Fixing our Ford Mondeo ST200 for Richard Hammond – VERY BROKEN!

The Diagnosed Disaster: A Journey Through the Engine of a Failing Car

We set out to diagnose what had gone wrong with this car, and it wasn't long before we realized that the engine was at the heart of the problem. As we examined the car's exterior, we noticed that something didn't feel quite right. "Okay, so I've got some clues here," our host said, referring to a clip from the previous racing event where the car had smoked during takeoff. "This isn't good. Does this further help with your diagnosis or is it just another case of a Mueller dungeon?" We were still trying to determine what was wrong with the engine, but it seemed like we were getting close.

We decided to perform a compression test to see if that would reveal anything about the condition of the rings. "So, what are you expecting to see when we crack this open?" our host asked, referring to the engine's sump. We hoped to find some evidence of damage or wear and tear inside the engine, but it seemed like it was going to be a tough nut to crack. As we began to work on the car, we realized that we needed to get to the bottom of what had caused the engine failure.

As we cracked open the engine's sump, we found a mess of oil and debris. "This is super annoying and a bit depressing," our host said, referring to the amount of work it was taking to diagnose the problem. We remembered that we had put this car together ourselves and had even torqued all the bolts just right, but now we were having to undo all of that hard work in order to figure out what was wrong. "What's that crud up in there?" our host asked, referring to a piece of debris in the oil pan. We decided to take it out and see if that would give us some clues about what had caused the engine failure.

As we examined the debris, we realized that it might be the culprit behind the engine's failure. "Yeah, that could be what caused it," our host said, referring to the piece of debris. We were now on a mission to figure out what was wrong with the engine and how to fix it. As we continued to work on the car, we realized that there might be more to the story than we initially thought.

We decided to take a closer look at the engine's cylinders, but we couldn't see very much inside. "You can see up into that cinder there," our host said, referring to a piece of debris in the cylinder. We realized that the problem was likely further up the engine, but it didn't matter too much at this point. We had identified the cause of the engine failure and were now focused on figuring out how to fix it.

As we continued to work on the car, our host couldn't help but think about what might have caused the engine failure in the first place. "Is there something to be said for the blueness of that?" they asked, referring to a piece of debris in the engine's cylinder. It turned out that the blue color was due to the high temperatures inside the engine, and it seemed like that might have been the culprit behind the failure.

Despite the setbacks and challenges we had faced, our host was determined to fix the car and get her back on the road. "We've learned all we need to learn," they said, referring to the diagnosis of the engine failure. We realized that this project had been a valuable learning experience and would ultimately make us stronger and more skilled mechanics.

As we finished up our work on the car, our host couldn't help but think about what was next for them and their trusty sidekick, Richard Hammond. "We're going to head north to pick up a brand new car," they said, hinting at an upcoming project for the Drive Tribe Channel. We were excited to see what new adventures lay ahead for us and our beloved hosts.

And so, with the engine failure finally diagnosed, we took a moment to reflect on what had been achieved. Despite the setbacks and challenges, we had learned valuable lessons about mechanics and problem-solving, and we were eager to put them into practice once again. The Drive Tribe Channel would be back in action soon, with new content and exciting adventures waiting just around the corner.

As our host signed off on the day's events, they couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. We had faced a difficult challenge head-on and come out on top, thanks to a combination of skill, determination, and teamwork. And as we looked to the future, we knew that this was just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our beloved hosts and their trusty cars.

A New Beginning: The Drive Tribe Channel Takes on a Brand New Project

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwe're back at the smallest cog and we're working on the drive tribe fort mondeo st200 now you may be wondering why this car needs any work because the last time you guys saw it it was fully restored and was flying down a runway well there's a bit of a story after passing its mot the car ran into some engine trouble with nine weeks until our top speed run i requested that the car was ready and run in so we could proceed with the shoot the car turned up and looked and sounded great but as some of you eagle-eyed viewers noticed all was not well with blue spoke emanating from the car's exhaust by the end of the day it turned out that the engine was only rebuilt a day or two before the runway shoot unfortunately due to the thousands of pounds spent on renting the runway the film crew not to mention hosting a full british touring car pit team the shoot had to go ahead and the carp had to be driven down the runway on the day at full chat the reality of the situation was that the car hadn't been given the time to bed itself in it was not ready for the shoot the paint job looks incredibly rushed with numerous imperfections and there's a lot of scratches all over inside the roof lining is sagging the gear stick gator isn't on properly and lots of smaller details are missing so it's now here at the smallest cog one of my aims for the mondeo project was to get one of the trio behind the wheel when it was all finished and that is still the case richard has said he is keen to give this car a good drive once it is all done and dusted but until then we're gonna need some serious help from the thunder calls and today my mondale's not in the best shape it's not good is it me um it has been in storage for around seven months now hence the kind of state it's in i won't say there's some good paintwork under there but this is probably not yeah no um main thing today though is engine i love the duratec v6 but the last time i drove this car it was a bit poorly and i did see the video yeah i was thinking we'll very briefly start it up just so that you can hear it and we'll start to die as i say it's been in storage for seven months so i think it will need a battery pack to get it going it's probably flat yeah no put the pot and then we've got to go you in i didn't hear much of that but what did you hear she's rattling really yeah that's not good but they did stop so it sounds like you could have an oil pressure issue so what's the first thing we should do then to start diagnosing the first thing you do is check the health of the engine so let's do a compression test just to see if all cylinders are healthy first so let me know if it's a piston or if it's tap it or something hydraulic tap it okay right the only way you know as well as if you do an oil take drop the oil out that'd be a big you don't be seeing shiny stuff in your oil i have i feel like there might be if there is then it's um close up on it and go home let's just find out let's get cracking let's do it spark plugs are out and you winced when these came out this was back left and front right yeah tell me what's wrong with these well they're covered in oil and they should not have any oil on them at all they are a wee bit wet aren't they very wet so every all the others were okay they were dry yeah dry yeah these two are very wet we should save you the cylinders that are playing up it's giving you the smoke and the misfire right okay so the next thing is compression test compression test okay um this will tell us whether a cylinder is fully neutered we'll know straight away so we'll we'll do a good one first and then we'll compare all of them and see what the average is across across the six okay i'm excited but also petrified okay so the aim is for all of those pressures to be equal and they're not tell me what you found totally down so we've got three cylinders actually only running 150 psi okay and we've got the other three running 200 so it shows that three of them are down compared to the other three so we initially thought through the spark plugs there was two and now we're thinking three three's on that center one there's on his way as well so we've got these two at the back and then there's one in the front so basically she's only got power from three cylinders properly okay so extensive damage really is the prognosis there but we did put oil down the one plug and it went back up to 200 so that's that's signaling to me it's rings okay because that oil sort of seals it briefly basically seals it briefly it gives you full compression but if you left it now for a bit it'll just go back to where it was before sure okay well i guess that's the top of the engine semi-diagnosed we now need to go underneath underneath we'll drop the oil out now and we'll have a look see if there's any iron filings any glass or anything in the oil so there's kind of two ways to think about this either it's full of crap yeah and we're happy to just say okay never mind this engine is goosed yep there's too many particles flying around let's just get a new one that's quite simple but there's the other side where the oil's fine and then it might be worth diving into this internally or even so yeah yeah you could but if you promise one thing that worries me if you dive internally and do it again and you go up the road again and you're back so if you change it you know where you're standing with a good engine so basically you're seeing new engine no matter what okay fair enough well let's crack on and see what loyal looks like yeah let's get it done now cool i want to say give me the good news and the bad news but it's all bad news isn't it still very good news is it to be fair what have we found if i move this in the light it's a bit sparkly isn't it it's very sparkly you see all the little bits in there look at your thumb on that i mean that is feel it serious texture that's bad that should be nice and smooth oil no is that that shards of metal yeah that's metal yeah yeah that's that's from the ball probably and because we found out it's not just one cylinder it's three that means there's fairly extensive damage in the engine and it's the same same yeah you can see it there let's see the drops and then the rings that's not a happy engine so as i was saying earlier we can either try and fix this engine but now knowing that it's full of filings like that and half the cylinders are already down so okay well i mean i think it is worth taking the sump off and just fully yeah yeah there's also there'll be stuff trapped in the bottom of something you'll see it right and also we can see right now straight into the cylinders and you know which cylinders are down so you can have a look see if there's any ball scoring or anything okay but really long term this needs to go yeah i need to go on a holiday that one get a fresh one in it's such a shame because it is a shame it did look amazing but the internals just basically weren't knocked out it's not good is it the st200 will have its day just not today with everything this car has been through in the last year or so it deserves the absolute best fluids going back into it when it's ready and thankfully the sponsors of today's video and long-term supporters of the drive drive channel likely molly have come to the rescue we both believe as companies that as petrol heads we should be doing everything we can to keep our pride and joys healthy and on the road versus just opting for a brand new car on a monthly payment it's a hell of a lot more work but come on it's worth it once our v6 engine is either rebuilt or we have a new one to put in we'll be using liquid moly engine oil and there's also a whole load of additives that they provide for engine oil there's engine flash injector cleaner and plenty more so click the link in the description below to see what they provide for your car so you actually watched our one-way video last night i did go home and watch it last night see did you make of it at first she was good yes but on the very last clip as you were racing the british touring car you can see the smokes as you pulled off from the start line okay which isn't good so does that further help your diagnosis or is it just yeah it's a mueller dungeon it's just another i think it's still down to the right rings with a compression test so so what are you expecting to see when we crack this hopefully we'll crack the sump off now and have a look inside and you'll see more silver and hopefully depending on what it's like up and then we can actually look into the cylinders get a torch up and actually have a look and see if we see any score in all it's almost like we want it to be as destroyed as possible because i mean yeah the engine's going that's kind of the thing so it'll be nice to see something wrong with it yeah that's all the bolts off i think so so just crack it off crack him off now exciting same old bit crunchy though can you see the grit feel that put your finger in there then run your finger over it you feel it yeah again there's just tiny little particles if you go like that and go see the grey yeah yeah yeah that should be nice clear oil and it's not so i would say she is kaput okay so we need to get this part and we're wanting to look up yeah get the pan off yeah so you probably have to take the oil pump pick up pipe off and then a little tray and we'll have a look up in there cool very oily job what is super annoying and a bit depressing to be honest because i remember oh putting this all together and seeing all these things get torqued up and now we're just completely undoing it all what's that crud up in there letting that pick up oh yes see the pickup camera guys definitely get off so that that'll give you lack of oil pressure look that that is gummed see it yeah that's probably not good you can also see the blue paint blue how the hell was that going to be blue yeah oh god yeah that's really bad we'll take that off so there you go that's yeah that's that is okay that's a big issue that could be what caused it yeah that could be our our that can you be the culprit yeah there you go so we can't see up into the cylinder but it's come off so that's what was gone guns key shipping cinders at all kind of but not right clear i know there's the blue pen is there also something to be said for the blueness of yeah she's blue and she what does that mean it's usually temperature it's hot the male gets hot it changes color i can't see the car ever like the temperature gauge it didn't show it overheating but maybe there's just something happening down in the guts here that was a bit hot and happy let's have a look so you're looking for a like scoring scoring yeah you can see up into that cinder there oh yeah the chance our is probably a bit further up than what we can see not that it matters massive we know what's wrong with it wow we found the cause of it should we say yeah she'll live again now wouldn't you yeah exactly it's most called absolutely okay well i guess we've learned all we need to learn yeah so we've got a
