GTX 1060 Benchmarks and Review - Nvidia Strikes Back

**Benchmarking the GTX 1060: A Mid-Range King**

As we approached testing the GTX 1060, my colleague reminded me that running 4K benchmarks on this card might be a waste of time. However, I was eager to see how our custom overclocked model would perform in various games and applications.

**Testing Lineup**

Before diving into the benchmark results, let's take a look at all the cards tested today. Our lineup includes factory-overclocked models as well as manually tweaked versions by yours truly. On the Nvidia side, we have the GTX 1070, which is known for its aggressive OC mode. To put this in perspective, our custom overclocked MSI GTX 1070 has a more manageable profile that end users can expect out of the box.

**Fire Strike Extreme**

In Fire Strike Extreme, our GTX 1060 edged out the RX 480 with an overall score that's 3.5% higher and a graphics score that's 5.2% higher. This may seem like a small margin, but it's a notable victory nonetheless. What's even more impressive is how far we've come since the GTX 960, which saw a whopping 71% increase in performance after just one generation.

**Real-World Gains**

GTA V provides us with our first glimpse of real-world gaming performance on the GTX 1060. At Full HD, the card yields 14% more frames than the RX 480, while at 1440, it sees a 26% increase in frame rates. The GTX 1070 and 960, on the other hand, are in a league of their own โ€“ they're extremely powerful cards that excel in every aspect.

**Hitman 2016**

In Hitman 2016, our RX 480 took the lead, but by only a margin of 4-5%. This is where things get interesting, as the GTX 970 and GTX 960 fall far behind. However, at Full HD, the GTX 1060 sees significant gains over the RX 480, with a 14% increase in frames.

**Metro: Last Light**

In Metro: Last Light, the tide shifts again in favor of Nvidia. At Full HD, the GTX 1060 outperforms the RX 480 by 14%, while at 1440, it sees a 26% increase in frame rates. This card is clearly on top of its game here.

**Crysis 3**

In Crysis 3, our three mid-range cards face off in a close battle. However, the GTX 1060 emerges victorious by a narrow margin at Full HD and Quad HD. At Quad HD, it beats out the RX 480 by 20%, which is an impressive feat.

**Performance Comparison**

Comparing the performance of our GTX 1060 to its competitors reveals some interesting results. While it's not as fast as the GP 104 (the GPU inside the GTX 1070), it's still a capable card that delivers notable gains in frame rates. However, when considering the current value king โ€“ AMD's RX 480 โ€“ we find that Nvidia's GTX 1060 is only 1.7 frames per dollar faster.

**Value for Money**

So, which card should you choose? If budget is no concern and you're looking to future-proof your system, the GTX 1070 or 960 might be the better choice. However, if you're on a tighter budget and still want a powerful mid-range card, AMD's RX 480 remains the best value for your dollar.

**VR Performance**

With the release of VR headsets, we can expect these cards to see increased usage in this space as well. If you're planning to upgrade to a high-end VR setup, our GTX 1060 might be a better choice due to its potentially longer lifespan and better performance at lower resolutions.

**Conclusion**

In conclusion, the GTX 1060 is an excellent mid-range card that delivers notable gains in frame rates, especially at Quad HD. While it may not be the fastest card on the market, its value for money is undeniable. If you're looking for a powerful yet affordable option for gaming and VR, we highly recommend our custom overclocked MSI GTX 1060.

you're curious here's how the card sounds the 1060 was using the 360 8.6 for press driver to run all games at 1920 by 1080 and 2560 by 1440 I was about to run 4k benchmarks on this card but that was before 10 our nyan cat guy told me it'd be a waste of time here's a look at all the cards tested today which either come factory overclocked or have been tweaked manually by yours truly on a side note I've dialed back the msi gtx 1070 s aggressive OC mode - the gaining profile that end users can expect out of the box with that said let's get on to why you're really watching this video in fire strike extreme the gtx 1060 Nets an overall score 3.5 percent higher and a graphics score 5.2 percent higher than the RX 480 a rather small victory also notice how far we've come since the gtx 960 outperforms the RX 480 by a wider margin at quad HD than it does at 1080 this time beating out team red by 20% when totaling the average frame rates we find the gtx 1060 to be 25% slower than its GP overall but Kennedy thrown the polaris card as the current value king for our frames per dollar I use the current lowest pricing that I could find between Amazon and Newegg for all of our cards with the exception of the 1060 which we're basing off of the official MSRP as we can see here the RX for 80 remains the best bang for the buck option with 1.9 frames per dollar compared to 1.7 FPD with the gtx 1060 if nvidia hopes to pluck this title from AMD's hand we'll have to see a custom gtx 1060 that's just as fast retail for no more than two hundred and sixty two dollars to achieve an fpd higher than the RX 480 should this be the case I sincerely hope it doesn't push the 480 over the edge every card has its limit after all so in the end which card is right for you well if you want to make the most informed decision I would wait to see what the custom board pricing looks like from both GPUs once they hit the shelves but from what we know now the gtx 1060 is a very fast card for the price and often scores notably higher frame rates than the RX 480 especially at quad-hd as I mentioned earlier well I didn't have time to test it this also leads me to believe that the 1060 would have a bit more longevity when it comes to VR if you got that baby daddy money the gtx 1060 gets my full recommendation that being said i wouldn't call the 1060 an Rx for 80 killer AMD's new card is still a compelling choice for 1080 gaming and entry-level VR whose value may still have some greater appeal for those on slimmer budgets but that's gonna do it for now guys to let me know what you think of
