Corvette Lawn-Mowing πŸ˜… | Frenemies St. Louis

And there it is once again. But a wide swing for 'em way off of that first front clip. I think Chelsea made a couple of mistakes. Whoa! Doctor, look at that! Wow! (engines revving) Unreal!

If I would've got my entry right, I would've been (bleep) in your shit. Aw, you blew the entry behind me a little bit? - Well, I just went too, I was at your angle and at your back.

Ryan says Matt Field, as does all the judges. Matt Field gets the win! Can't believe you had enough momentum, after blowing clips one and two, to throw it like that, you know? Oh yeah, I did. (Matt exhales) So it always feels good when you beat your friend. We're both the people who are talking shit to each other about who's gonna win and who's better or whatever.

To come out on top feels great. I was laughing until I was like, oh shit! Shit! You know, I've been on the podium once this year already. This'll be the second time. But I was on the wrong step last time, so we wanna change that this time. After my battle, I'm sitting there watching the runs.

Aasbo, Wiecek. Who's going against Field in the finals? - I was crossing my fingers that I was gonna get Aasbo. Thought I had a much better chance of beating Fredric because we just beat him in Seattle. And I truly think that our car's better at this track. That also helps Chelsea. If Piotr gets knocked out, then that means Chelsea gets third.

And it looks like Wiecek, as I said, had a window of, left a window open. Yeah. Aasbo. (rock music) When I saw that we drew Aasbo, I was like, all right. I'm ready. Car's ready. (Matt grunts) (engine revving)

This is really important battle for both of these guys. Are you guys pumped, St. Louis? (crowd cheering) Fredric Aasbo will lead. Finally, the Black Magic finals are here! Let's yell set it so they can hear us all the way across the Mississippi. One, two, three! (crowd yelling) Here we go, Aasbo.

Transition around that second front clip. This is what you're talkin', Ron. That clean air, looks very confident. I'm closing in. We're golden. Transition, and I tried to time this transition out perfectly where there would be no room between his rear bumper and my front bumper.

Very confident. Cool, calm, and collect, oh! And Matt Field makes contact! - He knew he had to risk it or no biscuit. I mean, Aasbo had a minute of correction, and it kinda caught, I think, Matt off guard. I think they deemed Matt at fault, though.

(dramatic music) It's the sport of drifting. (engine revving) I know Fredric's gonna be right there, so there's no running away. So the only thing that I can do is just run my line, dump a bunch of angle, see what happens. Throwin' it into that first front clip. Now transition into the second.

Obviously we're all good enough drivers that it's very rare that we make mistakes out here. - Here comes Matt Field. (engine revving) Into that outer zone. Unfortunately for me, I made the mistake. Workin' it, massage it, Fredric Aasbo doing exactly what he needs to do in order to get this victory.

And it looks like it will be Aasbo. (drum flourish) You know, today since it was my birthday, there's obviously some reflecting going on. And the takeaway was don't get too wrapped up into over-analyzing every single thing about this sport. When you're actually in the moment enjoying it, I feel like that is when your competitive nature takes the right course and puts you where you need to be.

Moving forward, I got to remind myself of that. You gotta enjoy this because that's when you perform the best. (rock music) This is the second time that I've had champagne drenched on my suit at the end of a weekend. But it's disappointing. It's not number one. The team is happy but not satisfied, but for right now, I'm gonna kick back, have a beer, enjoy the moment, but not forget to focus on Texas, because I think we have a strong chance there. (rock music)

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- Here we go, Aasbo.(engines revving)Transition around that second front clip. This is what you were talking about, Ron.Look at that clean air.- I'm closin' in.We're golden.- Calm and collect, oh!And Matt Field makes contact!- He knew he hadto risk it or no biscuit.(rock music)- What up? I'm Matt Field.- I'm Odi Bakchis, and this is my car.- And this is my car.(engines revving)Don't get me wrong, I wannabeat everybody out there. But there's one guy in particular.- He's a great team mate, but an even better frenemy.(rock music)(engines revving)(bass guitar music)- So we're here in St. Louis, the sixth round of the Formula Drift tour. It's a new track. That brings its own set of new challenges.Teams, car, tires, everythingare really put to the test. All of us are new here, so thepeople that are gonna excelare the people that are gonnabe the best at adapting.- Lookin' forward to it.- It's got a hole in it already.- No, it doesn't.- Yeah, it does, man.- Really?- Yeah, you give 'em a feedback, Matt.- Too (bleep) yoked, Odi!(laughing)(Matt growls)- Well, don't be buyin' extra smalls!- He's just jealous as--- He got a dad bod.35-year-old dad bod!- Dad bod!- Today's my birthday,so it's very special.I loved having my team, my family, doin' exactly what I love to do.I wouldn't wanna be anywhereelse but here right now.- I think it's like one of the sportsthat you can be old andcrusty, but you get wise.'Cause there's not so muchreaction time in drifting,it's just like decision time.- I see successful CEOs and stuffthat pick up racing in their 40s.- Yeah!- And they're just so calculated about it.They just somehow make it work.- It's not like, get oldand it's time to retire,I think you can drift well into your 40s.So you got something tolook forward to, buddy.- Yeah.- At 35.(rock music)- Gateway Motorsports Park is the meccaof all drifting in the Midwest.Nobody wants to skimp whenit's track day on the infield. As far as grassroots drifting goes, getting out to this track was a dreamfor everybody that hadstock SRs and KA carsand stuff at the time. You have to be a gooddriver to link this track. If you go off the track, you're in trouble.(engine revving)(metal wheels squeaking)- We've never been out here before,Odi has never driven on this track. We tried our best toget an idea of distancesand have the sharpness of the turnsbefore we even got out here. It's important to have a good spotterso that Odi knows exactly where he is.I get to tell him what someone elseis looking like on the track.(engine revving)He only knows what heis hearing and feelingfrom the inside of the car.So once the cars get going and initiate, they hit a first inner clip, transition into a second inner clip, and then have a straightaway, which is high-speedfast area where they hita second transition into a touch-and-go.After the touch-and-go, they headstraight towards the third inner clip, decel briefly into the first outer zone. There have been some difficulties.Even some of the highest-ranked drivershave not been qualifying very high. It's going to be a tough day. He's going to have to really battle, which means he's going tohave to be on each clip,on throttle as much as he can.(engine revving)- Odi Bakchis is Falken Tires. You can see he gets thatnice initiation there.Great job on that first inside clip.- Right now we're just over thehalfway point of the season, and I'm sitting in ninth place.I definitely feel like Igotta make up some points. You know, I'm just gonnakeep doin' what I have to doand pushin' hard.- Right on theline all the way through.- Nice jobthere from Odi Bakchis.- In Formula Drift, ifyou're not changing the carand progressing lap afterlap, you're falling behind.- Here we go, talk about luck, let's make a wish with Matt Field, that Falken Tires Corvette, really tightpast that final front clip.- I think a lot people mightlook at my driving styleand maybe a little bit of a wild man,but honestly it's muchmore calculated than that.Instead of wasting four or five laps,I'll do one or two, make a big change.- Very deep, almost camouflagingthat final outside clip withthe Falken tires smokin'.- How'd you do, Matt?- 95.- Yup, you got 95 on your first run!- How 'bout you?- I got a 93.- Damn, that's still hella good!- It's okay. You know, I qualifiedfourth, but what was icingon the cake is that TaylorHull came up to me and said, hey I cannot get my car running, and I'm just not gonna be able to run.(engine revving)Now I know I have a byrun goin' into top 16.I can feel out my carand be totally at ease. It's always a nice feelingto go straight into top 16.(engine revving)- Goin' into the last run of practice,we actually made a pretty big change. That was the run that I followed Odi.We're golden. The car reacted differently, but it reacted better.Kind of a wild run, but I knewthat the places in the trackthat I was able to charge, it was good.We come back, we reviewedthe data, and we figure, all right, we're gonna try it.We're gonna give it a go on our by run.- Matt Field up to the linein this Wish Falken Tires Corvette. This is a by run for him.He qualified second.- On the by run, instantlyit showed five miles an hourfaster at certain points of the track.Overall for the run, about a second faster.(engine revving)That's huge gains. We were like, mm-hmm, all right. We're on the right track.(rock music)- Forrest and Mattstarted their driving careersat fairly similar times.- ForrestWang launches forward.- His driving style is big angle. He's usually always on line. He's never an easy battle.- He kindof draws a little bitof an interesting linethrough that final section.- This weekend, he's beenlooking a little tight, having some troubles rotating the car.If guys are having somedifficulties on track, you never know when they'regonna figure something outand turn it up, or ifthat's gonna be the trendof how their weekend's running.- Matt versus Wang isalways an exciting battle, because the thing is you knowwhen Matt gets on anyway,it's something to watch.- Oh, and Field goesinto the side of Forrest Wang!- Going into top 16battle with Forrest Wang,we knew he was gonna be fast.Wasn't sure where we stacked up.(engine revving)Definitely a battle thatI was worried about. It's never confidence-inspiringwhen you knowthat you have a possibilityof getting walked.- Here we go,Matt Field, Forrest Wang. This battle should be fun to watch.(rock music)(engines revving)So there go Matt Field, ForrestWang into that outer zone. You can see Forrest Wang kind ofexceeding the nose there of Matt Field, but Matt Field goes allthe way to the outside.- Whoa! That got a little hairy there.- There's a lot oflessons that I've learnedbattling Forrest throughout the years.Different drivers dobetter at different tracks. What's going on this weekend right now, last run is what's important.- And away they go.Forrest Wang initiates, as doesthe beast from the bay, Matt Field.(engines revving)Now into the touch-and-go.Whoa, Matt Field!Little pucker effect, he launched forward.- And I have a damn good spotter, and he totally set me up.Because if he wouldn't have told me,Forrest does this here andthis here and this here,I would've ran into him andwe would've lost the battle.- Matt Field gets the win.(rock music)- In drifting, you need a carthat's basically like Legos, you can just piece it together. The best car for that is the Nissan 240SX.(engine revving)You can buy parts off the shelf.By just observing whatcombination of parts work well, you get this, a reallyfast, fun car to drive.I chose a LS style V8.It's actually a CBM-built block.Everything's after market, there's nothin'GM necessarily in this engine. You throw a Wisefab angle kit on it,the thing just becomes insane.Fuel suspension coilovers make this thinggo over any type of terrain,so you can just really stay committed.(engine revving)S chasses are pretty small cars, but when you look underthe hood and back here, there's actually tons of spaceto put a big radiator in the back, and shifting the weightto the back of the carso we can load their tiresand get a bunch of traction.I've competed in the S14 since 2011.I've won in this car, podiummultiple times in this car.I love this thing!(rock music)Now we're goin' into top 16.I know I have to battle with Piotr Wiecek, and he's a solid driver.I know his car is fast because I've set uphis coilovers with mycompany Feal Suspension, and know that I gotta expect a really fastand precise run from him.- Good luck, man, you got it.- Honestly, I'd ratherbattle someone like Piotr.(engine revving)I know I can just drive ashard as I possibly want to.- Wow!Odi Bakchis right there.- I've beaten Wiecek, he's beaten me.Piotr qualified a little bit lower,so that gives me the confidence to be ableto lay down at least solid lead runs.- Piotr is a very good driver.Very fast. We've been chasin' him all year. This is the time we're gonna get 'em.- Nobody really knowsthis, but half the timePiotr's out there driving,it's actually James driving, but we gotta keep that on the down low.- Basically, this top 16battle is like a final battle.Piotr is that caliber of a driver.- Odi Bakchis will lead.(engines revving)Initiating, both of them, simultaneous. This is what I was talkin' about.Look at that.- I've set a pace, andthe run just feels good.I put the car where it needs to be.- Final front clip, and this is where Piotr eventually, you see 'em just lunging forward.Gets into the side of Odi Bakchis.- You were verytight on the first inside clip. You overshot the third clip a little. You gotta pick it up and do what you do.- All right, babe.Thanks.- My spotter in my ear is tellin' me,hey Odi, you did a great lead run,but Piotr was on your door. Now the pressure's on me.I need to follow him verywell in order to advance.- That was an awesometransition to last outer.Odi's gonna have to turn it on for this.(engine revving)- Here we go,Piotr Wiecek out front.- I chase him and Iinitiate right on his door.I have to slow downnot collide into Piotr, and that set me off pace.(engines revving)We're goin' almost 100miles an hour, so fast that,if you slow up a littlebit or you go off line, you can't carry that speed.I caught up to Piotr on the last section, but I already knew I wassitting at a disadvantage.- You can see Odi overshootsthat first inside clipin the chase position.- When I look at thejumbotron after our run,I can see that Piotrdid a solid run leading.I kinda knew it beforethe judges made the callthat Piotr is gonna be advancing.(crowd cheering)- And Piotr Wiecekgets the victory, takingout our birthday boy.Odi, unfortunately--(dramatic music)- I was feeling pretty down. You know, it's my birthday,I was like, ah, I'm on one today.- Hug. Good.Aw, sweet. This track is hard. You cannot see anything after transition, before transition, like you have to guess.- Between the two of'em, it's just a tossupof who could do it.Odi's car seemed to be really fast, but Piotr's pretty consistent this year. He's been sittin' in third for a reason.- I was kinda down. Then I started paying attentionto all the runs afterwards.- Piotrclosing the door on James. That was Piotr!- And he kept on advancing.Kinda started takingweight off my shouldersthat I got beat by Piotr, and he's just on one today.I'm still not happy aboutgoin' out in top 16,but at least I went out to someonethat was just killin' it today.- You guys are still in?- Oh yeah.Great eight, bud.- Can you put our beers inthe cooler for us, though?- Hey, we'll give you a couple.- We'll be out here for atleast another two hours.- So next, great eight.JTP.(rock music)- In great eight battles, they get Justin Pawlak. In New Jersey, he was one tough battle.- All aboard the Falken train!Justin Pawlak!- Justin was getting faster and fasterevery lap all weekend. This track is all about speed, how much dig, how muchtraction you can have.- Like that line?- You need to cool 'em down, bro!- Cool 'er down, ice 'erup, make that power, boy!- They're putting ice on the supercharger,'cause superchargers build heat,so that'll make maximum power,'cause he knows we got it.- Talkin' about two crazy people. Both good drivers, both insane drivers. Both very hard-headed people.I actually have no ideawhich way it's gonna go.I can't wait to watch 'em thrash, though.- Don't youthink JTP's at leastgot 80 pounds on Matt?- Yep.- He's a dad, though, he's got a dad bod.Matt's tiny.- He's a nice, small jockey. We need a nice, small jockey.- Matt's size and weight makes itso that we can balance the car real easy.- A small jockey with big feetso he can keep the chicks around.- When I started drifting,it was all Japanese cars, even myself in a 240SX.But now look where we've come.Never thought that Iwould be in a Corvettebattling against a Mustang.Pure American muscle outthere on a drift car.- Reallyequally-matched drivers, both of them like to go hard.Justin Pawlak gettin' thatchange of position feel.Nasty little flip thereinto that first clip transition through. Both those guys, barely just kissin'.Past the final front clipinto the outside sweeper.- I had a ton of confidence going in,and that's all due tothe changes that we madebefore our by run.(engine revving)- Matt Fieldpunts that second clip flip.Flying through, Justin Pawlakriding the lightning back field.Got good proximity there. And around that final finish line, look at that, staying on it.(announcer whistles)It looks like it is unanimous.Matt Field gets the win.- We got the win!It was pretty straightforward.Justin drove hard.He had a seriously goodline, a ton of angle.I just was a little bit closer. That's kinda all that came down to it.- Fuck, that little thing's fast.- After that battle, I realizeI'm in the zone, I'm drivin' good. All right, who's next?Chelsea Denofa, my boy.(rock music)Chelsea's definitelyone of my best friends. For me to see him do sowell in the final fourin that Mustang that I knowhe's been struggling with,I was pumped!Chelsea and I are very similar drivers, balls to the wall, wideopen, throw it in hard.I knew that he was gonnapull some crazy, wild stuff. There might be body contact.- Two rad drivers that go hard.Looks like Matt's got his car dialed,I know he's been workin' on it a bit. We've come into our own this weekendwith the four Mustang RTRs,and Chelsea is on fire right now,so may the best man win.- Well, ifyou've got a nut allergy,be prepared. These guys are about to get nuts.Field and Denofa.Who's goin' to the final?(engines revving)Field initiates. There you go, that's whathe was talkin' about.About to get nuts.- My lead run was solid, safe, smart. He was there, but--- Denofadoesn't go all the wayout for the touch and go.Compromises that, littlecorrection bobble there.Very fluid run there from Matt Field.(tires screeching)- Chelsea and I, we bothwanna win really, really bad.- And there it is once again. But a wide swing for 'em wayoff of that first front clip.- I think Chelsea madea couple of mistakes.- Whoa!Doctor, look at that!Wow!(engines revving)Unreal!- If I would've got my entry right,I would've been (bleep) in your shit.- Aw, you blew the entrybehind me a little bit?- Well, I just went too,I was at your angle and at your back.- Ryan says MattField, as does all the judges.Matt Field gets the win!- Can't believe you had enough momentum, after blowing clips one and two,to throw it like that, you know?- Oh yeah, I did.(Matt exhales)So it always feels goodwhen you beat your friend. We're both the people who are talkin' shitto each other about who's gonna winand who's better or whatever. To come out on top feels great.I was laughing until I was like,oh shit!- Shit!- You know, I've been on thepodium once this year already. This'll be the second time. But I was on the wrong step last time,so we wanna change that this time. After my battle, I'm sittin'there watchin' the runs.- Aasbo, Wiecek.Who's goin' against Field in the finals?- I was crossing my fingersthat I was gonna get Aasbo.Thought I had a much betterchance of beating Fredricbecause we just beat him in Seattle. And I truly think that ourcar's better at this track. That also helps Chelsea. If Piotr gets knocked out, then that meansChelsea gets third.- And it lookslike Wiecek, as I said, had a window of, left a window open.- Yeah. Aasbo.(rock music)When I saw that we drewAasbo, I was like, all right.I'm ready.Car's ready.(Matt grunts)(engine revving)- This is areally important battlefor both of these guys.- Are youguys pumped, St. Louis?(crowd cheering)- Fredric Aasbo will lead. Finally, the Black Magic finals are here!Let's yell set it so they can hear usall the way across the Mississippi. One, two, three!(crowd yelling)Here we go, Aasbo.Transition around that second front clip. This is what you're talkin', Ron.That clean air, looks very confident.- I'm closin' in.We're golden.Transition, and I triedto time this transitionout perfectly where there would be no roombetween his rear bumperand my front bumper.- Very confident.Cool, calm, and collect, oh!And Matt Field makes contact!- He knew he hadto risk it or no biscuit.- I mean, Aasbo had aminute of correction, and it kinda caught, Ithink, Matt off guard.I think they deemed Matt at fault, though.(dramatic music)- It's the sport of drifting.(engine revving)I know Fredric's gonna be right there,so there's no running away.So the only thing that Ican do is just run my line, dump a bunch of angle, see what happens.- Throwin' itinto that first front clip. Now transition into the second.- Obviously we're all good enough driversthat it's very rare thatwe make mistakes out here.- Here comes Matt Field.(engine revving)Into that outer zone.- Unfortunately forme, I made the mistake.- Workin' it, massage it,Fredric Aasbo doingexactly what he needs to doin order to get this victory. And it looks like it will be Aasbo.(drum flourish)- You know, today, sinceit was my birthday, there's obviously somereflecting goin' on.And the take away was, don't get too wrapped upinto over-analyzingeverything about this sport. When you're actually inthe moment enjoying it,I feel like that is whenyour competitive naturetakes the right course andputs you where you need to be.Moving forward, I gottaremind myself of that. You gotta enjoy thisbecause that's when you perform the best.(rock music)- This is the second time that I've hadchampagne drenched on mysuit at the end of a weekend. But it's disappointing. It's not number one.The team is happy but not satisfied, but for right now, I'm gonnakick back, have a beer, enjoy the moment, but notforget to focus on Texas, because I think we havea strong chance there.(rock music)
