How To Make a No-Sew Tutu Skirt

The Art of Creating a Tutu: A Step-by-Step Guide by Arielle

As a musician and fashion designer, I'm excited to share with you my passion for sewing and designing my own clothes. Today, I want to show you how to make your very own tutu that's perfect for everyday wear or special occasions. I believe everyone should have a tutu in their wardrobe, and I'm here to guide you through the process of creating one.

To get started, you'll need about 75 yards of lightweight fabric called tulle. This is the material that will give your tutu its signature fullness and fluffiness. You'll also need some cardboard, which is 25 inches long and 12 inches wide, as well as rubber bands, scissors, tape, ribbon, and a tool to tie the tutu onto your waist.

I like to use a bow to measure myself, but you can do about two yards if that's more comfortable for you. Now it's time to cut out your tulle strips. You'll need them to be six inches wide, so I've got a six-inch pool at my fabric store that I can use as a guide. Make sure to secure the ends of the cardboard with tape, and then begin wrapping the tulle all the way around the cardboard.

This is where you can have some fun! You can use your tutu while it's still on the cardboard, or you can wait until it's finished to add some flair. The purple color I used adds a pop of contrast to the overall design, but feel free to get creative with different colors and patterns. Once you've wrapped the tulle around the cardboard, take out the rubber bands that were holding it in place.

Now it's time to cut through the center of the tulle strips, which will give your tutu its signature shape. Remove the rubber bands from the ends, and voila! You should have a bunch of 25-inch long strips of tulle, perfect for making a 12-inch tutu. Take your two yards of ribbon that you've already cut out, and begin wrapping it around your waist to create a base for your tutu.

Think about where you want to wear your tutu – high-waisted or low-waisted? Add a couple of inches to the bottom if you prefer a longer look. Make sure to tape down your desk or table so that it doesn't move around while you're working on your tutu. Now, start tying the tulle strips to the ribbon using slipknots. This is where you can get creative with different patterns and designs.

I like to alternate between purple and green stripes to create a fun and playful look. Make sure not to leave any gaps or weird spots in your design – that's what makes it special! Once you've tied all the tulle strips to the ribbon, give the tutu one final tug to make sure everything is secure.

The best part about creating your own tutu is that you can customize it to fit your style and preferences. You can add a fabric flower or ribbon bow for extra flair, or try out a high-low affect by adding some tulle underneath the ribbon. With these simple steps, you'll have a tutu that's perfect for any occasion – whether it's a birthday party, a prom night, or just a fun day out with friends. So go ahead, get creative, and make your own tutu today!
