The Amazon Fire TV Cube: A Revolutionary Voice-Controlled Device for the Living Room
As I stand here at Scene it's TV Test Lab, I'm excited to introduce you to the latest innovation from Amazon - the first Alexa device specifically designed for the living room, the Fire TV Cube. This little box is packed with features that will revolutionize your entertainment experience and make your life easier than ever.
The Fire TV Cube plugs into your TV and streams content from popular services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, as well as cable and satellite boxes. It includes the same voice remote as other Fire TV gear, but with an added twist - it controls your gear hands-free. I set up a rack full of AV equipment to demonstrate its capabilities, including a big Vizio TV and a Marantz AV receiver. As you can see, the Cube is designed to work seamlessly with your existing setup.
The Cube's advanced features include built-in infrared emitters and an included IR blaster. During the setup process, it shoots out signals to reach your gear, allowing it to switch inputs on the AV receiver or control a sound bar. In my test setup, volume was controlled by the receiver, but the Cube also has its own built-in speaker - most of the sound, including Alexa's voice and audio from TV shows and movies, comes through the system speakers.
One of the standout features of the Fire TV Cube is its responsiveness to the Alexa Wake word. Even when music was blasting, it mutes automatically to listen for the rest of your command. The system can also control cable and satellite boxes, although DVR controls are not available. You can change channels by naming them, such as tuned to PBS - a great feature for Fire TV streamers.
The Cube also allows voice control of sources like Netflix and YouTube, launching them with ease. Amazon has refreshed the Fire TV menu system to make it more streamlined for voice commands, featuring numbers next to selections. While the Fire TV Cube worked well most of the time in my testing, it did fail to recognize some commands - as with any device, some devices work better than others.
A notable issue with the Fire TV Cube is that you still need to keep your regular remotes around if you want to perform more advanced functions. The included clicker can't even control volume or mute, so owners are advised to hold onto their old remotes for now. Harmony and other universal remotes do throw those clickers away, but it's a minor quibble.
Despite these issues, the Fire TV Cube takes living room voice control further than any other device I've seen. It's an exciting development that will change the way we interact with our TVs and entertainment systems. As I conclude my test, I'm reminded of the potential this device has to revolutionize our living rooms - and I can't wait to see what the future holds for Amazon and the Fire TV Cube.
In conclusion, the Fire TV Cube is an innovative voice-controlled device that brings a new level of convenience and control to your living room. With its advanced features, responsive interface, and seamless integration with popular services, it's an essential addition to any home entertainment setup. While some minor issues need to be addressed, the Fire TV Cube is undoubtedly one of the most exciting developments in voice-controlled technology - and I'm honored to have had the chance to test it out.
