**Driving the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 S: A Brutish yet Comfortable Experience**
The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 S is a behemoth of a vehicle, with a curb weight of nearly 2600 kilograms. Yet, despite its massive size, this car can handle itself quite well on the road. We put the GLS 63 S through its paces in Sport Plus mode, and were impressed by its level of stability and response.
As we hit Sport Plus mode, the car's suspension tightened up, and everything felt more agile and responsive. The AMG engine roared to life, delivering a mix of power and refinement that was hard to fault. But even with all this torque on tap, the GLS 63 S is not without its quirks. We noticed that the 9G-Tronic transmission can take a while to kick down into lower gears when called upon, and we had to resort to launching from a standstill to really get the car moving.
This approach proved surprisingly effective, as we were able to launch the GLS 63 S from a standstill in just 4.3 seconds - although our claimed top speed was slightly shy of the official 250 km/h limit. However, the real test came when we hit the open road and pushed the car hard for extended periods. And here, too, the GLS 63 S proved itself to be a formidable opponent.
Despite its massive size, the GLS 63 S is remarkably quick off the line, with the 0-100 km/h dash taking just 4.3 seconds. But more impressive still was our top speed of 250 km/h - which, although not officially claimed by AMG, seemed like a reasonable estimate given the car's performance.
Of course, the real test is how well the GLS 63 S behaves in everyday traffic conditions. And here, too, it proved itself to be a worthy contender. With its advanced suspension and comfortable ride, the GLS 63 S can absorb even the bumpiest of roads with ease. We took our time driving through busy streets and roundabouts, and found that the car's presence on the road was impossible to ignore - although we did notice that the massive 23-inch wheels can sometimes make the car feel a bit unwieldy.
But for all its size and weight, the GLS 63 S is actually quite comfortable to drive. The AMG interior is beautifully appointed, with plenty of premium materials on show. And the ride quality - even at high speeds - was impressively smooth. We found ourselves getting lost in the sound of the engine and the gentle hum of the exhaust system as we cruised down the highway.
One quirk did prove itself to be a bit of an annoyance, however: the 9G-Tronic transmission's tendency to lag when called upon to shift into lower gears. This was particularly noticeable when we attempted to kick down from eighth gear - but even then, it took quite a while for the car to respond. It's clear that AMG is still working on ironing out this quirk, but until then, it's something that drivers may want to get used to.
**A Competitor Worth Mentioning**
The Alpina XB7 is another contender in the market of massive, luxurious, and fast SUVs. And while it can't quite match the GLS 63 S for outright performance, it does have its own strengths. For one thing, the XB7 feels remarkably refined, with a subtle bump that tells you when you're driving over uneven terrain. The AMG engine is also more subdued than we expected, although still plenty of fun to drive.
In terms of raw pace, however, the GLS 63 S does have the edge - at least in terms of its top speed. But the XB7's 0-100 km/h dash takes a slightly longer time, and it's not quite as agile on the road.
**Conclusion**
The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 S is an exceptional car that will appeal to those who want a brutish yet comfortable driving experience. With its massive engine, spacious interior, and advanced suspension, this SUV is well-equipped to take on anything the road throws at it - whether you're cruising down the highway or tearing up mountain roads.
Of course, there are some minor quirks to be aware of, particularly when it comes to the 9G-Tronic transmission's response time. But for the most part, the GLS 63 S is an outstanding vehicle that will leave even the most discerning driver feeling impressed.
We're grateful to our friends at AMG for lending us this incredible car for the day - and we hope you'll enjoy reading about our experiences behind the wheel of the GLS 63 S.
