is can we do paddle games on an original atari absolutely but will it work on the flashback x and the flashback 9 gold let's find out okay like with any of these you're going to need to leave your controller that has all the buttons plugged in uh if you want to control everything from the remote i don't know if that'll work out or i have to plug this in and control everything from the system we're about to find out trusty camera app of course this ain't going to oh that wouldn't let me move that one of course so i do need to be in player 1 on this so we're going to do a swap around so i'm figuring that this needs to be in the center or bad things are going to happen so there's a center spot on here but what i'm noticing is it's not allowing me to no matter what mode i go into let's just see if i can so it seems due to the paddle design it is not going to let me so what i'm going to do now is i'm going to turn the system off turn it back on see if it detects it proper and see if it alters this little situation it's going to reboot now of course it's appearing that this is not going to be compatible with this question is will it be compatible with the nine um the nine to me is the better unit overall due to the ease of upgrading and modifying with the sd card which i have a video that i can link to as well and i will be doing a video soon on the x adding a usb drive to it to add all the games to it as well so if you have an x don't feel out of the loop because i have everything here now to get that done so far i'm being very disappointed at the option of this we're going to plug it into the nine and see if that changes anything okay so there you have it no matter what i do oh it might be working um it wasn't doing anything on the other mode so this is what we call mode here's f mode and s mode and i don't think any mode so let's turn that off reboot this flashback and see if it boots up with it in s mode see if it works okay but the joystick will not so even the paddle will not now i'm going to switch it to f mode nothing so guys this is an absolute bust on a flashback that kind of sucks because i was really really oh wait we got a couple more buttons here what is this right stick left stick maybe i don't know fire button works and that's it so we have no stick support whatsoever the uh game actually loaded this time that's interesting okay guys so unfortunately the hyperkin ranger is not going to help us with our flashback problems normally i wouldn't even bother posting a video like this but it's important that people know as i just found out myself doing this with you while you're basically seeing what i'm seeing as i seen it i will tell you that if you're looking for a good controller for your 2600 this feels phenomenal it really does but as for this it doesn't work and that unfortunately is very sad to say so guys this is the first time i've done a video where at the end we've had a failure i guess it's my first maybe most of my videos have a failure at the end but anyway guys until next time i'm very sorry to say the ranger looked like a very promising idea for our flashback paddle problem but it's not again fit feel and finish is what you expect from hyperkin nothing but solid if you are using a hyperkin console yes it works if you're using an original 2600 vcs yes it works but it does not work on flashbacks so again thank you for watching sorry to disappoint but failure on the flashback side but other than that one heck of a nice joystick very good concept good job hyperkin on the idea but i really wanted to work on the flashback so guys game over youand uh welcome again yes i am in the
