"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is just one more note on the magic keyboard the new keyboard for the iPad Gruber an initial impression crushingly disappointing because it was so stiff but it only took him two paragraphs two paragraphs to say this thing is great once I let go of my preconceptions I fell in love this took me all of 15 minutes I went from I don't like the way this thing feels at all - I can't wait to start raving about how great this thing is it is the case that it that the iPad pro twelve point nine inch plus magic keyboard actually weighs more than the MacBook Air yeah I think that's so we you you have to come back to this idea that they're the reason a keyboard case like that has to be so heavy is that the iPad itself is so heavy so if it's right if it's Hin it would fall instead of having a kickstand right it means the bottom weight or it needs you know some additional weight to balance it out and Apple made a keyboard that is intended to sit on your lap it's a way not it's a weighted race basically so it needs to be heavy so I think a lot of people are expecting the magic keyboard case to suddenly be as light as the magic or the smart Keyboard folio or something like that and that just can't happen or the the iPad falls over it's too heavy to handle something like that so and I think Gruber explains it very well indeed very detailed and in a way to understand that you know if you were to I think he describes if you were to flip your your your MacBook or your MacBook Air over and then so that the screen is on the ground or facing down and then you try to open that you can't open that because of the way it's weighted it's because the the screen itself is so lightweight that it will kind of go with it so Apple had to make a keyboard base that is just as heavy or even maybe a little heavier than the iPad itself so that it can have that proper read weight and not fall over and that makes a lot of some of the the better clamshell style keyboard cases out there are the same way they're heavy because they need to be so the weighting can be distributed properly I'm not sure how so many people got it I mean mine's not coming till Friday maybe I they chose expedited sherbert Gruber actually specifically says that that was the review people got it there people in our chat room uh who have it in fact I think the 21st was the official date for for like shipping if you didn't probably actually got his yeah looking forward to hearing what he thinks mime artists in a chatroom says I have the new keyboard it's fantastic Baba who's in the UK says he loves it the magic keyboard is very lappa ball so the other people even aren't chatroom who have it so anyway I can't wait it's gonna be it's you know it's not exactly it's something new yeah and like I said there's this isn't the only solution that's out there and I'm hope we get to see a whole bunch of different lines with to be clear there was kind of a connector at the bottom yeah I would even I would even consider something that's even bulkier than that if it were if face if someone sold a frame that that something it's more like a conventional laptop and the screen part the part that holds the iPad is actually an aluminum frame that you can simply pull apart and then sort of trap it in there to turn it into more of a conventional notebook when if you are buying this iPad as a conventional notebook I that for me personally that's something that I would be very very interested in particularly if it had that had a 360 degree hinge because that is that is really one of the things that I adore about certain Chromebooks and certain Windows machines a 360 degree hinge I had no idea how much I would appreciate it and use it until I actually had one in my put in my bag at all times so yeah they're gonna be people are gonna be disappointed because it's not like a flimsy cardboard I'm I have an incidental use to maybe firing off a couple emails or messages type keyboard but then they're gonna be people who are going to be this is my going to be capturing stuff and then actually writing a thousand 1500 word article and then posting it on my website with video and with pictures and those are the people who are not going to mind like an extra two pounds if it means that this thing will not flex in their in their laps and it gives them although although free creature comforts they like one thing I think there was a misunderstanding like I think some people and maybe this was how Apple positioned it but some people looked at it as just another case it was like a better version of the existing case and it's not at all it is a doc like when you swatch that original key video you go it's on the table he comes he slaps the iPad down onto it he uses it and he picks it up and he walks away like he's not walking around with that thing it's like no this is still a tablet we're not making a laptop that you can pull the screen off of this is a tablet if you want to use it like a laptop you can put it down in this dock it's even got a little power plug for you you're okay but when you when you're done with it you peel this off and you go back to your iPad life and I think that's the mental difference you have to warm you get yourself I am glad that they didn't do the kickstand thing that Microsoft does with surface I really that really it's not only unaesthetic I always have to remember to do it on the other hand it's not going farther than 130 degrees I was surprised I got the impression it would be kind of an infinite tips over I was watching some demos and yeah it's over if it goes to your car it will follow it'll fall right over yeah yeah I hope I hope we get to see even larger iPads now because I would particularly particularly for creators who are now using it as as their artists device I think that there is now a case to be made I mean like an argument to be made for a 14-inch iPad if they wanted to do that 120 inch he wants his whole logitech so talented I wanted that too I mean Lenovo briefly I don't know if they still do that maybe they do they made a tablet as big as his screen secondly oh yeah they had a giant 27 27 inch iPad it'd be nice they made it it was a low ungainly it was weird we were viewed it a few years ago it was more of a conference room like whiteboard sort of things yeah but yeah it's it's nice to be out there it's nice to have the desk sku for people who again if you're the one oddball out of a thousand who can make a use case for that or has so much money that they just want it for their collection and you were saying I just dean has a unique way of propping it up upside down well someone asked me on Twitter and I didn't have one so I dressed up to Justine and in her latest video she shows like you you basically put it down the other way around so you put it flat on you put the it back side down and then the keyboard part shuts up but you can sit there drawing on it like an easel she said it's very stable that way weird weird let me see well some people want to draw and the like apple hasn't been serving that market for a while like they'll the the second generation the one that's on the new iPad pro that doesn't fold back into an easel mode the way the original origami smart keyboard did and now this one doesn't really but people are innovative leo they're ingenious they can figure these things out yeah it's weird cuz it really is a big market and when the customers are keep telling you but by abusing the way that but by using your product in ways you didn't so when they tell you we are they tell you this is how we want to use it and particularly when all the conversations and every single like digital illustration board is like at least half of it is about hey I'm switch I'm switching to digital coloring or digital inking or here's I can't get this pen to work it was the best set of pens to use and procreate I really think that Apple is missing a trick or maybe I'm sorry they probably are aware of it but they haven't made the money work out yet but yeah I would I am and I am in the market this year or early next for an upgrade to my laptop and boy that would get my attention in a huge way if there was an iPad with larger screen that's the interesting question yeah do I buy a laptop do I buy an iPad these days you can almost asked that question legitimately there's there there's a lot of people for which an iPad especially an iPad pro would be good and a good enough replacement for a laptop but they wouldn't need more than that yeah also that the last time I bought a bought a new notebook was in 2015 when and when again I famously emptied a glass of diet dr. pepper while falling asleep in a hotel room the night before I'm supposed to give a keynote address at a conference and so I basically had to say okay pilgrim you're you committed to giving this cane out there's an Apple store right across the parking lot from this hotel you have two thousand dollars it's time to go but even between 2015 and now my thinking is now is no longer if I have a limited amount of money to spend and believe me I do I'm going to I want to buy like the best MacBook I can and use it as both as a desktop and a notebook now am I thinking is more things have changed so much that I'm actually now want to split my money between a really really powerful Mac Mini for the desktop use but and that freely frees me up to make all kinds of creative choices on the mobile solution and what Apple has done with the iPad this year has made me thank geez maybe I really can reinvest in the iPad and make that my mobile computer from now on well I'll let you do that experiment I you know a lot of people we know including my Calgon had tried to do that that with the iPads but I think now it's a little closer than yeah there are several people who are like iPad then iPad only for a couple of years now yeah Davis Barney Frank yeah this is different this is makes it really more of a computer like I always felt like I was compromising where I had to struggle to do this thing to do was a little too much workthis is just one more note on
