The Nova 3: A Flagship Smartphone with a Twist
When it comes to smartphone design, Huawei has really impressed us this year. The Nova 3 is no exception. One thing that stands out about this phone is its color scheme. The glass back of the Nova 3 features a gradient finish that's similar to what we saw on their sister brand Honor's Honor 10 in London earlier this year. This same design element was also featured on the Twilight P20 Pro in Paris, and it's clear that Huawei has been working hard to create a consistent and recognizable design language across their lineup.
Upon closer inspection, you can see that the Nova 3 is not just a rehash of previous designs - there are subtle changes and refinements that set this phone apart from its predecessors. The most notable difference is in the corners of the phone, where the Nova 3 features curved edges that give it a more premium feel. This attention to detail is what sets the Nova 3 apart from other mid-range phones on the market.
Another unique feature of the Nova 3 is its dual selfie camera setup. While not as advanced as some of the higher-end flagships, this feature offers some impressive results, particularly when it comes to capturing portraits and low-light shots. The second camera is designed to help with background blur, resulting in more professional-looking selfies.
The placement of the fingerprint sensor on the Nova 3 is also noteworthy. While some users may prefer the traditional location on the front or back of the phone, we think that Huawei's decision to place it on the back is a nice touch. It adds an extra layer of security and convenience to the overall user experience.
Of course, design is just one part of the equation when it comes to smartphones. Performance is where things get really interesting. We were hoping that the Nova 3 would feature the high-end Kirin 970 processor that we saw on some of Huawei's higher-end models, including the P20 Pro. While that may not be the case here, the Nova 3 still packs a punch - thanks to its powerful KRT-910 processor, which is designed for AI and machine learning tasks.
This means that the Nova 3 can handle even the most demanding games and graphics-intensive tasks with ease. We're also expecting it to feature Huawei's power management features, including AI-based performance optimization and battery life improvements.
But what about the Honor 10, our close competitor in this mid-range segment? While it shares some similarities with the Nova 3 - such as its dual selfie camera setup and KRT-910 processor - there are a few key differences. For one, the Honor 10 boasts a slightly larger display, which may be important for users who want more screen real estate. Additionally, its fingerprint sensor is positioned in a more convenient location on the front of the phone.
However, it's worth noting that the Honor 10 is not widely available in stores - unlike the Nova 3, which can be found at most retailers. This could make the Nova 3 an attractive option for users who want to experience the flagship feel without breaking the bank.
So where does the Nova 3 fit into Huawei's smartphone lineup? At the top of the food chain are the Mate series phones, followed by the P20 Pro and P20, both of which feature more advanced cameras and processors. Then there's the Nova 3, which we like to think of as Huawei's affordable flagship or mid-range model.
Below that is the more budget-friendly Nova 3i, which offers a similar experience at a lower price point. And finally, there's Huawei's most basic smartphone model - one that's designed for users who want the basics without breaking the bank. It may not have all the bells and whistles of its more expensive counterparts, but it still delivers a solid user experience.
In our opinion, this phone is perfect for everyday users who don't want to spend over $1000 on a smartphone but still want the flagship feel and performance of a top-of-the-line device. With its powerful processor, advanced camera setup, and sleek design, we think that the Nova 3 has all the makings of a winner in this segment.

I'm Michael Josh and you're watching gadget match in this video we unbox the Huawei nova 3 and figure out where it belongs in the Huawei smartphone family ok let's go ahead and open up the box this is it's the Huawei nova 3 in iris purple let's set that aside inside the box are the usual suspects you have a sim ejector tool a clear jelly case charging brick and USBC cable and a pair of earbuds ok let's peel off this plastic so that we can see the phone in its full glory let's peel off the front cover as well you will find that all the text is written horizontally and that's because this is really intended to be a camera smartphone unlike the higher-end p20 and p20 pro there is no like a branding on the nova 3 one thing that Huawei has really done an impressive job this year is in terms of their smartphone design particularly the color of the glass back the Nova 3 has the same gradient finish that we first fell in love with when we were introduced to the Twilight p20 Pro in Paris earlier this year it's very similar also to the gradient finish that we saw on their sister brand honor with their honor 10 that we saw in London if you look closely you can see the evolution of Huawei's design while the p20 pro had a stainless steel like finish on its trim this one continues the color all around the smartphone you'll also find the same finish on the more affordable Nova 3i but if you look mostly the 3i has a flat back that's just flat while the corners of the Nova 3 are curved when you flip the phones around on the table you'll find that all of them have notches but what sets the Nova 3 apart is that it has two Suffolk Emma's that second camera is supposed to help with the background blur of your selfies and here are some samples so you can see the difference another difference is the positioning of the fingerprint sensor they're both on the back of the phone on the Nova 3 and the Nova 3i on the Huawei p20 Pro it's on the front of the device and on the honor 10 it's actually baked into the glass on the front of the phone if you're a fan of this kind of fingerprint sensor placement then this is definitely the phone to get out of the world of course looks and design is only one part of the story I guess one of the most important things about the Nova 3 is its performance if you watch our videos religiously you'll remember that when I reviewed the p20 light I said this would have loved to see the high-end keren 970 processor also on the p20 light so that we could benefit from some AI based features I know that's a different processor for a different price point but having said that Huawei sister brand honor put the 970 on the honor 10 very recently so you know it's possible my wish came true the Nova 3 while it is priced as a mid-range phone has the same powerful processor as a p20 pro that means it can run all your graphics intensive games it should have the same power management features and it is a chip designed for AI but while the Nova 3i is cheaper and comes with Huawei's new mid-range processor the Nova 3 packs a bigger punch and has a better price to performance ratio even without fully reviewing the phone we're pretty sure the Nova 3 will get a glowing recommendation especially over the Nova 3i but what about the honor 10 which on paper is very much a close match the only difference that we can see is its bigger display it's better fingerprint sensor position and its dual selfie cameras but the honor 10 is cheaper thing is in a lot of markets the honor 10 is an online exclusive if you want to go out to a store and buy it you won't be able to find the honor 10 in most countries and of course as we always say on gadget match experience always trump specs so we'll have to kind of put these phones through its paces in the real world to see if there is a significant difference that will justify one over the other so now where does the nova 3 fit in the Huawei smartphone family up at the top we always mate series which is going to be updated in a few months then of course you have the p20 Pro and the P 20 at this point I would just forget the P 20 light that's where the nova 3 comes in you could either call it their affordable flagship or their top-of-the-line mid-range model underneath that you have be more affordable Nova 3i and then under that you have their budget wise earnings at gadget
