The Rise of Huawei: A Surprising Turn of Events in Smartphone Sales

In a shocking turn of events, Huawei has finally surpassed Apple in terms of smartphone sales share, marking the Chinese company as the second-largest handset manufacturer in the world.

This milestone was achieved during the months of June and July, with Huawei taking the top spot for the first time ever. It's worth noting that this achievement does not include quarter four, which is when Apple typically announces and sells a majority of their devices. Nevertheless, it remains a significant accomplishment nonetheless.

For those keeping track of industry trends, Samsung still holds the number one position, but Huawei's rise to prominence has left many people surprised. When discussing this development with acquaintances, they often express amusement at the unexpected nature of the event.

Huawei's success is a testament to the company's growing influence in the global smartphone market. With Apple still holding its ground, especially during quarter four, it will be interesting to see how this dynamic continues to play out in the coming months and years.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- In June and July,Huawei for the first time everpassed Apple in terms ofsmartphone sales sharemaking them the secondlargest hand set manufacturerin the world. For those keeping score,Samsung is still number one.Now these numbers don'tinclude quarter fourwhich is when Appleannounces and sells majorityof their devices butit's still no small feat. The funny thing iswhen I mention this to people that I knowthey always say,\"Who's Huawei?\"Today, Huawei showed metheir latest flagship devicesand I only had a brief time with thembut from what I saw,I think it might be time peoplestarted to learn their name. This is the new Mate and Mate 10 pro. They show how serious Huawei isabout going after Apple and Samsung. They both feature Huawei'sin-house maded Kirin 970 chipsetthat was announced recently. It has an eight-core C.P.U.,12-core G.P.U. and an N.P.U.or neural processing unit,a term we will all become familiar withacross the industry, by the way.The concept here is similarto what apple has along sidetheir C.P.U./G.P.U. comboin the A11 bionic chipsetand what undoubtedly Qualcom and otherswill be releasing soon as well. The overall concept here isthat while the C.P.U. and G.P.U.can handle normalgraphics and computations, the N.P.U. can handlethe much more intensivemachine learning aspects.Things from image recognitionto A.R. applictions, etc.can utilize the N.P.U. for thesuper intensive A.I. aspectsand let the G.P.U. andC.P.U. display graphicsand do other computationsinstead of being bogged downby having to do all of it.Paired with the new chipsetis a decent six gigs ofR.A.M. on the Mate 10 Proand four gigs on the Mate 10.Now besides brains, the devices really don't look bad either. Both devices have the samegeneral shape and size, interestingly enough. The Mate 10 howeverhas a smaller 5.9 inch,2560 by 1440 L.C.D. displayin a 16:9 aspect ratioset above the finger print sensor, while the Mate 10 Pro movesthe finger print sensorto the back of the deviceto accommodate a larger, six inch, 18:9 aspect ratio,1260 by 1080 O.L.E.D. display, making for a much smallerbezel at the top and bottomthat fits in line with thelatest trents in flagship phonesthat I, for one, love. Also, both of thesescreens support H.D.R. 10.Around back both havea multi-access curved,A.K.A. sort of dome shaped backing, made of out of reflective glassand with their new dual camerasset in the vertical orientationinside a signature stripesection at the top of the device, something that I'm also not mad at.We have one 20 megapixelmonochrome camera sensorand a 12 megapixel RGB cameraand both are super fast F1.6 aperaturesand can record up to 4Kand thanks to the N.P.U.,Huawei showed off an interesting twiston their camera's auto mode.In addition to the normaladjusting of settingsthat any camera phonewould do in auto mode, the Huawei Mate 10 series canalso use image recognitionto figure out what is in the photoand change the settings based on that. Some of these modes, like the separateprofiles for dog and cat, what settings need tobe changed specificallyfor each of those animals, I don't know, seem a little gimmicky to mebut other ones, like snow, sunset, water, all of those, those make sense.Often times when shooting things like thatwhere the light can greatlyvary within the scene, auto mode does its bestbut if the phone knew whatscene you were shooting,it could adjust little parts of thatprobably a lot betterthan if it was just autoand shooting everything the same always. We'll have to see how itdoes in the real worldbut I can say that using the demo unitsfor a short period of time,it was able to recognize things super fastand adjust things on the flywhich was kind of cool.Powering both devicesis a pretty beefy 4000 milliamp battery. To put that into comparisonthe iPhone 8 Plushas a 2690 milliamp batteryand the Galaxy Note 3has a 3300 milliamp one.Huawei is also claiming 20hours of LTE web surfing, which frankly would be nuts,so we'll have to check thatout when it's released.Huawei has also fitted themwith Huawei supercharged techthat they claim can getto 58% in 30 minutesand keep in mind that 58%of a 4000 milliamp batteryis pretty darn fast. The devices are running thelatest version of E.M.U.I.,version eight.Huawei's custom U.I. on top of androidand I have to say thatcompared to previous versionsthat I've used, the U.I. itself isgetting a lot more refinedand less in my way like someother custom U.I.s tend to do.They've also managed to putin some interesting featuresinto the U.I. that mightlook sort of familiarcompared to other manufacturer's featuresbut it seems as if theengineers at Huawei were like,\"Oh, that? We can do that to\"and then better.\"For example, the Mate 10 Prohas split screen for appsbut can automaticallyturn them on if, say, you're watching a movie andyou get a text from somebodyand tap the notification to replyand things like a desktop modethat looks oddly familiarto another companieswith full screen apps thatyou can then turn into windowsand move around, etc.but it doesn't require a dock. You can use any cable thathas U.S.B.C. at one endand supports Display port.Speaking of the U.S.B.C. cable, the Mate 10 pro has that as its only portand it's I.P. 67 certified, while the Mate 10 hasU.S.B.C. and a headphone jackand is not I.P. rated at all.At the time of filming thisthere was no pricing oravailability informationbut when this goes live,Huawei should have held an eventwhere they should have at least givena little bit more info on thatand I'll add that at a link below. All in all,I have to admit specs wise, the Mate 10 Pro is up therewith any of the other flagship devicesand even though I hadlimited time with it,it did feel pretty snappy,it felt premium and the photosthat they were showing uslooked pretty impressive as well. The big question for meis will both of these devices, first off,be coming to the states? Will they have all ofthese features intact? Will they be altered? And, of course, what will they cost?If they come as I saw them, are priced competitively, have carrier support, since most people here inthe U.S. don't see a phoneunless it's in a carrier storeand maybe Huawei does somekind of marketing push here.It could be a huge stepto finally have westernersstarting to pronouncetheir name correctly.(hip hop music)\n"
